Yeah, I am one of those who are unfamiliar with Sturges. I will definitely watch Sullivan's Travels now. Thanks for making this video and letting me learn about him and this movie.

Great review! Thanks. My first Sturges film.

My favorite Sturges' movie is "Miracle Of Morgan's Creek". To this day, people can't believe Sturges got the film past the Hays Commission - a "party" girl gets pregnant, can't remember who, out of the many men she partied with, is the father; and the hero who attempts statutory rape. abduction (taking a minor across state lines), impersonating an officer during the time of war (treason), assault with a deadly weapon, breaking out of jail, grand theft, and is turned into a hero! All with a smattering of characters from "The Great McGinty".

I know! That movie is already very funny but knowing how blatantly Sturges is breaking all the Hays Code rules under their very noses is even more hilarious. I haven’t looked much into how they got away with it but I can only guess that since the tone of the film feels so light and innocent none of the reviewers picked up on how crazy the film actually was.

Love the videos man. Might you recommend a good place to find/watch some of these movies? Your presentations make them sound so appealing I must ask.

Thanks! As far as finding and watching these films goes, right now, I think renting or buying digitally from places like Amazon or Vudu will probably be your best bet. KZbin can actually be a great place too. Last I checked, I think you might be able to find The Palm Beach Story for free in on KZbin in pretty good quality. For a while, the Criterion Channel streaming service actually had eight of his films on their site, so I would also keep an eye out there if they bring any of them back. Otherwise, if you are interested in collecting the physical movies, I think they are all available in some shape or form on DVD and Blu-ray, so I would check places like Amazon or eBay to get them that way. The TCM Shop is also another great place which has a very good variety of classic films. I know several of Sturges' more popular films have gotten very nice remasters lately from companies like Kino Lorber and Criterion, so you can find some great versions out there! Keep in mind that also means they will most likely cost more, so be aware of that. In short, if you just want to see some of these films, I would just rent them from Vudu or Amazon Prime but if you want to actually own some of them, then I would definitely look into getting them on a disk as the buy digitally option on Prime and Vudu costs in some cases just as much as buying the disks. Hope this helps!

Im still puzzled by the hanging legs by the waterfront... "spooky". Has it ever been explained?
@JoshuaSutlive

I don’t think it has been explained. I looked into it when I made the video and I don’t remember finding anything. I can only assume it was probably just some crew members having fun seeing what they could get away with in the background. It’s definitely an odd detail and since so much time has passed since the film was made, I doubt we’ll ever get an answer but it’s become one of my favorite easy to miss details that becomes impossible to unsee once you spot it!

@@JoshuaSutlive ...considering the restrictions on content in the movies, it has to be Sturgis doing it. Sneaking it by the system until it was too late. No comments because if he has acknowledged the prank, then the censors would have been harsh....no bad press at the time because a war was going on.....press didn't care, and so it passed into the fog of history until video came along and now its a wonderful nugget in the movie stream of time.

I love this movie and often wonder what Howard Hawks could have done with it. Hawks was so sly that his attack on Hollywood (and middle American values) would have probably gone under the radar...until the French got hold of it in Cahiers du Cinema. Like they did with his other films.

Interesting, I haven’t thought of that! Based on interviews I’ve heard with Howard Hawks, though he made several classics, he always seemed to be really unpretentious about his work and never saw his films as being high art or anything so I think the story of a filmmaker discovering the value in just making good comedies after trying to write the next grapes of wrath fits very well with how he probably saw things!

Very much. And His Girl Friday can stand with Citizen Kane or Deliverance or Bonnie and Clyde as a defining American movie. And only half of it comes from the play. More than ANYONE he is OUR best auteur...and bravest. How many Grapes did Ford make under McCarthy? While everyone else played it safe Hawks's 1950 trilogy (War Bride, Thing, Monkey Business) were the smuttiest movies to date while they attacked the Army, the Bomb, scientists, marriage, straight sex (as opposed to anal sex), WW2 (got in the way of our sex lives), all in a "what? Get your mind out of the gutter" way that made censors look foolish for even mentioning it. The Thing attacked EVERYTHING: the monster is asexual? It's gotta GO.
