I’m glad someone covered the ghostbusters animated film, feels like it doesn’t get discussed much. I remember it was suppose to release before afterlife (2021) but nothing and there was a plot that said this movie centered around a ghost’s point of view. The current animated movie coming could be the same project but I don’t know.

all these cancelled movies and production materials remind me of when a movie adaptation of Fruit Ninja was announced back in 2016, and though it wasn't produced by Sony, it's really interesting considering there is next to nothing about it online. no actors were cast, no major plot synopsis was released, not even a release date was planned. it was just kind of announced once and then never talked about again, not even by Halfbrick (the people who made the original Fruit Ninja game). no one knows if it's cancelled or not and it's really odd

pity that the third smurfs movie never went forward since i was curious of the direction they were going for. In other words, say what you will about the specific hybrid family films, but you can give credit to the cast and crew by blending nice visual effects in terms of character animation interacting with the live characters that could have counted for best visual effects categories on certain awards with sense of faithfulness to their source materials in fairest intention possible, not to mention that the character designs are nicely done and detailed to fit in the real world despite being uncanny for some tastes, even superior to look at compared to CATS, makes sense?

The Ghostbusters Animated film is still happening, as stated at Ghostbusters Con last year. With IMDB stating it will be released in 2025, well then again anyone can edit IMDB so I'm not to sure about that. We do know that the film would apparently be told from the perspective of the Ghosts, but we don't know whether it would've been a new story or the original film told from their perspective.

You know, if I were in charge of Sony Pictures Animation, rather than greenlighting "The Emoji Movie", I'd probably instead sell it off to the Weinstein Company, and probably get Lauren Faust to co-direct with Genndy Tartakovsky on the Popeye movie. Two former Cartoon Network-legends, the creators of Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Friendship is Magic, working on a feature film starring a character just one year younger than Mickey Mouse (he was first put on print in 1929, a year after Mickey's debut in "Steamboat Willie"), and a well-known icon of animation's Golden Age, thanks to the legendary Fleischer brothers, who first brought the character to the big screen in 1933 (these shorts during the Golden Age of Animation were indeed released in movie theaters. During that time, movie theaters were obligated to buy packages which included, along with a feature film, short subjects, which could also be live-action, like "The Three Stooges", or "The Little Rascals", that appeared before the movie would start).

I really would love to see a proper old fashion Popeye and honestly the clip you showed looked pretty good looks wise. If people want to continue to ruin Ghostbusters, that's fine because the only thing i loved was The Real Ghostbusters and nothing can touch that. Popeye is not "new"...The character has been around since 1929. The Emojis as a product are WAY more recent, and (like them or not) have become a worldwide innovation and sensation in the world of communication between people. That being said, the Popeye movie would've been my preferred project to get released, and not the Emoji movie. So while Popeye is nowhere near "new", his animated movie would've been great.

Either way, Sony wanted to bank on the popularity of the Emoji, as it was a proven cultural phenomenon and easily marketable to younger audiences and the general moviegoing public. “Popeye” has always been around, but modern audiences (especially young audiences, which generally are the big moneymakers in today’s cinema going public) aren’t as familiar with the brand given how the last time (to my knowledge) the character got a big-screen cinematic take was the 1980 musical-style misfire starring the late Robin Williams as the titular character and Shelley Duval as his love interest Olive Oyl. I think it comes down to which property is currently more recognizable (and much more importantly, marketable) in the cultural zeitgeist of the time…And unfortunately the Emoji brand was admittedly a safer bet in that context, though given the lackluster storytelling scope of said brand, I don’t think there was any chance at some type of attempt at anything resembling the ideas of “cohesive narrative” and/or “plot”…You’d need some REALLY creative and out-of-the-box (and just plain clever) writing teams to have any chance at making the Emoji brand work in the cinematic sense. Sony Pictures Animation (circa 2017, at least) did not have this advantage (or if they did, those people were certainly not attached to this production), and the end result was (and in my opinion will remain) nothing remarkable, a forgettable, skippable footnote their animated catalog…Clearly made to bank on the cultural impact of the Emoji in everyday communication.

Fun fact: there’s also a lost Sony animation project that never went into development which was the super Mario bros movie that was announced back in 2014 when the Sony hack was going haywire but Sony had no plans to make a Sony Mario movie due to Nintendo and Sony Interactive Entertainment being competitors so the Mario movie rights were instead thrown to Universal Pictures and Illumination instead of Sony

You ever think you're gonna cover the bad CG hybrid movies WB threatened to make when Yogi Bear was somehow considered successful (Hong Kong Phooey, Marvi the Martian, Bugs Bunny , and Yogi 2)? Unless you did already, that is. Anyway, the ONLY thing of value lost when the Smurfs 3 was canned was the voice cast. I feel there was a LOT of wasted opportunity with the cast, when some of the characters only had a line or two. Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Reubens as Jokey, for example. Only had like one line, and even when they had the 2 animated spinoff shorts, he was voiced by a sound-a-like. While I did think most of the cast of the Lost Village movie was superior (Jack McBrayer was closer to cartoon Clumsy than Anton was), I really missed Hank Azaria's "only reason to watch the movies" Gargamel. Plus, I HATE how great the two 2-D animated spinoff movies were. I WISH we got that version of the characters with that animation, and watching them always makes me just so annoyed that we could have had something great.
