We Are Back!? (December Loft Status)

Sorry for not posting for so long and thank you for the questions and support. This is a short update about the loft in December. I don't separate the racers until February because it is easier for me and they are more happy this way. I know, there are too many birds but I can't cull any of them, I feel sorry for each of them - even if many of them are probably very bad racers and many of the professional fanciers would cull them. I also tried to give up racing but I can't do that yet. I reduced the moulting mix in December to about 30% and will slowly reduce it to zero in January. There are still a few birds with the last wing feather developing. What do you think about my mixes and grit? Would you add or remove something? I used to have the buckets of "minerals" where the grit is mixed with pink powder and they also contain seeds. My conclusion is they are a waste of money and I prefer to offer the pink powder separately. I prefer they consume vitamineral when they feel the need: when growing youngsters, after being sick, after big efforts, when laying. The winter flight became almost impossible but I don't want to give up yet. Releasing pigeons to fly is my favorite part of this hobby. I removed from the team most of the remaining latebreds and only kept the previous winter mature survivors and just 5 youngsters bred from these, hoping that a much smaller flock with experienced birds will handle the attacks better. There were some incredibly hard days with falcons chasing the flock high in the sky, 2 hawks waiting below and after the pigeon escaped all of these and tried to enter the loft, the third hawk almost got it under my nose 2-3 meters away from the loft entrance. I couldn't film most of the scenes because I had to save my pigeons and "fight" with the hawks coming in my garden. All the survivors will enjoy the summer at home breeding, none of them will have to race.

I have a lot of Respect for You Sir, I too raise My Pigeons just to provide a safe haven for an Animal that so many People dislike and also for the joy it brings Me just to watch them live their lives and raise their families I would never dream of culling any of them.

Happy New Year! I don't use products on the feed, anything I tried made them eat less, looking like they don't have appetite. It is also time consuming and I am lazy. :) I bought several oils in the past and all of them expired, unused. The last one I got last year, I only used it a few times. How's it going? How many birds will you race in 2025?

I checked and the moulting mix has flaxseed in it. They collect all those tiny seeds so I guess they like them.

No snow. Most of the winters in the last years were like this. It usually starts to snow in Jan-Feb and even March when we have to release the racing birds and start training.😂

Cum zicea maestrul Schaerlaekens : hrănirea este o artă. Felicitări pentru produsele de înaltă calitate! Mi-au atras atenția : Bătrânul Lup Ambasador, hrana, cuca de la începutul lotului de femele și culoarea solzata care predomina în lotul de zburători de iarna. Apropo de asta, așa s-au selectat, sau e doar un caz?

Cei mai multi se trag din batranul Ambasador, de aici culoarea solzata. Din 28, 20 sunt fii directi, nepoti si stranepoti. Este un stil de porumbel care nu se ingrasa deloc, si dupa 2 saptamani inchisi zboara afara la fel de bine pe cand alte linii se ingrasa daca nu ii limitez din mancare. Toamna si iarna asta pana acum a fost masacru la atacuri si am decis sa inchid tardivii ramasi din matca/zbor, unii fiind din pasari aduse recent din alte zone... am pierdut la atacuri si cate 3 pe zi iar din cei ramasi unii au facut adeno de la stres si au murit (vaccinati fiind). Sunt foarte dezamagit la cat de slabi imunitar sunt porumbeii din multe crescatorii (numai anul trecut am adus 5 direct din campioni nationali si au fost praf atat acasa ca imunitate cat si la etape). Referitor la culori, am avut in 2018 si o alba care a rezistat iarna, cred ca nu e asa importanta culoarea la atac pe stol, doar la etape in zbor individual se vede mai usor de departe pe fundal inchis, de aici dezavantajul lor.

Hello, what do you think about recording all the individuals after the winter season, those that remained and showing those that died along with the attack on the individual bird that died?

I couldn't film much this winter because of the many hawks attacking at the loft after the pigeons escaped from the falcon. I can't just film and not help my pigeons escape the hawk. The hawks drive me crazy. Last time after about 1,5 hours of falcon attacks when the flock finally got home with no losses, a hawk got a pigeon in the ambush at the loft right after they landed.
