We were trained and bred to never truly be a tribe ever again…we found a way. A deep…deep CALLING …An OCEAN away called us back together. The seasoning in SOUTH America couldn’t stop it. In actuality Olanda Draper started this choir while in college (I know some of the original members…some of them were members of Temple of Deliverance COGIC) in 1986 and Ricky Dillard was still with Rev. Milton Brunson at the time Olanda started the Associates Choir. New G started in 1988 and recorded their first in 1989 on Muscle Shoals Sound Records and released in 1990. Ricky Dillard and New G appeared on a PBS special with Patti LaBelle after they won a McDonald Gospelfest Choir Competition in Chicago in 1989. Olanda and The Associates recorded and released their first album in 1990 on Word Records (which was a major label. Pastor Shirley Caesar helped them get that deal). Olanda has been directing this since his teens. He was one of Memphis top choirmasters as well as the COGIC. He was way ahead of the curve and died to soon. He is one of the reasons I direct and teach choirs the way I do today!
