From an old timer that pike fished for over 50 years you will hook up many more fish if you let them finish their first run stop to turn the minnow and swallow it then they will start to move away and that is the time to set the hook. My hookups are over 90%.

For those that are not used to circle hooks: Circle hooks go well with letting the Pike run longer. They will usually run, stop, turn the bait around, and then swallow it. Then start moving again. All you need to do then is pull in the line. Do not set the hook like a J-hook as you will pull the circle hook right out of their mouth. If one just pulls the line slowly until the fish is on, the circle hook will pin up on the side of the fish's mouth. I use circle hooks all the time. More than doubled my hook up percentage.

When you release those pike it funny how well they find the hole while flopping! About 50/50 lost fish and caught fish, but get a little better after a while. Not your hole dude! Put some water in that minnow bucket. They’re starving for oxygen. 22 pike is a good day of fishing! Good job guys!

Beaver Dam tip-ups are meant to be set on the "loop" wire. If they are set on the loop, the flag can't reach the board to freeze to it. The vertical wire goes through the hole in the loop and the loop goes under the spinner. That way the wind has a very hard time tripping the flag. There are four tension settings on a BD. Two on each end of the spinner. It depends on if the spinner is turning into or away from the loop for the other two tensions.
@reidsimonson2 жыл бұрын
Been tip up fishing for 35 years. Have never had a flag freeze to a board. Not sure what you are doing. Doesn’t need to go on the loop but it can.

@@Wisconsin_Fisherman We'll be yaking pretty soon for some eyes on Bago. We seen a few out on some ice yesterday by Strobe Island on Little Butte Des Morts, but that was just crazy after getting 1-2 inches of rain and a week of 40ish degree highs and a LOT of open water.

With that many dinks in the pond, it's not a healthy fishery. You need to remove all those fish if you want to catch any big ones. They're all stunted.
