Nice work with the Pulse dissection, Dustin! I may have to cut mine open now. I’ve been so reluctant to dissect my V because I love it so much. But the carbon fiber tube situation has me intrigued

You may need to? Why didn't you do that immediately when you saw the performance and sound change? You didn't get curious until you saw someone who is? Instead, you told your followers that your Pulse got better and stayed that way, so maybe yours will too. Here is my affiliate link. Maybe if we saw the actual defect then some of us wouldn't click. Hmm. I wonder if that could be the reason why you aren't so curious. So sad.

Thanks, John! I can very much relate to that feeling... after I cut open the Pulse E, I knew I would have to cut open the V or else I wouldn't get the answers I wanted. Now i've got to break in a new V to get it back to how my old one was! I spoke to Ivan afterwards, as well, and the broken-in paddle he dissected showed similar results. He is now thinking of extending the wrap overlay on the tubules, but he also knows that seems to be against popular demand, haha

To be fair to John, and any other reviewer, for that matter... I didn't want to cut mine open, either! It's certainly not an easy thing to permanently ruin a paddle you won't be able to use ever again, even as a reviewer. It broke my heart for this paddle, actually! I also probably got a little lucky and I almost missed the finding altogether, too. So, while I cut some paddles open, I won't do it for all, and I know that I may not find anything visually obvious when I do so, either.
@johnkewpickleball

@@WilliamSartori-oz5tp As the first person to report on the break-in of the Pulse, my first priority was to continue playing with it to make sure it didn't behave the same way as other Gen-3's such as the MOD TA-15, and eventually become unplayable. If I dissected it, that would be impossible. Mine has stabilized and does not behave like other broken Gen-3s. It plays great, as everyone else is reporting, including Dustin. So now the next priority is dissection to see if Dustin's finding is repeatable

Entry for community portion, “The People’s Champ”. Each pod, near the end of the community segment, have each community member give their favorite overall paddle of the bunch - you would then have a favorite paddle for each community reviewer and potentially a “true champ”if majority of community reviewers select the same paddle. Some weeks you may not have a “true champ” if reviewers selected diff favorite paddles. This could be a neat way to boil down the community testers impressions and could also add an element of excitement to the segment, as in, “will we have a true champ this week?”Love what you guys are doing - keep up the great work and Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Apes has said that they found additional micro holes in the broken in foam. Essentially, the new paddle was a solid foam and the broken in one had a softer foam with more holes in it. PERSONALLY, I like your theory better, that maybe the foam and the carbon fiber tubes separated, and increase the trampoline effect. I think then the Carbon fiber tubes prevent it from breaking further. GOOD STUFF IN THIS POD.
@PickleballMedicine
@PickleballMedicine Ай бұрын
Thanks again, Matt!! I talked to Ivan on the phone the other day and proposed the idea of manufacturing them with the tubes already open a bit.. that way the breakin is reduced and it starts more "broken in" so to speak.. but not sure he's wanting to go for that! 😅

Thank you for showing us this defect. PB Apes released a paddle that breaks in the field and you showed us how that breakage occurs. Without exception, everybody who has reviewed this thing observed that it changes but you are the only one who showed us the cause. It may feel better after breakage but that isn't the intention of the design. It's just an unfortunate (or fortunate) symptom of the failure. It is dissapointing that reviewers are reluctant to dissect paddles and you said that it was hard to permanently ruin a paddle. This is invaluable for us who don't want to spend money on a broken paddle. You are a reviewer who receives money through affiliate links which makes you a professional reviewer. Think of it as a test sample, not your personal paddle. You are protecting us from brands that release paddles that have questionable designs and inadequate reliability tests. You are the Consumer Reports for paddles. Your findings may have even encouraged PB Apes to make a change.
@PickleballMedicine
@PickleballMedicine Ай бұрын
You have a very valid point, for sure. I think one other angle that makes it difficult for me personally to cut open every paddle I receive is that once you do that, the ability to use a paddle for comparative purposes in the future is gone. Statistics, measurements, etc are all only good if taken into real context, and things such as anchoring and recency bias make comparing a paddle from a long time ago, to a paddle i'm testing now, very difficult and frankly innacurate unless I can hit them side by side. For example, the Neonic Force was a paddle that had really strong pop when it was released, and if I was just going off memory, I would have said it could compete with some of our more poppy paddles now. I was surprised to take it out and hit it side by side some of the newer paddles, because while the pop is still good, it's absolutely nowhere near the pop of a chorus fire or a Valor Pro, even though my memory might have thought so. Destroying paddles takes that away, and also makes it so I cant tease out the nuanced differences in paddles, such as the old vs new shapeshifters. those really need to be hit side by side, so consumers can know what actaul differences they will see, in real time and in real life. Destroying paddles takes that away in the future. So while I definitely see your point, and i'll continue to cut open many, many paddles, just know there is a lot that goes into the decision of cutting open a paddle, from a reviewers perspective, beyond personal connection. (:

Pulse s vs mod; thoughts on how they play differently and what you would get for tournaments?
@PickleballMedicine
@PickleballMedicine Ай бұрын
Oh man, great question. These are very different in feel and how they play! The Mod is way hotter, and a bit more inconstant. the Pulse series is much more controllable, consistent, and better durability. I would choose the Pulse all day long, because for me personally, I usually need all the help i can get in control, and do just fine with power on my own. consistency wins tournaments, imo!

you're not wrong... I think some of the nuances of this will be worked out soon, or at least I hope so. Some gen3 paddles seem to last much longer than others, but certainly foam seems highly degradable compared to the more traditionally rigid cores.
