Picking up my custom wheelchair

I’m so glad you love it!!! The first two weeks of having the chair was great, but unfortunately my body quickly deteriorated. I have a lot of damaged nerves in my lower back and lowering the back rest caused me 2-3months of severe leg spasms and pain. On the plus side, I have regained slightly more trunk control and I hate going back to my old chair. Thankfully, my body has now adjusted to it successfully and I would love to lower my backrest again, but I’m scared that I will cause more damaged and irritated nerves again. 💕

Nice WC 👍. Wanted to know what kind of cushion that is. Uses both foam and air bladders (ROHO is a brand where I am). Is it a hybrid custom product? Also, noticed you have very good core strength. For you, is there any preference or advantage to having a back support lower versus higher? Am an almost full time WC user myself. Not SCI but NM disorder and will be getting myself a new WC soon. My old one wasn't really fitted for me. Is why all of the questions. Have a blessed day...

Thanks! I have a Jay J3 which is single bladder Royo hybrid and my old one is a Jay J2 made of gel, hybrid too. I also got a Jay Fusion because it has much better pressure care, but when we got it it was so much taller than expected and also heavier with wrong measurements (weight and height) on the internet. Core strength is pretty good, but because of my patchy SCI I have more damage higher up with weekness to my arms, shoulders and lungs and I get twitches in my legs, arms, back and even neck. It is much better having the back rest shorter if it is possible because there is more room to move around and twist your torso without your arms hitting the backs rest when pushing car. ......And lifting it into a car is easier. I hope that helps. ☺️ Do you have any suggestions for other videos? I am hoping to do some more vlog styles ones, but when Covid restrictions ease. Blessings! 😆

@@freewheelingwithelise9421 Thanks for sharing your input, really appreciated. I'm trying to look at all options and preferably get feedback from others who use a WC. As far as other vlog ideas? Do you have any personal WC hacks you utilize? For example, I don't have a WC bag. Instead, I use on of those baby stroller organizers, the ones that go on the handles. I simply attached it under my seat using the front 2 (that attaches to the WC frame) to hold it in place. Another, I use water bottle holders, the ones used for biking, and applied them to my frame above the front casters. Are you able to show accessibility challenges where you live? Not necessarily your home (too many weirdos, safety reasons, etc) but out and about? Another for fun, do you have a top 10 list of 'what not to do' when you're in your WC? For me, never touch my handles and 'help' by pushing unless I specifically ask for it. Is probably my number 1 pet peeve, lol. Hope this helps in some way. Have a blessed day...

Can you tell me if the sides of the wheelchair are pushing you or just touching you? That is, do they leave a large gap, little or not at all? I ask this because I am making my order for my wheelchair and I would like to know how wide I can put it.

That's a great question! As wheelchair width is measured in inches and this determines your cushion size, I went for slightly larger than smaller. My width is 12inch. My hips are 11inch so there is a bit of room. If I had chosen an 11inch width, it would have been really difficult getting a cushion. Many cushions, particularly with air inserts only come in even number inches eg 12inch, 14 inch. So 11inch would have been really problematic. Also I am hoping to put on weight so need some room in case I do. Have a think about pressure sores (if the wheelchair width is tight) and then there will be no room to shove a jacket or coat down the gap and less room to move around a bit. Ideally 11 1/2 inch would have been best but I can't get that!

Hello! :) About A$10,000, but my new Melrose chair was $11,000 so it does vary. Depending on the material (titanium, aluminium etc.) it can be more, also the type like basketball chair, racing chair or electric.

Yes, he is a Quadriplegic and in a chair. I find it is better when they are because they REALLY know what people will need a chair due to their experience.

You don't want it too wide. Your arms will stretch and get tired. I have half an inch at each side and my hands rest at the center of the wheels comfortably!

I had a gap of one inch in my old WC, but this chair is 12inch in width and I fit very snugly. You want to have the chair tight and as small as possible because it is hard to lift it into the car yourself. Having a tight chair also means you can turn and swivel it by your hips rather than having to turn as much. Plus it is more comfortable because your shoulders can be easily pushing the chair in a more natural position, by you sides. I don't have any itching problems. Well said, Twitch Happens!!!
