I could never jump off the ice without falling. I had to be moving and feel the edge. I got a beautiful axel by jumping straight up very hard and pulling in. Since I already had horizontal speed (I always went as fast as I could control), adding the high vertical jump gave me plenty of time and distance to complete the rotation. Of course that was before I broke my ankle and has part of it fused.

Height, speed, and rotational power are required for the axel jump. I'm surprised you've completed axel ! I'm still impossible on the ice. Did you broke your ankle? Me too... : (

@@onice_song when I started skating, they told me that adult skaters don't learn axels. I just had to prove them wrong. I'm 5'8" tall, so it was hard. I could also do a double salchow, but not a clean landing. Shorter people have a lower center of gravity and are stronger in proportion to their size than tall people. They also rotate faster. Basketball players have long tendons and ligaments, which are more fragile. That's why a basketball player does serious harm to a joint by stepping wrong and a small person like Yuzuru Hanyu can practically land sideways and still pull off the jump. Small people also rotate faster. Imagine breaking a long thin stick. Very easy. It's much harder to break a short thin stick. My ankle had nothing to do with skating. But it's a cool story. We were on vacation in the mountains on a nose to tail mule ride. (Not challenging, but pretty) My mule fell down. I tried to jump off, but my foot stuck in the stirrup. I broke my ankle in the joint. I had a 3 mile stretcher ride and a 50 mile ambulance ride. At least it's more interesting than tripping on my stairs. If you get hurt, do it in style. So now my ankle only moves up and down like a hinge and I couldn't skate no matter what. I still have my horses and I ride them. My only hangup is that I don't ride strange horses or mules. I've broken all of my ribs a few times because I don't bounce anymore. And still I ride. The trick is to stop, take a deep breath, and let the tension leave your body. If you're not calm, you can't accomplish anything. In skating you get hurt. Horses pick up your mood. If you aren't calm you end up with 1000 pounds of NO. Things go better if you're calm and relaxed.
