Piers Loses It Over Sexist 'Handbags' Comment Debate | Good Morning Britain

BBC pundit Steve 'Tommo' Thompson has been dropped from commentating on the radio until 2021 after making remarks in which he referenced 'handbags' and 'the referee's wife' during an Accrington Stanley match. His 'handbags' comment during Lincoln's goalless draw at Accrington in League One last Saturday resulted in complaints from listeners and Thompson has been punished by the BBC for the rest of the year. While 'handbags' was one of the contentious comments made, the BBC have said three remarks were made in 20 minutes which were not aligned to their standards. Anything can be viewed as offensive to a group. The example she gives - Histrionic - could be seen as offensive to actors. It comes from the latin 'histro' meaning actor and has negative connortations, which implies over dramatic and often hypocritical.

2:05 And therein lies the problem. I do not believe in the policing of language unless it is libel, slander, or fraud, and those can be adjudicated in civil court. Once you let the mob decide what people can and can't say because it might offend someone, they will always push it further and further until you can't keep up with what the lastest offensive fad is. Language that causes actual harm to someone is very different to language that causes perceived harm.
