I've been looking after them for 4 years now and I still wonder about that myself. I think it comes down to a couple of things. People don't understand why they get dirty and can't get clean: no access to water, all the fountains and sprinklers have been shut off, and water to drink and wash in is extremely scarce for them. People also think they carry diseases, but the CDC research shows that this is an exaggeration. Some people are just plain mean, unenlightened, low mentality, angry and hateful, and they can't stand the innocence in the face and eyes of a pigeon or any other bird. I see people point imaginary finger guns at them and say "bang! bang"! And call them disgusting flying rats. I usually have something to say about that.

@@btmeant578 I can tell you that I often have to take care of them when they're injured or sick. If I give them time and a place to heal, most of them recover nicely. Once they know they can trust you, they can sometimes be brats, but they are also some of the funniest critters on planet Earth. You'll have to clean up after them, but it's not that big of a deal. They like to wake you up in the morning by jumping on your head and pecking you, but generally they aren't too much trouble. You probably have a bunch of them in your yard or around your house. See if you can make friends with one and see how it goes . Humans will cause you more grief than pigeon's ever dreamed of.

@@btmeant578 I suggest getting a homing pigeon if you haven't already done so. They adapt well indoors and you can release them outdoors for free flights. Just make sure to get them really young or in pairs so they can build a nest and establish your house as their home. I've had the same 4 pigeons for over 14 years, and I release them outdoors every now and then to fly and be free, then they come back home within an hour or two. They make amazing pets. Good luck.

He is so lovely. My lovely pigeon Babushka was attacked and killed by a bird of prey while she was relaxing on our roof. We've never seen any birds of prey around that's why we only left her unattended, it was for 10 mins, but it was long enough for the tragedy to be consumed... Both me and my boyfriend are destroyed. She was so adorable, so innocent and also bossy at the same time. She used to peck my bunny sleepers and when the fight was over she would sleep on them all relaxed. Such a character! We miss her very much.

Once a theif stole many pigeons from our backyard farmhouse, one was very special to me, her name was Macu, she was black n white spotty colored and sometime used to eat rice from my own dish where I used to eat. I was only 12 year old then, cried a lot that day.... Miss her

I feel for you. We had our first up close hawk attack on our 10 birds on the roof. Complete pandemonium. We did lose one young bird, but I think he just got lost in the chaos. 2 huge hawks came out of nowhere and flew 5 feet away from me. Birds are still skittish and that was 10 days ago

PIGEONS DESPERATELY NEED HELP !! 90% of pigeons in cities die in their first year of their lifes. The others don't live longer than 2-3 years. In nature, they can live up to 12-15 years ! They have nothing to eat, they are forced to eat trash and they freeze to death. Pigeons can NOT live naturally in cities. They are only here because of breeders !
