Ed and Balrog are truly family. You can tell both their hearts are breaking for going their separate ways. Ed truly doesn't want to lose himself and hurt Balrog in anyway and Balrog doesn't care, so as long as he has Ed in his life. That truly is family right there. Street Fighter always manages to hit the heart strings in some way.

You can tell they were just trying to do better than Abel. The relationship with Balrog/Boxer, his unnatural growth nightmares, and even his unique fighting style makes him stand out better than Abel even though there are to many new characters being added. I am still disappointed that Abel wasn't going to make a return. His personality was dull, but his fighting style made him one of the best characters in Street Fighter 4. Capcom could of made it where his personality has changed after he discovered his true origins. They managed to change Charlie with some good result's, so anything is possible.

More than that, Ed was his son. He raised Ed, taught him how to fight, survive and thrive in the world. He was even willing to take care of Ed if Ed aged to be a grandpa, feeding him, washing him, etc. He loves him like a father loves a son and Ed loves him as a son to a father.

After years of Balrog being shown as a selfish greedy man who's willing to work with terrorists purely for money, this is the first time he was shown his positive side and that he truly wanted a friend, unfortunate that he and Ed ended up going on different paths, Ed wanting to reform himself and not wanting Balrog to be hurt should he go off the deep end.
