of all the vids of these i've seen, you are literally the only one thats actually shown that you treated the rust properly..it set my ocd off when i see a vid and i don't know if they've fixed the rust or just covered.. it also gets my ocd off when they drill into metal to mouint stuff, but don't treat the bare metal they've caused in the process...
@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I try to avoid drilling into the van for that very reason, but like you say, no one treats it.
@bertv73732 жыл бұрын
where do you see it? i'm also interested in it, for instance with the Van-X curtain it seems like you drill & screw directly in the van but nothing is treated? or did I miss something? :)
@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
@@bertv7373 hey, at the start there is a section where the rust is treated. With the van x curtains I don't do anything for treatment as there is no rust. :)
@bertv73732 жыл бұрын
@@willsvanadventures aha, I understand! but out of curiousity (not much experience here): don't you create fragile points in the metal prone to rust by screwing into them to install those x-curtains?

I'm shortly buying a VW Caddy Life and will do a simple conversion like this (I mean, you did it properly), for anyone watching who's thinking of getting a small van like this, to convert into a camper, the Caddy is a good choice, there's also a Peugot Partner tepee, A Fiat Doblo or a Ford Tourneo Courier, and others.. a slightly larger but good, reliable van would be something like a Nissan NV200...You can get it with windows all around like the other cars mentioned too... Peace...

I prefer PVC instead of Wood,It last longer,and It weigts less. For the floor i would have used a flexible glue as the engenier floor needs to be able to expand and contract,may be vinyl flooring it has more resitance to water . That rust 😟 remember the open rocker panel construction - behind the inner fender you can look into those for the whole lenght to the rear wheel. Our Caddy from 2005 had fist size rust holes in both sides just after 8 years - it was a beloved and well maintained family car. We cleaned the rocker panel twice a year but no chance against rust.
@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
Oh no! That's awful, where is the inner fender? I've nor heard of that before. As in the rear wheel arches?
@rupprechtknecht31032 жыл бұрын
@@willsvanadventures to get a look onto the mess it is enough to turn a front wheel to the outside ( steering wheel complete to the right ) - then remove the two lowest screws of the inner plastic fender and look behind the fender. There will be a lot of dirt and in our case it was more than 3 liters of water / mud mixture which came out of the rocker panel. It was when our Caddy was 6 months old. Also have a look on the deflector panel at the wipers. The rhd version will have two open holes on top which are for the lhd wiper arms. Those holes must be closed with plugs - otherwise the leafs will fall into and later there is a lot of soil there. The water / leafs / soil is guided to fall direct to the open position of the rocker panels. It looks if VW made that with intention....

Where for you get those blinds? Like what are they called? Fantastic video btw!!
@willsvanadventures2 жыл бұрын
Hey, they are just called barn door curtains I'm pretty sure, from a company called vanx. If you head to my channel I have a fitting video for the curtains with the link to buy them.

Looks great! How long did this take you start to finish? What kind of budget was this? We’ve got a T4, but thinking about a practical caddy next!
@willsvanadventures Жыл бұрын
Hey, thank you! So that took me about 2months but I was doing it in the evenings and weekends, so if you did it full time could do it way quicker. Budget was about £500. I've done a video on the cost breakdown as well. T4 sounds awesome!

Wicked video! Out of curiosity, what do you do about insurance on a self converted van? To most people declare the modifications or not bother?
@willsvanadventures Жыл бұрын
I always declare them, as if you don't, you're insurance is void and could possibly be done for fraud. Just get good insurance such as Adrian flux who cover all modifications.

Glad it helped! I did it on evenings and weekends from about March to April. So not too long. If you had time off work I reckon could do it in a week or 2.

HI Guys, really nice job and vid you did with your Caddy! Thx for sharing! Did you make a video about how it was holding up to your expectations over the last 15 months? And on a sidenote: I saw a recommendation, not to put insulation into the doors since they are not really waterproof and usually have holes on the bottom to let the incoming water get out... any problems with that?
@willsvanadventures Жыл бұрын
Hey, that's interesting about the door. I hadn't heard that before. I don't think it would make difference with the bottle plastic as it doesn't hold moisture. I don't have the van anymore but I haven't heard anything bad about it since haha so think it's all good 🙂
