2:13 that's me all in black the first rower with glasses. I was rowing for the Invercargill Rowing Club in the Intermediate Coxed 4. I was bow seat. 1983 New Zealand Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro. I was 19 and bullet-proof :-) Excellent 1st Nationals for me. On the second day of finals after being eliminated we (about 12 male rowers) filled an empty 44 gallon drum with empty Leopard lager tinnies (sculled of course) in 2 1/2/hours. We won our gold medal in style :-) IRC ruled that day!

Andréanne Morin describes the gear briefly in the blog post "From the Gjessing-Nilson to Concept2 and Beyond" at the blog on the concept2 website. The NZ machine wasn't an erg; only flywheel distance was measured. I remember a business trip to Owen Sound, Ontario in the mid-1980s; they had a C2 Model A at the motel. The Mod A had a 27" bicycle wheel with an analog bike speedometer/odometer. I've never seen anything w a wooden rod like the NZ machine.

(continued) The standard max-out test was 6', values were approx.: min 4500 turns for U23 Italian team consideration; best LMA in Italy back then: 4700; 5000 for SA elite level. Karppinen did 5400. You can find pictures of Olaf Tufte on the GN erg on his site; I emailed him to ask, and he said he used to do 5400 as well, so this is "monster-level" and shall translate to about 5'40''/2000m on the C2 erg. Still in my nightmares anyway. Best, G. (4711) :^)

37 years later and the ERG test is much the same... although the machine of pain has evolved slightly....but not in comfort....

Hard, they worked hard... ;^) The Gjessing-Nielsen erg was a terrible machine. Impossible to do "long" training on it, because at low pace it became impossibly hard. From 1986 or 87 on, Gjessing ergs used to have a display not unlike modern ones, with s/m, watts and of course flywheel turns, which remained the benchmark (no distance in metres).

Anyone got any info/pics of ergs like this? Would love to know how they worked in those days. Could they actually calculate a distance or wattage?

I remember watching this at high school (Westlake Boys) when I tried (albeit hilariously) as a slightly fat short non ginger 14 year old to get into the school junior rowing team . Since 1972 when NZ Rowing introduced their rowing apartheid policy with their 'Gingers only' policy we havent won a gold medal in the rowing eight at the Olympics.Im suprised John Minto and his gang haven't rightfully got stuck into NZ Rowing for this atrocious policy of making people 'honorary gingers' just so they can row and come fourth place at the Olympics . The world rowing champs well thats another story , Lets be honest people notice the Olympics more. If we opened this sport up to non gingers well who knows how good things will go . I think we should include some brothers and sisters from the South and West side as well for some instant 'street cred' .A few garage parties out south and west with big bottles of Lion Red , a good old singalong and a mean feed from the 'Auntie' will be great for team bonding indeed .The Polynesian people came to NZ in waka and canoes so historically with their natural strength they are more than well suited to this sport than white kids who forefathers came to NZ on Boeing 747's or on Captain Cooks Endeavour . But lets be honest though its bloody funny exposing Gingers to the harsh sun and seeing them impersonate lobsters at the end of a harsh sunny day in good old NZ isnt it now .

Rob I really appreciate your anti-gingeric views, I see you commented 8 months ago and just came back in for some more, you bring light to my day and I appreciate that because I am not a ginger. However I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there were a few gingers/day-walkers in the NZ Mens 8+ that won gold at the olympics last year. I think its a good thing we let the gingers just do their thing rowing their lives away - it really reduces our contact with them on land. Lets just give them this one thing. On the polynesian comments, lets not be racist, let us all come together united as one in our disgust of gingers.

@@Outolunches yep nothing like leaving a ginger out in the middle of a lake without suncream that has a SPF factor over at least 400 whilst the NZ sun bounces off the water and bakes them from above as well. In my defence I dont think my comments about 'brothers and sisters' becoming rowers could be classed as racist though . I want to see rowing and cycling as well with more brothers and sisters involved. I look back and reflect on my failed attempt at trying to become a rower as quite a hilarious and defining moment in my life. my late Mum reckoned I would have bought such a level of hilarity to the sport it would have assured my immortality as a 'rower' and probably cost my old alma mater Westlake Boys lots of money in the process , Lol:) . Consider me now subscribed to your channel indeed !!
