The most beautiful phrasing in the history of cello playing. Without doubt the most all round master of the instrument to date.

Grand violoncelliste français, digne représentant de l'école française du violoncelle. Elégant, racé. Apprécie énormément.

He was by far the best sounding and masterful cellist of his day. You could eat off him, as we'd say.How nice to see this video. Bernie Zaslav

Why is he plucking the C string?
@schumacherenator7 жыл бұрын
Because those fat strings could use the extra help being activated. It's a little thing a lot of cellists do so that they don't have to grind into the string so much to get it ringing.

awesome french cellist, to be exact the aristocrat of the cellists

UltimateC2020 Great to see another former Schepps cello student on here. Not to be biased or anything, but really what is so great about the Fournier edition of Bach? Everything is all slurred and legato. As a musician myself, I found it rather difficult to express myself musically with even the dynamic phrases if not bowings /fingerings that made no sense to me. There are so many other flavorful "rocky road" editions that are sensible to even write in your own bowings, etc. to the most intermediate players. I find this one rather "vanilla". I know Schepps and I got into quite a few arguments regarding Bach and some of the other great cellists out there who tried to interpret the work. Anyhow I learned a valuable lesson that you need to respect the artists and the editors who have been working hard on publishing some of the greatest repertoire known to be - whether you favor it or not.

Superb, aristocratic playing. This is a welcome relief from the Hysterically Malformed school, which brings forth unlistenable string tone and pitch a half-step low.
@richtrophicherbs Жыл бұрын
a half-step lower than a convention recommended by the American Standards Association in 1936, taken up by the International Organization for Standardization in 1955 as Recommendation R 16, and not formalised until 1975 as ISO 16. Presumably it was the unlistenable string tone produced by gut that inspired Bach to go to the trouble of composing these cello masterpieces. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn_OoYp8gZ2LjaM
