Pike Fishing on the River Ouse

In this episode I dust down the dead bait rods and go in search of some river pike. Situated just north of York, I go dead bait fishing for pike on the Yorkshire Ouse at Beningbrough Park. The big sand bed just opposite the Nidd mouth is a natural holding spot for many species and the River Ouse looked in prime condition for some predator action.

Thanks SheppeyFishTales. We're lucky to get some lovely coloured pike in the Ouse. These were only small but hopefully will get back for some bigger ones soon but the river has got 15 ft of extra water in at present after storm Ciara. Sub back. 👍

Deadbaits are Daiwa Regal XP and the spin rod is a fox rage spin m270, all are several years old. The fox rod was one of the 1st they launched, nice little rod.

I appreciate that anglers like to help others, but I can never understand why people name their favourite spots on KZbin or the internet in general. This spot is already well enough known without advertising it further. Pike are a species that thrive on neglect and suffer with regular recaptures and bad handling by inexperienced anglers. Sorry to be a jobs'worth, but it clearly states in the York DAA yearbook that the sandbed is no longer part of the fishing rights. The National Trust stopped fishing in that swim when the ferry was reinstated a few years' ago. Admittedly, the sand bed is much abused by many idiots and angling is one of the least damaging activities there, but the NT will take a dim view if anglers ignore the rules and that could adversely affect the fishing rights for the rest of the stretch.

So what's your point? Advertising a spot or angling techniques? I'm aware it's not YDAA though many will think it is as it has to be approached from both ends through YDAA water. As for inexperienced anglers, how does one become experienced if not allowed to access waters where they are likely to capture their chosen quarry? Please don't say through guiding or coaching as the vast majority of us just got out there and learnt as kids. At least with the advent of KZbin etc we try to show the inexperienced how to do it properly, I'm not saying I'm perfect but I do try to ensure every fish I hook and land goes.back unharmed, pike or otherwise. BTW, I'm not offended and I respect your comments and thoughts so please don't be offended by mine. Take care and tight lines 🎣👍

@@HOOKEDFishingChannel Sorry, I wasn't criticising your video or techniques at all. In fact it is a very good film. I maybe made too many points at once. It is just that I live very near that stretch of the Ouse and the sand bed is a well known and much abused area (by non-anglers). I suppose what I was trying to say is that demonstrating correct techniques for pike (and other species) is great, as is helping others with their fishing. I personally feel that naming rivers, or even stretches is fine, but maybe not individual swims. It can lead to overfishing and with pike, that can be a problem. Just my opinion and others will disagree. It is a shame that the sandbed was withdrawn from the YDAA fishing rights and, as a local, I personally don't have a problem with anglers fishing the sandbed, but I was just pointing out that the landowner (or other users of the sandbed) may object. If it is fished, it is best to do so at quiet times (midweek, early and late and in winter). It was mayhem down there last summer after lockdown ended (swimmers, boats, parties)! I was trying to be constructive and didn't want to come across as a 'jobs' worth' (as can happen with the written word).

Totally understand mate and not taking offence, just trying to get your take on things. I probably won't advertise swims or stretches quite as freely in the future, particularly where pike are concerned as people do get upset but will still try to educate on techniques and areas in general. I'm not particularly precious about swims but totally understand that there are people out there who take the p#ss, and that social media can add unwanted pressure on a venue.
