That flower pattern is so adorable! I like the raw edge applique technique but I'm a complete beginner and hoping I can do it. I certainly am going to give it a try! Thank you very much for your tutorial!

Thank you for a great easy to follow video. I had seen many videos about appliques and wanted to see one where the edge was finished with a regular sewing machine using the zig-zag stitch.

Wow paper??? I never would have thought that would work, what a great idea. At the end of this video I realised that my mom-in-law actually bought me this book. Love the flowers, so sweet and cute.

An open toe applique foot would make it easier for all to see and aid in stitch placement as well. I like using paper behind as well.

The paper helps stabilize the fabric and prevent puckering. I will often use the tissue paper used when wrapping gifts. I save the stuff I get with a gift for things like this. If your needle is constantly breaking, check your tension setting. Another thing that can cause the needle to break is using the wrong size needle.

@liesbeth2009 Just make sure your raw edge is in the middle of your sewing foot :) Then the needle will go half in the flower, and half outside of it :)

Im curious... do you use paper scissors to cut out your applique (fabric with freezer paper bonded to it) or fabric scissors?
@Danielle33384
@Danielle33384 8 жыл бұрын
This may be a stupid question but when you sew around any applique do you have the top and bottom thread set up just like you do when you piece your quilt? like with top and bottom thread?

@freeangie11 If you want to add this to a shirt I think it's easiest to just add the flower directly to the shirt.. aka you use your shirt instead of the 'background' fabric :)

@montayostudio What I would do is wait a few minutes after ironing the fabric so it cools the glue. Then normally the glue just stays in place. Also the paper helps 'clean' the needle with every stitch :)

Never tried it with embroidery before. I know you can buy a stabalizer that is more like fabric that may work....I have done tons of handwork, but never used a stabalizer.

Thank you for sharing this tutorial. It's definitely simpler than the steps printed in books. You did mentioned "plastic templates". Not so sure if it's available in Singapore. I'll substitute it with the iron on lining for collars. The result might not be as good as yours.

Template plastic is expensive in many parts of the world mainly because it's imported. You can easily replace it for playable plastic cutting boards that we use in the kitchen. They are much easier to cut as well.
