I love the episode because of how much a person can relate to the plot. I personally know what it's like to lose a beloved pet and the sadness it can cause. It's a nice change of pace from Spongebob's usual antics that can't be replicated in real life. Yes I can see why it kind of fails as a drama, but it gives Spongebob more character and gives more variety to the series.

I actually love "Have you seen this snail?" a.k.a "Where's Gary?", because this special does have a few decent jokes, and the story is well written. As what one of the reviewers in the video states that "SB is pretty annoying at times, but you can still relate and feel empathy for the character in episodes like this", It made me feel very emotional towards SB and makes you feel so sorry for him that he losts his pet. The song is also good and Well-written, unlike most of the other bad songs on the show like in "To love a Patty" for example. The song has a R&B feel to it, and it is quite catchy and emotional. The Jokes like Patrick's one-liners, and Squidward screaming theee times in the bathtub was hilarious. So yeah, this episode has a good storyline, and good humour too. It is a HUGE improvement over "Dumped."

I'd like to share my own feelings about this. First, I can't agree about Gary's Song. It may be a bit schmaltzy, but I think it's sweet and touching and while yes, it may have been clear that SpongeBob will get Gary back, kids watching it for the first time (like myself) don't know better. Also, Patrick not remembering Gary didn't bug me because by that point the audience knows Gary has escaped so it's clear that Gary is safe and returning home. I understand why you think that way, but my feelings on SpongeBob in general are different than others. I don't do pre-movie and post-movie divide up and I feel that if I enjoy a certain episode and want to see it again, it's good. I personally don't divide the show season by season but rather as a whole. Simpsons is the same way for me. Family Guy, not so much, partially because I don't watch it. That to me is a more healthy way to look at a TV show, even one with no continuity. I just pick and choose what I like rather than change my views because it's popular to do so.

My cat died recently and when I was holding his body in my lap, the song from this episode actually ran through my head. Especially the line, "Your meow right now would sound like music to me." :( I don't know if you have any pets or not, but this episode really captures how much we love our pets. Of course it's going to feature SpongeBob being sad a lot - it shows how much he really, really loves Gary - which is probably why this episode came to mind (and was even a little bit comforting) when my cat died.

This episode is good, but it's not fantastic as it is. There are ways to make this better. - Increase Gary screentime with a crazy grandma and perhaps give him first sense of suspicion, but still rejects Spongebob (which is the core of a drama). Gary part is better in this episode overall. - This also means reduce Spongebob screentime and make Spongebob's progression of finding the pet bumpier and exciting, but also give Patrick stupid yet brilliant moments so they can get to Gary closer. - Add more comedy. Yes, Melodrama and comedy can go hand to hand if done well. They can also play comedy as long as it progresses the plot forward (and it's even better when it's Patrick doing it with stupid yet works at finding Gary) - Perhaps Spongebob meets Gary while being chased by crazy grandma showing his scared and innocent expression when seeing Spongebob on sight make it cuter, engaging, and heartwarming.

Great review, Pieguy! One thing I like about this episode is after seeing episodes like "A pal for Gary" and "Pet sitter pat" it's nice to see SpongeBob see the error of his ways and try to get Gary to come home. This episode shows that SpongeBob legitimately cares for Gary and wants to be a good pet owner. Also, the part where Gary finds all the old snail shells really freaked me out as a kid. I like how this episode has a pretty sad tone overall and then they throw in this random scary moment to top it all off.

From an industry perspective, I'd like to point something out that not a lot of people have gotten at when it comes to this distinction between "pre-movie" and "post-movie", and that is the process by which the episodes are written. Writing for animated comedy shows is usually divided into two categories: premise-based and script-based. Premise-based shows call upon professional writers to come up with story outlines (usually three paragraphs), and storyboard artists will expand upon the story. These tend to result in more visual humor, due to artists having a stronger role in fleshing out the story. Script-based shows are written primarily by professional writers, and storyboard artists will create visuals for a story set in place. These shows tend to have auditory humor. Shows like Star vs. TFOE, Sanjay and Craig, Phineas and Ferb are premise-based. Shows like Simpsons and Bob's Burgers are script-based. (Phineas and Ferb co-creators Povenmire and Marsh commented on the shift from working on shows like The Simpsons to Phineas and Ferb. Script writers easily forgot about including Maggie Simpson because she was a silent character with no lines. Storyboard artists would more easily remember the presence of the silent Ferb.) SpongeBob was originally premise-based, but shifted to script-based with its peak of success. This resulted in a loss of visual humor. Gags related to SpongeBob's form were suddenly restricted to story points, rather than incidental humor. There was a lot more auditory dialogue and jokes. There is no shame to a script-based or premise-based show; both can lead to incredible productions. But the show's charm comes from its visual humor. I'll have to ask someone on the show soon about the current writing process. Wonder if it's changed.

Hey Pieguy. I wanted to propose a new Square Theory idea about analyzing the character of Plankton. The question being: Why does a lot of the fandom find Plankton sympathetic? Plankton is an over the top villain who knows he's evil and enjoys being evil yet over time you kind of end up feeling sorry for him. Hell, after the show went through seasonal rot, a lot of people claim he's the only likable main character left and do I even have to mention how many fans were outraged by his treatment in One Course Meal and Plankton's Regular. You even ended your TV movie idea with Mr Krabs giving Plankton the original Krusty Krab. I hope you take this idea to consideration.

I think the episode is a bit more distinct from "Dumped" than I get the impression you seem to feel yourself. The core of "Dumped" was Spongebob trying to win Gary back over after he chose to leave for Patrick, while this story has Spongebob legitimately wrong Gary and trying to find him and apologize. It makes "Dumped" more of a comedy at its core because Spongebob is getting very dramatic and bumbling about his antics when logically he's the only one that cares much about them, whereas this story clearly demonstrates at the end that Gary would acknowledge the apology when he can see it. The crux of "dumped" is a myriad of plans to win Gary back over and then living in denial, but HYSTS never has a point where Spongebob even pretends to be content with losing Gary, to the point he actively leaves work to go look for him, an act that for this character holds a lot of weight. There's also a distinction in that the old Snail Lady presents an obstacle to the ending, whether as a caretaker or a danger, since even if Gary does forgive Spongebob it raises the question of if he'd leave the cushy life, then if he can survive to make it back to Spongebob; Dumped has Gary as literally the only thing that decides who he stays with, he didn't have to give anything up or be rescued if he wanted Spongebob back as his owner, so the stakes were kept low and thus made the comedy more exaggerated by consequence. The other thing is that, as noted, any suffering, comedic or otherwise, is primarily self-inflicted in "Dumped," whereas in HYSTS, Spongebob is broken up over Gary being gone at his own fault, and during Gary's stray time, he's clearly afraid and starving. Sure there are jokes like the alley snails actually being friendly, but it's not brought on by Gary or Spongebob choosing to obsess over something comparatively trivial. I'm also not the type who takes the Status Quo for granted in a cartoon, in that I assume each episode will start in the same basic place, but not that they are required to end in the same place (like Tuna Patrick in "Hooked" or the ending of "Shanghaied"), and even if the situation is the same, the character's in such shows tend to change when they do dramatic episodes.

I feel the lost pet plot can be done with both good humor and drama. A good example is the Rugrats episode "Spike Runs Away". In that episode, Spike gets lost and the Pickles are trying to find him, searching the neighborhood and putting up signs. Stu (RIP) and Didi first go to the dog catcher, who is overdramatic and a really funny character. Tommy is obviously upset that Spike is lost, so Didi suggests to Stu to get another pet. What happens when Stu brings various different pets home is really funny, along with the guy who runs the pet shop. Towards the end, Tommy and Chuckie get more upset that Spike may never come back. While this is going on, the guy who found Spike comes to the door, and he is this really rich "fancy" guy, who feeds dogs caviar. When Spike finally gets home, there is a really good reunion scene between Tommy and Spike.

how was that episode bad how is it different from Secert Box they were selfish and foght in that episode same with Naughty Nautical Neighboors i thought the episode was very good and it was pretty funny Spongebob is rarely bad

@icecream hero Exactly. SpongeBob and Patrick got into fights before. And come on. Patrick may have been a bit jerkish in the episode, but he's not a sociopath like certain people are saying. At least he wasn't hurting SpongeBob in YMaM. The hatred for it is over-exaggerated to be honest.

I feel like a good example of doing different styles is TAWOG. Like PG said, they add and subtract certain elements and they are able to make episodes in different styles and genres, like horror in The Joy.

Even though I personally would give this episode a very low good, I would still agree that it is very overrated and that it is far from one of the greatest in the series like some have made it to be. It's a nice and touching episode for sure, but it's not like it's the only episode in the series that hits home in that way and it still could've used more jokes to really fill out the run time.

Good opinion. I Think it's Meh also, the tone was good but idk if jokes were needed here. The old lady character was interesting and the song was great.

"Wow that was a really good episode, but you know what, didn't have jokes so Eh, its a Meh. *I have never done that*" And from the Season vids: "if its not funny then its not a good episode" "But if its not funny then its not gonna get a Good" "but it was just not funny so i have to give it Meh" "You see Spongebob for the comedy, you dont come for the plot"
@NickTheEnlightened3 жыл бұрын
None of those examples you listed contradict what Pieguy said here. He said quite explicitly in this video that he's never called an episode meh if he genuinely felt it deserved a good, and none of those quotes by him say that he felt the episode should've gotten a good. Unless you're trying to imply that him not finding an episode good because of lack of comedy alone is stupid, in which case you're forgetting that SpongeBob is an inherently comedic show in nature. Yes, there are rare times when this show can deviate from the comedic elements to create a genuinely wonderful and fantastic story and thus still turn out successful (IE It's a SpongeBob Christmas, though even that episode still has a few funny moments), but generally speaking if a SpongeBob episode isn't funny, it does fail on some level. And there is a "middle ground" rating for a reason. Not everything is strictly good or bad.
@101Youfail8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree that this is meh. It's a bit too miserable for a Spongebob ep.
@crazychick961006 жыл бұрын
I'm kinda in the middle here, too. I think this is a way better story than Dumped (I hate that episode with a burning passion)! But I liked the sappy moments as a kid and as an adult. I still had the childlike innocence where I could relate with Spongebob's feelings because you can experience it right along with him in his universe. As an adult, I have had my cat recently pass away and my family was really sad, so I know the sadness of losing a pet. It makes me wish I had spent more time with her :'( It walks a fine line between just enough and too much, and I think the boundary was crossed a little bit with it being overbearing.I agree that it's a little too much sappiness. I don't think it's funny either because most of it is the fact that Spongebob is upset and crying too much, kinda like Dumped. But hey, at least Patrick isn't an asshole in this one than that one!!! So if I had your scale, I'd put in Meh as well.

Hey PieGuy, have you ever thought of doing a podcast about reviews? I most just listen to your videos since most of the time there are little visuals to actually look at (I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one). If you haven't thought of it before, I think you should consider it; I love listening to your voice.
