the orange pike Xingu I you mentioned is often sold as Xingu II in pet trade where I live in Washington state. They are rare to find in the pet shop, and I had one ten years ago and they are beautiful and fierce. I didn't know you are only supposed to feed them twice a week. Good to know.

Great video. Did not now that about feeding less but have always noticed over weight fish in KZbin. Have you spawned any of the large lugubris pikes?
@belowwater4 жыл бұрын
yes, but not the ones from Xingu. Hopefully this year, i am trying with Xingu 1, several people in the US and Japan have bred them. We will make a feeding video later this year.

@@belowwater thanks for the reply. Such good content. Not very much specific information about pikes especially breeding them. Look forward to the next video

How big does Xingu 1 get? and are they aggressive in captivity?
@belowwater3 жыл бұрын
45cm for the males, Crenicichla are not really aggressive but i would also not keep a fish this size in less than 2m long aquaria

Very educational video, I have a xingu 1 almost 7 inches, have been feeding it around every 3- 4 days but have noticed that his fins are nowhere near as red as they used to be before. Have tried feeding it shrimp, shrimp based pellets, and other food but it's fins are not getting darker, any advice would help thank you. I could send any pictures if necessary

Don't forget that the Xingu has very warm water, right around 30 C, and that these fish don't eat every day in nature. If you feed a rich diet like this, i would feed them no more than twice a week, make sure the water is nice and warm, and you change a large portion of the water weekly.

Hi Oliver, nice video! Thanks for making it! I have a question which is not related to pike cichlids, but need your advice. In the video, you said to keep these fish healthy in long term, it's better to keep them under fed. Will you do the same to Retroculus xinguensis? I have a group of them, but I feed them every day. I am thinking whether I should change the frequency. Thanks!
@belowwater4 жыл бұрын
You can feed them daily, but they need tons of current so they waste that energy, if you see that they start to look like most of us, better reduce feeding, or add more current. Thin fish always live longer, and you can use that increase in food to get fish to breed.
@RaulChiang4 жыл бұрын
@@belowwater Got it. Will give them more current. Thanks Oliver!

I am Bilal M., from India recently I purchased some captive breed plecos now am keeping them in ADA substrate (clay) is it good or shall change to river sand with river stone? i can collect the sand from Indian river my doubt is will the content in the sand create any problem?In which way we can check the sand quality?which way we can test and process the sand that collected from the river
@belowwater4 жыл бұрын
i would always keep sand, you rarely see gravels in nature. I think your "wild" Indian sand is fine. For disease it is enough if you dry it (or boil it). You should check to make sure it does not harden the water too much (my assumption is that most sand in India will not). I bet the Ghats has some very nice sand that would be ideal. Go closer to a fast flowing and clear river, so you have less clay.

@@belowwater Sir I already collected sand from fast flowing rivers I tested the TDS of the river water and it was 12 .TDS in my home water is 33 after cleaning the sand I added my tap with TDS 33 in the sand , after one day the TDS changed to 100.Shall i use the sand
@belowwater4 жыл бұрын
that will depend if the fish you are keeping with a TDS of 100, but likely it is no problem. Maybe go to a different area, some have light coloured quartz sand that is inert.
