Pig Farming - Pastured Pork VS CAFO.
Today we are talking about raising pastured pigs vs CAFO hogs. CAFO stands for confinement animal feeding operation which is the conventional way that a lot of meat in the US is raised. Animals are kept in confinement and fed rations instead of being allowed to roam and forage like nature intended. Pigs in this case are raised in houses with up to 3000 other pigs on concrete slatted floors where they do not have access to sunshine or fresh air. Their manure falls through the floor and is collected in manure lagoons which can present an environmental issue.
We choose to raise our pigs on pasture. Here they get plenty of sunshine, fresh air and have the ability to live like a pig; rooting the ground, rolling in the mud and expressing their full personality. Our pigs are a heritage breed that gets plenty of exercise which leads to a superior pork product on your table. Pastured pork is more flavorful and is higher in nutrition. Pastured pork also leads to better quality of life for the farmer by allowing for a less costly startup and the ability to shift and change if the need arises.
We own a small farm homestead in central North Carolina where we are learning to raise food for ourselves as well as provide food for customers in the surrounding area. We work to raise animals on pasture like they should be and provide good, healthy, clean food that is outside of the industrialized food system.
Be sure to subscribe and follow us for more ideas on how to make farming more effective and efficient which makes your life less stressful and more profitable.
Sheraton Park Farms practices holistic, sustainable farming and soil building using a rotational grazing model as we try to grow more grass on our farm.

I'm from Maryland but I grew up in Texas and Mississippi. I would live with my grandparent in Mississippi every summer. My grandfather raised pasture pigs he had around 200. So I guess I grew up on a pig farm It was my job to feed them twice a day. My grandfather was not rich, we had no tractor, but he taught me how to use mules. I hitched them to a wagon to carry the pig feed and O learned how to plow the corn fields. Field corn was feed to the pigs, and the corn was ground by a hand crank grinder. It was all hard work but I loved every minuet of it.

The amount of shots given would make u sick just too keep them healthy. I'm in Ohio now and getting a pastor pig farm started. By the way last time I priced a 2400 sow farm was 3 million in 1996 lol Great videos and your on the right track. May god bless you and your family.

I enjoy viewing all of the homestead and rural small farm videos, just as I do the confinement hog raising videos. I operated a very successful hog operation from 1977 - 1995 marketing between 850-1000 head each year. One year I had a field of wheat that had onions. I had pasture and shelter available so I swelled the onion wheat and fed it with hog supplement. The hogs absolutely loved the swelled wheat and wheat beer byproduct. I fed out about a hundred head from 50 pounds to market weight on it. It was easy to do. Take six 55 gallon barrels, fill it 2/3 full of wheat and fill almost full with water. Feed in large troughs. Always leave a little of the beer in the barrel as a starter. Feed once wheat becomes swollen, soft and fermented. Use a 38% protein supplement to provide a 14-15% protein feed. Works great.

Thank you for your service sir. My opinion isn't much but if you got a few acres give it a go. Chickens are easy to feed and water. My grandparents raised chickens without fence. It wasn't alot but enough to supply family and friends. Chickens would normally go in the coop every night before dark. My grandfather shut their door every night. Pigs can be raised in a small area. You could get a fence installed and feed n water. Id say give it a try. You never know how you'll do. Good luck 👍

Machelle Hutchins, I live in Temple Texas. So glad I found you. We are going to start having chickens. Trying to research and get all the info I can. I appreciate your videos. I’d love to try a pig too, but the root and make holes. My mom had a pet and you couldn’t walk in her back yard without stepping in a hole. LoL. I will enjoy watching all your videos. Thank you!!

G’day mate, great video Western Sydney Australia I’ve always believed a happy pig is a productive pig. I’ve done my time in intense pig farming(cafo I now farm my own pigs in a free range situation just like yours. I believe I had never seen a happy pig until I started my free range system. Neither are particularly hard. I would recommend starting with one and getting familiar with it then add the other. Trying to learn more than one at a time is challenging. Ask me how I know. 🤣

Thanks for the video. Concise, informative AND pleasant to watch. :). Alternating the same land between grazing and pasture each year seems like an excellent practice. Animals spread their own fertilizer and loosen the soil. Pigs would be great for that.
