PIE, POTATO AND PEAS for under a POUND! Reviewing ICELAND Chicken and Bacon Pie

In today's video it's another of my budget meals where I make a plate of food for less than a pound !
It's Iceland Chicken and Bacon Pie, with cheese and spring onion filled jacket potato and garden peas.
All made in about 20 minutes, and under a quid for a delicious and CHEAP meal!

I found a method ages ago for the 'perfect jacket potato'. 5 minutes on each side in the microwave 5 minutes in the airfryer Butter, salt and pepper to taste.

Sounds about right to me. Although I might do a little longer in the air fryer, I really like to crisp up that skin 😀

Just had cheese and onion pie with baked beans and homemade chips. I bought the pie from a couple who do catering for events. Sometimes they are single and other times you get a portion from a huge one. I prefer the portion. Both £2.30 and seriously it must cost at least £1.50 for the cheese alone. Beans 22p from Lidl, three portions remain and one big potato about 12p cut into chips and deep fried. Your meal looks great. I like baked potatoes done like that. 👍

Oh I love a cheese and onion pie, but as you say to make it properly tasty takes a LOT of cheese :-) But pie, chips and beans sounds like a great, simple dinner. As for the jackets, I remember having them like that as a kid, but not recently, it was delicious. Got me thinking about other things I could use in the filling...

@@GreenoEats Do you remember the canned toppings you could buy which were like a thick sauce and had tiny amounts of ham in the cheesy glug? You toasted one side of a slice of bread then put the contents of the can, they were tiny, on the non toasted side, then put that under the grill until it browned on top. It was great when you had no money . Very tasty. I also find a full English a cheap midday meal. I cook all the bacon from a pack of from the butcher, sausages cooked, black pudding separated but not cooked as that cooks quickly, frozen hash browns, potato cakes, then portion the whole breakfast and put in the freezer. Add canned tomatoes, cheaper, baked beans, scrambled egg or whatever. It works out at about £1.30 per serving. The eggs are the most expensive. Try the Lidl free range white eggs. 99p for 6 and two of the last pack had double yolks!!!

@@denisemotley6639 can’t beat a double yolker! What a treat 😀 I do remember those Toast Toppers, my Mum used to have them as a brunch when she was on a diet! I imagine they were pretty grim weren’t they?

I've started using the microwave less for my baked potatoes - maybe just a couple of minutes to get them started. I find that if you do the large majority of cooking in the oven the potato gets so much more fluffy and 'potatoey' tasting. Takes a bit longer though.

Yeah you can't beat them done properly, all lovely and fluffy inside and a crispy skin. Perhaps I should have made clear that I'm my budget meal videos I am also trying to make it as energy efficient as possible too, can't be turning the oven on for an hour to cook a spud 🤣

Not heard of Canford Nest cafe before, it that something new out there? I did a video on Panku in January but from the Weymouth branch of Asda, did you see that one?

No not seen the Panku Weymouth Asda one, although we do go there we're in Poole anyway. Canford Nest is a new one next to the Haymoor pub.

@@bobs4738 I would imagine that one Panku is very much like another (apparently they are owned by the same group as Yo Sushi, but having the separate brands mean they can put 1 in Asda and 1 in Tesco!). I will try the Poole Asda one at some point (although I tend to get easily distracted by the Lakeside chippy if I am ever in that part of Poole!)

Hey greeno , we are coming down to weymouth for a week soon , I'd love your advice on where to go for a great carvery and chinese , I'll deffo try the "hidden gem " kebab place you tried last year , I'll look forward to hearing your recommendations , thankyou , take care x

For me the best carvery around is just outside Dorchester, the Sun Inn. I have heard very good things about The Turk's Head in Chickerell too but yet to visit myself. Both definitely worth booking in advance. For Chinese, again I am gonna recommend a place in Dorchester called Lee Garden, for either restaurant or takeaway. It's 20 mins drive from where I live, but we almost always make that drive if we're having a Chinese. Can't think of a Chinese I would highly recommend in Weymouth itself. 2 other places I would recommend though are Rona's Bar and Grill (Turkish/Meditteranean) and also Sambo Rodizio (all you can eat Brazilian steakhouse). I hope you enjoy your time down here in Dorset!
