Theres gonna be haters no matter what you do, I'm from South Florida so my idea of spear fishing is free diving down on a ship wreck or reef and harvesting all kinds of fish with a Hawaiian sling, but now I live in NW Ohio and fish in Michigan frequently, gonna be trying out some spear fishing in the great white north if we can get any decent ice!!
@mattmcnicholas37355 жыл бұрын
It's just important we all acknowledge that bag limits are set by wildlife biologists who are much more educated than us on topics like sustainability of a fishery, and spear fishermen have to abide by the same set of rules and bag limits that a hook and line angler has to follow.

Great video! I just moved to Monroe on the boat slips of Lake Erie where they catch a lot of perch and Pike and I'm going to try to Spearfish for the first time this year. How far under the ice do you set your Pike decoy and what is the depth of the water that you're fishing here at the slips it ranges from 8 to 12 feet
@jimmygretz5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the depth of water for the decoy but generally you want it about 2 feet below the ice. As far as depth of water, try to sit right on the break from shallow to deep.

With a little research it’s pretty easy to tell the difference! We generally put the same hunk of ice we took out of the hole back in the hole and mark it with a branch.

What kind of fish is at 8:01 and also in the beginning? Looks like a bowfin or some kinda sucker.

That’s a largemouth bass the way to tell the difference between the two is LM have a black line at the end of their tail.

Kevin Gunnery I don’t think that’s a largemouth. I spear a lot. I see Tons of largemouth constantly. Notice the dorsal fin goes all the way to the tail. I’m sticking with bowfin.

I like spearing the jumbo perch that don't like to bite. But I usually catch them with Ken hooks. I will spear pike too but it's better to be selective and let the small pike go.

@@skatemetal5062 unfortunately you're completely wrong in my case. I have a 50 acre hobby farm that I've inrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. The farm borders a lake so they have you seed it down into native grasses and wildflowers on a 10 or 15 year contract. I also raise and release between 200-300 ringneck pheasants on that CRP and I don't hunt them. I also leave 4 acres of corn/soybeans for the pheasants, deer and turkey to eat in the winter months. You can see a sliver of it in my profile pic...so there you have it a conservative doing that...👌🏻

you should try normal ice fishing because you are destroying such a good fishery
@zimks5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s going to be really hard for St.Clair to rebound after they kept like two pike and a couple perch... you fucking twat
@thomasliptrott38345 жыл бұрын
Taking two pike and 3 perch is going to destroy the fishery? That’s a pretty slow day as far as ice fishing goes and won’t even make a dent in the populations. I think most guys could catch more fish with tipups and jig poles than spearing.
@pikemike4705 жыл бұрын
at least with ice fishing you can put the fish back instead of killing it instantly
@zimks5 жыл бұрын
PikeMike have you ever caught a fish past 20ft and released it? Guess what you probably killed a fish!
@charlie_49875 жыл бұрын
I completely agree because even if they only took 5 fish what if there was 100 anglers on the lake all doing the same thing then that could be 500 fish lost in 1 day. So I think it should be illegal
@markpine22505 жыл бұрын
Yeah, great, spear all the pregnant females! You need to think about what you are doing my friend. There are plenty of fish to catch and eat, why would you target the spawners?
@bluewidow17345 жыл бұрын

Even if this was legal up here in Ontario, and even though our lakes have as much or more fish than L. St. Clair, I wouldn't want to do this. It doesn't seem fun, or sportsman like, and seems kind of barbaric. The fish you speared will have damaged tissue, so are not as good eating as rod-caught fish, and you cannot release any of the fish, if you for whatever reason wanted to. Also, if you didn't properly spear the fish, and just dinged it, and it got away, it is very likely to die from its injuries....so this is very unethical in my books, but to each his own I guess. I shake my head at the prospect of spearing a Perch, when they are SO INCREDIBLY FUN to catch on ultralight tackle in the winter!!! You have no idea what you are missing out on!
@zimks5 жыл бұрын
The Fish Fin-atic they kept like two pike a like 4 perch, not sure how st. Clair population will rebound off this tremendous loss.... I fail to see a difference between a guy going out and catching a few fish to eat and a guy going out and spearing a few fish.

@meadrenalinejunkie5 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you on this one The Fish Fin-antic, in a way this reminds me of another issue altogether that bothers me here, native fishing here in Ontario, Bay of Quinte on Eastern Lake Ontario has native's legally allowed to net (as many as they want)walleye and sometimes that is detrimental to the population as its done when the big mature fish have migrated into the bay. I think all the methods should be done with science to decide how many fish can be netted or speared.
@thefishfin-atic71065 жыл бұрын
@@meadrenalinejunkie Don't even get me started on this issue!!!!!!!!!!! It REALLY REALLY REALLY pisses me off!!!! I have seen amazing fisheries - especially Walleye - shut down completely by native netting, and it's absolutely disgusting in my opinion. If the natives want to exercise their "rights" to net spawning fish, then they should be allowed to do so, but with traditional native ways, such as birchbark canoes, and hand-held lines made of moose skin, and hooks made of bone. No gas motors, no metal hooks, no sonar, no GPS, no nets, no guns, no cell phones. They want to harvest fish based on traditional rights, then do so with traditional methods - today's modern native slaughter of our natural resources absolutely disgusts me.
