Went out this last trip a week ago to watch pier runners and unfortunately no runners but we did get to see a guy come back in a cop car (assuming the cop had to let the ship know that they'd be missing a passenger) and then the cop took the guy away. Dude was stuck in Mexico. Wonder if he's still there...

On my last cruise we had pier runners who came back nearly an hour late. The only reason we were still there was because there was also a medical emergency. The runners were allowed back on after a grilling and 45 mins later, the sick passenger and travel companions were disembarked. It was our first port and a very sad time for that poor family.

@@VacationImpossible never found out. We also had a helicopter evac of another sick person on our last sea day. We were an hour and a half late to port and didn’t get to disembark the ship until nearly noon, which made for a very relaxed disembarkation morning as we stayed in bed until 8am and didn’t have to leave the cabin until 9:30. It was quite a trip. But it was a valuable lesson to not be late back from shore leave.

The ONLY excuse I'll accept is if they rely on their cell phone's clock function. Some phones will automatically adjust to new time zones wherever the ship goes. But some require you to go into the settings and change it to detect different time zones. It all depends on the brand of phone. I took a vacation in Orlando last year and made sure to get the local time from a person working in the hotel. Then I adjusted the time on my watch and my cell phone.

A ship wouldn't leave without it's cruise director. I think he was out there to welcome them back / encourage them to hustle back

Absolutely. You can also double up by taking pictures of important documents with your phone, there's no guarantee the pictures will be accepted but it can't hurt to have a little redundancy 😉

How can you know what side of the ship will be facing the dock? What if the captain brings it in port (left) side towards the dock and a tug boat comes out and flips the ship around so he doesn't have to hit reverse to get out?

impatient ship drivers are now NOT allowed to leave passengers behind, if you have young children or very elderly ( 60+ ) people in your party then the boat MUST wait ! so relax, have that extra drink or buy that last minute souvenir , it`s YOUR vacation after all :-)

Keeping to a schedule isn't being impatient. They wait as long as they can but they can't wait forever. It might be your vacation but it's also hundreds of other people's as well and they got places to be
