Serve at 4:10 looked to me like it hit in front of or on the kitchen line. Guy in black might have been a little better than 3.00. One thing I have learned since my days at this level is that when chasing a ball down or making a dig off a smash the goal can't be just to get it over the net. A great dig is one that resets a point rather than just putting it where the opponent can put it away.. When sprinting toward the net to return a dink, the goal used to be to just reach the ball and get it over then net. Now it is to get to the ball while also trying to figure out how to put it in a spot where they won't just kill it on their next shot.

Good point. There's a difference in just getting it over the net and getting it to where your opponent cannot attack it. Thanks for watching.

A great dig is one that resets a point rather than just putting it where the opponent can put it away." encapsulates one of the major skills that is incredibly difficult yet needs to be developed to move from being one of those players that better ones really don't want to play with if they're playing "competitive recreational" to one that is basically comfortable playing with other similar, and more importantly better, players. Of all the weaknesses I have in my 3.0 (on a bad day) to 3.5 (on a good day) playing is me lacking that skill. There are others I'm not consistent in, but boy, resetting a smash is so dang hard. It's also hard to drill smash resets as well! What's the best way?

Sounded like you were being “critical” of recreational pickleball. We all started somewhere, so best to suspend the judgement and just focus on what they can do to get better. My main observation from watching is that all of them were standing flat footed (even the guy with all the spin shots) on their shots and as they moved about the court. Gotta bend those knees. It’s hard to get any control or consistency when you’re using all arm…and it showed. Footwork, footwork, footwork.

Rory, How often to you drill as opposed to play rec games to improve your skills? Just curious

Thanks for asking. I have a spin shot pickleball ball machine. Usually, when I play, I arrive about an hour and a half before first serve. That allows me to hit a couple of hundred shots off of my pickleball machine before the game starts. So, an hour and a half of drilling and about 2 and 1/2 hours of play.
