I especially like that your doing this about midway through your Italian wars series, as it adds some extra context/related content. You provide some of the best historical content out there. Also, does anybody know the name of the chad who beat up Tetzel?

@@htoodoh5770 Yes you are right.. But HRE must be done by someone.. There is virtually no documentary about it, which is a shame.. Ollie Bye did a HRE documentary, but it was too compressed to be meaningful... Maybe one way out is to take a slice in time.. For example, take the year 1500 or 1600 and ivestigate all the domains, laws, princedoms, ruling families, ongoing feuds, trade routes etc of that year.. All on maps.. An even smaller project may be a detailed history of hansa..

And in the background runs the italian wars... 1483: luther born 1494: italian wars start 1512: battle of ravenna 1513: battle of novara 1515: battle of marignano 1516: luthers 95 theses 1521: diet of worms 1525: battle of pavia 1527 sack of rome etc.. So reformation and italian wars are sort of interwoven... Is there any other event during this period of european history which goes parallel with reformation+italian wars? maybe ottoman attack to hungary? Do italian wars and reformation affected each other?
@pikeshotBattles4 жыл бұрын
Yep... Ottoman invasion and Portuguese and Spanish colonization going on simultaneously, all affecting each other. I mentioned the Reformation in Italian Wars 9, and also the Italian Wars will come up in Reformation 2, 3. But the main thig is that with the Reformation, wars will become more ideological and less dynastic.

1519 tenochtitlan is conquered by Cortez and his army, 1526 Ottoman's destroy Louis of Hungary's army at Mohacs, Swiss Reformation begins under Ulrich Zwingli, Francois is building his epic hunting lodge of Chambord and the Bible is being translated in English by Tyndale, etc...all these events happening in a age to be alive in!

Don’t like showing the HRE states +Spain as independent. The only ones independent were the ones in rebellion, and only during their years of rebellion or foreign occupation. The status quo in the empire was as a state, Voltaire notwithstanding. The habsburgs controlled the affairs of all the states, except ones in Union with a foreign crown, until Prussia broke from Poland and turned its Brandenburg territory into one of those in union with the “foreign” Prussian crown. But before that the emperor dominated the states aside form those in rebellion, even the protestant ones as long as they weren’t siding militarily against him

Thanks as always for the amazing content you put out. The production quality's really through the roof. Oddly enough I remember Richard Popkin, in his History of Scepticism (great book btw), saying that Savonarola was another almost-maybe-Reformation moment. He says that Savonarola was interested in opening the pandora's box of a systematic critique of church authority - and even that shortly before his death, he was promoting some of the first translations of ancient sceptical texts (I believe Sextus Empiricus), which would have such a massive importance in the debates between Luther and Erasmus, Lutherans and Calvinists, etc.
@pikeshotBattles4 жыл бұрын
Savonarola was probably informed by Waldensianism, but calling him a pre-peformer... Idk... The Reformation was very much a conservative and right wing movement (with the exception of Anabaptists). Can that be said for Savonarola? Maybe if we apply a medieval horseshoe theory...

Luther refused to change claiming to have to be true to his conscience. But when other theologians, Catholics and reformers refuted his ideas, and were also persecuted and also preferred to remain in their convictions for reasons of conscience, Luther did not respect them, it is more encouraged their persecution and deaths. Therefore, Luther, although highly relevant in that it is an opening to the doctrinal monopoly and because of the political repercussions of his reform, but not for that reason liberating, he was quite intolerant and defender of the stratified society.

Is predestination the reason why historically Protestant countries are so obsessed with motive? If being saved causes good works rather than the other way around, then you stop caring about actions and seek only to purity test. I'm no theologian but it seems to line up rather well.

A large portion of them were at least functionally illiterate, especially in the villages. (90% of the population was rural, and that's in the most developed parts of Europe)
