I first surfed Piha bar in the mid 70s and continued to do so till about 8 years ago when both hips packed up due to arthritis. I have subsequently had them replaced but alas my surfing days are over. I am sure that the stormwater outflow structure that was built (I think in the early 90s) near the southern car park, is what wrecked the bar. I have many fond memories of picking up waves out past the keyhole, and have them smoke all the way through to the surf club.

I lived there for 10 years on Teahuahu Road. Surfed with Indian Nick, Chad and company. Good times.

Vova, you need to pray to Huey, the surf god will see you get some good waves. You just sit in the line up and scream 'Give me a wave Huey'' . It works for me at Piha.

It's two things... There is a huge ledge out at sea which causes the water to churn up like a washing machine. Plus the prevailing wind direction comes from the west, which causes the surface to become unsettled. In some years, you will get many clean days. In other years, it can be hard to find a clean day.
