Very interesting video this is what we do in England it all looks so familiar I have an identical 1931 Murray Town Sedan in the same condition needs all wood and all upholstery so really not economic to do it . Once I had priced it all up and not counting my labour it was a non starter . So I bought a 1929 Briggs leather back for $ 6850 about ten years ago I imported it from Chandler AZ an ex California car previous owner had it 34 years her name is Florence . Quite presentable original apart from the front seat upholstery and served as a wedding car for three family weddings and no breakdowns !!!

My concern is that a first time A owner might purchase something such as this. The expectation being that this will be a good project; I’ll simply reassemble the car and will over time have a decent, safe, and presentable Model A. This, of course, could come to fruition, however it will be the result of $$$$$ and more Dollars with an equally and quite possibly discouraging time investment. I and I suspect many, if not most, enjoy maintaining, working on, and improving our prized Model As. I must admit going to the shop and spending some time, if only minutes, with the Roadster is part of my daily morning ritual. However, any major project or potential project which might be taken on is accompanied with the thought, “What is a reasonable completion time frame?” I have a local acquaintance, well known in the Model A business world, who is often contacted by grieving families. The scenario depicted in this video is all too common. I have absolutely no doubts in Paul’s integrity, and equally have no fears that he will move the car and parts collection on to an enthusiastic, though very naive, first time Model A owner. Full disclosure and explanation before any sale. As evidenced by the regularly appearing questions, “Is this a fair price?”, “How much should I pay?” ; a comprehensive Model A condition and valuation workbook or checklist is badly needed. Paul does have an excellent video, but I can recognize that it is limited by the facts which he so often must repeat regarding liability etc. An example -- Model A brakes - the system in factory new condition with cast iron drums works very well - a worn out system does not. The seller states, the brakes are very good in fact new linings were installed last year. One test drives the car and finds the brakes only fair to maybe good. Our new prospective A owner recalls so many times hearing,”Model A brakes are very marginal.” and moves on. Eventually our new owner may drive an A with proper brakes or be frightened into taking action on the marginal brakes. He will likely discover the system is simply worn out. How much is this going to cost to rectify? I have a very good idea and if our new owner had this information at the time of the transaction it may have affected the deal in his favor. One often hears comments noting the wide variations in Model A asking prices. For good reason. If one desires a project car a mid priced example can be a good choice, whereas a beautiful , properly restored, fully sorted driver , the upper price ranges can be bargains. Paul’s concours winner would be an example. This has been somewhat long and rambling, but I hope it might help some folks out. And as always, the opinion of the author and always debatable.
@Modeltshinn2 жыл бұрын
That was quite lengthy, but I think I get what you’re thinking. When Bob and Paul bought this vehicle and parts they knew what they were getting into, the owners thought because everything was old that it was worth more and so they explained why it wasn’t and negotiations were made, they would never have sold for what they were asking, but that’s where experience and long time knowledge of Model A’s comes in handy. If a person is newer to the Model A world, hopefully they will realize that this type of project of putting a Model A back together, finding parts that are needed, etc will be a time taking project. What is a persons time worth? And hopefully the person rebuilding will take the time to go to swap meets and the like to find parts at a lesser cost to help save money in parts needed and some may have to come from parts stores and thankfully there’s a lot of them. If Paul and Bob decide to sell this vehicle and not restore it, they will go into lengthy details of what is needed if the person is not seasoned so they know what they are getting into, they are honest guys, in fact they would make their selves available to that person for answering questions and giving advice, especially Bob, he has the time and loves sharing his years of knowledge. Anyone buying a Ford Model A or any old car that is almost or is 100 years old should know that they are not going to drive like a modern vehicle. Brakes are reliable if done correctly and that why Paul tries hard to explain things in as much detail as possible, if done correctly Model A’s can stop just as good as a modern vehicle, he has video on that. So anyone reading our rambling….watch mine and Paul’s videos and we will share as much detailed information as we possibly can to help guide you to working on and building your Ford Model A the best way possible and the least expensive as possible. If you’re starting from scratch, yes it’s going to cost money, but more time than money, so ask yourself what is the value of your time and is the vehicle worth the cost? Have so money to the side for parts and things you’ll need along the way. Be all in till it’s finished. Have a friend or family member that’s interested and willing to help you achieve your goal and definitely join a club, they are nice people with lots of knowledge and usually willing to lend a hand, help you find parts, they give similars on how to’s and sometimes willing to use yours or other club members vehicle as examples so check that project of the list. It sounds like it’s time for me to make a video on this subject!
@myrlstone89042 жыл бұрын
@@Modeltshinn Yes, I’ll admit that I did get a bit carried away in that first post. I believe we’re on the same page and have the same goals in mind. You, Paul, and Bob have made huge strides in introducing the Model A to a public which probably was barely aware of it’s existence or relevance in today’s world. With this new found awareness, I see a continuous stream of comments stating, “I’d like to purchase my first Model A.” Paul reminds quite often that he can not offer an opinion if a particular car should be purchased or if a particular price is fair. I suspect that for each time Paul responds to this question there is a stack of mail asking the same. A check list detailing potential mechanical shortfalls which could be easily checked with instructions and potentially photos for doing so could be useful. Examples might be. 1. Engine warm and running - open radiator cap and observe for any air bubbles in the coolant flow. 2. Front axle - do the spring shackles appear to be resting on the axle. 3 Brake drums - steel drums have a rolled outer edge, cast drums do not. 4. Transmission shift tower - ……… Steve Mitchell offered an excellent tip for checking the tower condition. 5. Wheels - How does one determine if wheels are roadworthy? (This also applies if one is seeking wheels at a swap meet.) ETC. The potential parts cost for rectifying each shortfall could be given. This would not completely answer the “How much should I pay?” question but it could be an aid in making the decision. In closing, if not familiar please check out and subscribe to the KZbin channel listed in my following reply. This is the future of the Model A.

@@myrlstone8904 hi! Yes, I agree that’s some good points, I’ll have to look back at Paul’s video he did on The Buyers Guide to see if he mentioned those things. The main reason Paul can’t give a price is insurance purposes, he can’t give tell someone if the price is good or not especially if he didn’t go inspect it in person himself. Plus, different states and across seas prices are all over the place in value.
