Picking up my imported Daihatsu Hijet Kei Truck was a TOTAL DISASTER!

I've owned my 1995 Japanese imported mini truck for a short amount of time and I have learned quite a lot about why people are afraid of the import process. While I was able to import my Daihatsu Hijet S110P on my own, retrieving it from Ports America Chesapeake in Baltimore, Maryland was no easy feat. So here is what happened.

My 1996 4WD Hijet left Puerto Rico a couple of days ago and is halfway to Jacksonville Florida. It's a little over a week away from the port of entry, Newport News Virginia. The three month wait is almost over. I'm making lists and plans for the 18 hour round trip to get the little kei truck. I'm charging my jump box because I anticipated that problem but I'm concerned about the hundred problems I didn't anticipate. I've spent the last three months buying a small mountain of tools and accessories and supplies for the little truck. Thanks for your video. I hope my port experience is trouble free. I got the 5 speed manual Hijet with the Hi/Lo transfer case, but no A/C. I wish I had EFI but pretty sure mine has a carburetor. That initial battery installation was sketch AF. I was cringing at the minimal contact points for a high current connection. That REEEEE sound you heard was probably the bendix partially engaging the starter and chewing away at the edge of the flywheel. The Rube Goldberg double adapter fix for the lawnmower battery is a little better but far from optimal. Please relocate the double stack adapter post toward the inside of the battery. It's awfully close to the steel battery box and that would cause a China syndrome meltdown. The positive terminal should be covered with a red insulator boot but that's difficult when you stack two terminal adapters. Every connection has a small voltage drop and is a place for corrosion to occur. No doubt the CRC battery spray is good stuff. CRC doesn't make bad products. I've been using Surface Shield for a battery terminal anti-corrosive coating and it's the best I've ever used. I already have it because they salt the roads here in the winter and spraying a lanolin based anti-corrosive coating on the frame (inside box frames, too) is the only way to keep them from rusting in half. This is a particular problem for kei trucks. The Japanese don't salt their roads and that's why we can import solid little 25+ year old kei trucks. Untreated, the frames quickly rust in the northern US.

Yep. At the gas station I was pressed. The people around that area of Dundalk, MD kept bothering me off camera. I had to thank of something quick to get in and get out. Lol. The terminal connects are solid for now and do not move. When this current battery dies I will opt for a normal U.S. style and will reduce the adapter set and will move the terminals inward as you mentioned. For now all is well, even in the cold. Thanks.

@@JCMFix - Even though it doesn't take much current to start a little low compression 660 cc three cylinder engine, essentially a low compression motorcycle engine, I'm thinking of expanding the battery box and installing a larger deep cycle marine battery in my Hijet, not for more amps for starting but to use as a storage battery that will be able to source current for a 2000 watt inverter that I can use to power a 1200W 120VAC Poulan chainsaw that I have. Add a 100 foot extension cord and the little Hijet would make a great vehicle to collect firewood in the woods. It'd also be great to be able to run one of the small contractor's table saws in the pickup bed or a circular saw or a larger hammer drill. Set the engine to a high idle to keep the battery charged and the inverter could supply 15A at 120VAC for a number of purposes.

Hey there, your “+” terminal is WAY to close to the metal box. A slight shift and ZAP !! Please just rotate it 180* have it pointing towards the Neg terminal. Also, is the correct battery not available?

Cheers. It's been adjusted to not move. No the correct battery is not available in the USA. Which is why i had to resort to a lawn mower battery (which is actually more powerful than the original.)

Everything along with the forms you need are in this website: www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/importing-car You will have to pay for an escort at the Dundalk Marine Terminal and they charge by the hour. Get in touch with the company that's holding the sea port parking space for you and let them know you are coming after getting your CBP forms stamped. I went to BWI to pay the truck duty fees and got all the forms stamped from their Duty collection desk. Its in the same hallway as their Global Entry interview room.

​@@Insanity1k No forms to fill online. (Take a look at the link i sent above). On the last couple of paragraphs at the bottom of the webpage it shows all the forms you can fill out and then print before you show up to pay your 25% duty fees with Customs and Border Protection. I don't know if you can do everything onsite. I brought my forms to the BWI airport and paid my duty there. CBP is located at the Dundalk Terminal (as they do the agricultural and customs inspections there). They have their own Shed. I don't know if one is allowed to stamp their importation forms and pay duty there. Call CBP at the Baltimore Seaport (410-288-3183) to see if you can do everything onsite.
