Background noise can be reduced just by hanging lots of blankets, sheets and towels over the windows and over the walls and between the microphone and the computer fan. Or you can create a sound fort by hanging all this stuff over a table and getting under it. Just something I learned in sound and music recording classes.

There are a lot of strategies for combating the various types of noise that makes its way onto an audio recording. One of the simple ways to cut down on a lot of sounds is to use a cardioid microphone and point it in the direction of the speaker, but away from the direction of any offending noises (fans etc.). Cardioid microphones receive sound very poorly in the opposite direction from their intended use. The fort-building is called "baffling" and is a very useful technique, in particular for recording loud guitar amps.
