HazMatIQ Trainers Todd Smith and Chris Waier break down Picric Acid and reminiscence about non-grey hair and not needing glasses. The guys know this isn't a chemical you run very often, but demonstrate how the HMIQ system can identify and properly respond with a ten second size-up.
Follow along as we run the HazMatIQ system to find out how to assess the threat, determine the chemical, and respond properly.

The main things they didn't cover is what it's really made of. 3 ingredients for picric acid: Acetylsalicylic acid from asprin (or phenol), Nitric acid, and Sulfuric acid. What does this tell us right off the bat? Corrosive & possible nitrogen dioxide. Also tells us sodium hydroxide, or sodium bicarbonate will neutralize the corrosivness of these acids. There's no mercury & it's not radioactive, if it's dry there's no gas. Wet it down, wear gloves, and it's pretty safe to handle. It's not as volatile as people think but if it's converted with a salt nitrate making potassium/or lead picrite then its extremely sensitive to shock and heat.

I'm here from a game called Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnaughts. Apparently it was historically used in naval shells, so I imagine that sensitivity to shock and heat made it an accident waiting to happen. Then again that can be said of any ammo magazine at any time in history, since that's kindof the point. Though in game your chance of flash fires when you get hit go through the roof, which I would guess is probably a pretty accurate representation.

Why don't they have "Industrial Chemists" in their team to do this? These guys are shooting in the dark.
