Pigeons and doves constitute the bird family Columbidae, which includes about 310 species.
Pigeons and doves are stout-bodied birds with short necks, and short slender bills (and in some species, these bills feature fleshy ceres). They primarily feed on seeds, fruits, and plants. This family occurs worldwide, but the greatest variety is in the Indomalaya and Australasia ecozones. In general, the terms "dove" and "pigeon" are used somewhat interchangeably. Pigeon is a French word that derives from the Latin pipio, for a "peeping" chick, while dove is a Germanic word that refers to the bird's diving flight. In ornithological practice, "dove" tends to be used for smaller species and "pigeon" for larger ones, but this is in no way consistently applied, and historically, the common names for these birds involve a great deal of variation between the terms. The species most commonly referred to as "pigeon" is the rock dove, one subspecies of which, the domestic pigeon, is common in many cities as the feral pigeon. Pigeons and doves are likely the most common birds in the world.
Doves and pigeons build relatively flimsy nests - often using sticks and other debris - which may be placed in trees, on ledges, or on the ground, depending on species. They lay one or two eggs at a time, and both parents care for the young, which leave the nest after seven to 28 days. Unlike most birds, both sexes of doves and pigeons produce "crop milk" to feed to their young, secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop. Young doves and pigeons are called "squabs".
The adjective "columbine" refers to pigeons and doves.

After 7 years of looking after all of my little pals on a daily basis, I have come to the conclusion that the haters hate themselves mainly, and just about everything else on earth. It's just convenient that the pigeons happen to be there in order for them to have something to hate. If it wasn't the pigeons, it'd be something or somebody else.

I hated them before I owned them. I think the main reason has to do with stereotypes. A lot of it has to do with the fact that they like to poop on everything and when they infest a building it can be troublesome but I don't think that's a great reason to hate them. Honestly it's just people who are uneducated about the subject that hate them.

@@1950sFordGuy They were our friends for thousands of years, and as soon as the telephone and radio became commonplace, they were obsolete and people kicked them to the curb. With no place to go, they went to the cities. As long as parks had fountains and sprinklers, they could stay reasonably clean, but then one day, planet earth, which is 70% water, all of a sudden had no water. Off went the fountains and sprinklers, the pigeons got dirty, and now everybody hates them. It makes me sick to hear of the things that people say and do to them. They're outcasts, and as an outcast myself, I feel a comraderie with them and I consider them to be very good friends. I actually prefer them to most of the humans I meet these days.

@@BEGOTT3N I just got back from feeding mine. It's a wonderful routine that I have been doing twice a day for nearly 8 years. 15 of the original 100 or more that I started with are still here. They live on the roof of the building across the street, and they're as healthy as a horse and clean as a whistle. They can see me from the tops of the buildings and they come right to me every time I open the door. The only way anybody could ever make me stop is to put me in a place where there are no birds.

a rock pigeon decided to make me his new owner, he stays in my barn in a pigeon penthouse suite with no door. He chooses to stay so I come out every day to feed him and kick it for a few. just recently he started coming into the house and I play this for him. he puffs up and paces around lol. Last year around summer i had to wake up early for a medical check which i didnt want to go. My husband set his alarm clock because he knew i wont set mine to avoid waking up and go to the clinic. He set his alarm as a pigeon sound because he knew i hate when pigeons come to our balcony and shitting all over it. So when his alarm started i frantically jumped out of my bed and ran out to the balcony just to notice that the sound comes from the room along with my husband's laugh. I didn't went to the medical check after all because i was angry of him. Rest in peace my dear Freddy!

Always been wondering... Why do rock doves coo so quietly as compared to wood pigeons, collared doves, mourning doves and ringneck doves?

Just a guess but i think it has to do with how they live - rock doves/feral pigeons live close together so the 'territory' they want for a nest is usually only a foot or two of ledge. Wood pigeons have much larger territories, same with collared doves. I would guess that the volume has a lot to do with that, that they need to be heard further away.

@@xaiano794 that makes complete sense, rock doves/ferals do prefer more enclosed spaces and tend to be more gregarious whereas the others nest on tree branches, usually have entire trees to themselves and travel further for food. So they need to communicate according to their life styles and without unnecessarily attracting predators Thanks

Around a week ago a baby pigeon came on my terrace in wounded condition and he was not able to fly or walk..his nails were not black completely..they were white like a fresh nails so I assmumed that it was a baby pigeon..I had never treated a bird or any animal before in rescue condition..so I took him down to my house and trying to drink water but he was too scared! After some time he drank some water and was pooping all around. The next day he gets little frank with me and was playing on his own and I was too happy to see him like this. But he was not eating anything..I feed him milk with spoon too. Then after picking him up I saw some tiny insects under his wings so I carefully bathed him with dettol and water..and I don't know why after bathing he became too down and was frightened with me to hell..!! It was heart breaking for me..whole night all I was praying to god for his recovery😣 but on the next morning when I put him on the terrace in this hope that may be it will get energy but........he left me right in front of my eyes..I was crying like hell..the scene was too scary for me😣😣 god knows what I did wrong to him..is it bathing or anything else??? I beg to god to save him but.... Although it was with me for only 2 days but I don't know what kind of bond it was! I am dying in guilt....!!!
