I disagree with Olimar having too little character development in 2. I just think a lot of it was written into the Piklopedia, rather than on the main story. I remember reading entries where Olimar would talk about his empathy for the pikmin when they were carrying freezing metal treasures in the Subterranean Complex, or his curiosity over the Pikmin's gibberish language right after he returns to the planet, and how he remembers what the days were like being stranded with only them on Earth. There were also a few talking about what life is like back on his home planet. I don't blame anyone for not seeing these because they're usually written into the notes on the more mundane or boring treasures, but I do think they deserve a little more attention. I enjoyed them.
@AquaLantern8 жыл бұрын
That was so annoying because the game gives *no* inclination to read the piklopedia and gives so little acknowledgement of it's existence that a ton of players (including me) have literally gone ENTIRE PLAYTHROUGHS without looking at it once. Why the hell would you relegate development of your *main characters* to journal entries that you actually have to go digging for?!? There's a reason the term "show don't tell" applies to games too.

I fell like Pikmin 2 improved so much over Pikmin 1 because the controls are better, the length is better and the presentation is outstanding, but I cannot deny it... This game is pure evil. There are just so many bad design choices in the levels themselves and everything ends up hassling you. However, despite that glaring flaw, I think that this is still better than the first. I feel it's a lot less stressful and to be honest, I don't care about Olimar as a character. He never stuck out to me despite the development he got, he just seemed a bit too generic for my tastes. I actually cared more about Louie and the President. So yeah, I can see your point of view, but there's mine for ya.

I have to say, and please don't get me wrong on this Emile, but what you said at 15:45 is only half right. I say this because Olimar DOES have character development in this game, but it only appears in the treasure hoard and somewhat in the piklopedia, but I will admit that the ship, the president, and maybe even Olimar's own son has slightly more character development in this game than Olimar.

Pikmin 3 is gorgeous. Pikmin 1 is exhilarating. Pikmin 2 is slow, there's no sense of danger, the enemies suck, the game is poorly designed, the hazards are cheap, there are no time limits, the a.i is idiotic at times, the cave aesthetics are pretty bland for the most part, and the bosses are constantly recycled. I think I know why enemies are a joke. There are SO many enemies that can cause friendly fire and in the First Game, you only have 3 types of Pikmin, and even though the Red's Attack multiplier gave increased damage, it wasn't enough to make major dents. While in this game, you have 2 new types of Pikmin. One a poisonous plant that would majorly hurt enemies when eaten, and a Sumo fighter that are much stronger than Reds, making fight much shorter. And the bosses, while you have potions and Purple Pikmin, you had none of that in the First Game. The Smoky Progg, DAMN was he hard. Uprooting Pikmin and poisoning them. Personally, this is my favorite out of the 3. It is the most challenging, Pikmin 1 just felt too easy, and it had little things like the way the whistle took a bit more time to actually summon the Pikmin. I didn't play P3: I watched Chugga's LP and while it seemed fun enough, it also looked too easy. Fruit gave you too much juice, there were no interesting features like the Piklopedia and Treasure Hoard's entries, and the pink pikmin were broken. Obviously, I love this game's Piklopedia and TH, the 2P mode is also fun and the overall difficulty level (although yes, some bosses are too easy).

I have been playing Pikmin 2 along with you, and while I loved Pikmin 2 a lot, and had tons of fun with it, it was REALLY frustrating in the latter half of the game. Starting at the Submerged Castle, the whole game became ruthless. I did tons of resetting after mass Pikmin genocide or having a few Pikmin die immediately after soawning. The random nature of the game, as well as having some really tough enemies and hazards made me like Pikmin 3 a bit more, since that game had enormous, gorgeous areas, HD visuals, clever bosses and enemies, and I felt more like a professional game than a hack.Still love Pikmin 2 and 3, can't wait to play the first one. :D

I dunno, pikmin 3 is pretty linear and the story is super formulaic, not to mention the game feels really scripted losing the freedom that the first 2 had.
@DarkestKNIGHTCJH12 жыл бұрын
Regarding the story, I think the development is just more clear cut in Pikmin 1 because like Samus, you're practically alone on a very very hostile planet and you're writing a journal to yourself which allows more elaboration from the point of view of Olimer. I suppose character development from the various entries but the bulk of the exposition now comes from a third party source(which is more impersonal imo) as opposed to directly from Olimer's writing towards his journal.

I've always been torn between which Pikmin game was the best of the main 3. On one hand, Pikmin 1 had a really interesting storyline, a captivating presentation and a really down to earth (literally) character that made the game feel real. Stakes felt high, the world felt incredibly foreboding to approach, and it's a game that has you on your toes all the way through. On the other hand, Pikmin 1 is still extremely rough around the edges plagued by frustrating Pikmin AI, game breaking glitches and bugs, and although I personally loved the 30 day time limit mechanic, I can definitely see that being a turn off for some players. Even though it's an excellent game in concept, it gets brought down heavily because of it's lack of polish and overabundance of bugs. You can sometimes lose upwards of 20 Pikmin when a large enemy like a Bulborb falls on top of them after being defeated, bum rushing enemies like Bulborbs and Bulbears can sometimes backfire because the Pikmin can't properly attack them if they're sleeping on uneven terrain, and Pikmin will often get stuck on objects while carrying spoils back to base. If these flaws were more ironed out, which we know could've been possible due to Pikmin 2's WAY higher polish in comparison, the game would've been a lot better, especially by today's standards. For Pikmin 2, on one hand it really innovated the formula. The Pikmin AI was MUCH more snappy and responsive, the world felt much more alive with so many new and interesting (albeit pretty easy) enemies to take down, and it's a MUCH larger game in scale when compared to the first. On the other hand, the game unfortunately feels very samey, the enemies are a joke because of how overpowered Purples are, and the whole 2 captains thing did not feel very fleshed out at all. There are very few times in this game where having 2 captains is 100% necessary, and the whole system felt more like a marketing gimmick than an actually well thought out mechanic. There's almost no point in splitting up the captain's Pikmin squads because you're just gonna need to walk back and forth to meet up anyway, so it ends up feeling extremely shoehorned and not pushed as far as it could've been. And lastly for Pikmin 3, on one hand the Pikmin are (usually) very smart this time around and make getting multiple tasks done in a timely manner feel great, the 3 captains mechanic is fleshed out WAY more in this game which allows for endless possibilities in planning and getting as much done as possible, and the game had some really entertaining characters to keep morale up all throughout. On the other hand, the game is (like the first game) way shorter than it should've been, didn't innovate the formula as much as the 2nd game did compared to the 1st, and even on max difficulty the game is still very easy. The enemies aren't as interesting in this game as they were in the 2nd game, fruit gives more than enough juice to win, and the plasm wraith chase can to be cheesed effortlessly if you know what you're doing. It may be the most polished and best feeling game in the series in terms of pure gameplay, but it lacks the same grit that the previous games had, often feeling a little too cheery and non-threatening unlike the other 2. Overall, I feel like Pikmin 3 is objectively the best Pikmin game just because of how great it feels to play, followed by Pikmin 2 being 2nd best because of how much it innovated, and finally Pikmin 1 simply because of how unpolished it is. But regardless of individual quality, I think the one thing we can all agree on is how incredibly special these games truly are. Nintendo has seriously out-done themselves with this series, and I have no doubt in my heart that Pikmin 4 will be just as great as well.

Honestly I find your critiques on Pikmin 3 very poignant. Personally Pikmin 3 is my favorite of the original trilogy and it's the one I always go back to, but I can see how someone who is more used to playing the first 2 games more might be turned off by how easy it is. Now, personally I was never really bothered by the difficulty or length, but then again I guess that was because I found the game incredibly fun and was more open to going back to it again and again. After 3 Deluxe came out, it is now the best Pikmin game imho. The difficuty options and multiplayer co-op finally put it a step above. But I much preferred Pikmin 2 to 1 back when this LP was made. Maybe it's because I tend to be a completionist, but I heavily dislike time restrictions as in 1. Shorter games in general tend to leave me feeling cheated out of the entry fee to play (60 bucks nowadays!) Plus, I much prefer a game that keeps things fresh on repeated playthroughs and gives rewards and/or helps track your completion progress. 2 was always better than 1 in my eyes, and 3 Deluxe is now my favorite.

So, I've been playing Pikmin 2 a bunch lately, and recently came back to this LP for help on some of the sections. I find Emile's thoughts on 2 very fascinating. This was back in 2011, 12 whole years ago! Back then we only had Pikmins 1 and 2. Even then I remember feeling so frustrated by Pikmin 2 after I finally got to play it on Wii's backwards compatibility and labelling it as inferior to Pikmin 1. Fast forward to 2023. We've have 2 new Pikmin games and an awkward spin-off and all the mainline Pikmin games are available on Switch. While this new playthrough on Switch has gotten me to ease up on Pikmin 2 at least a little bit, I still find it to be my least favorite of the Pikmin franchise, with 3 being to me the definitive Pikmin experience. (though we'll see how 4 stacks up once I finally play it, though the game does look promising and even if it doesn't beat 3 it'll definitely come in 2nd) The weird thing about it is... My roommate, who is one of my best friends that I love to hang out with, swears by Pikmin 2 as his favorite, and while I can't agree I do find his perspective interesting. I am curious what he's going to think of 4, since 4 takes a lot of elements from 2, but time will tell.

I've only played Pikmin 3, but I've now seen all of them almost fully. Pikmin 1 is the shortest, Pikmin 2 is the longest, and Pikmin 3 is in middleground (closer to Pikmin 1 than 2). I actually somewhat had the reverse story of yours. I had Pikmin 2 first and my dad and I were looking for Pikmin 1 for what felt like years, and during the time where I just had 1 and 2, I honestly looked at them as equals in terms of overall enjoyability. Pikmin 1 is definitely more fairly designed and feels more like you have a goal in mind, as well as being able to be played relatively quickly, but it's very glitchy in ways that add one of the worst types of difficulty and the pikmin AI is unresponsive and really frustrating at times. Pikmin 2 smooths out the control and glitch issues a lot and has a lot more content and I think more strategic possibility, but the level design towards the end of the game is very dickish and can be especially frustrating when you aren't especially practiced at playing the game strategically. Now that Pikmin 3 is out though... I think it just straight up outclasses Pikmin 1. I tried to play 1 again very recently and I just... couldn't. With another 30ish day pikmin game available with much more strategic possibility, smoother control, smarter and more responsive AI, and even better level design, I don't feel like there's a reason to play 1 anymore.

Personally, I think the first Pikmin game was the worst of the three (not counting rereleases). The time limit was alright, the mechanics were fun, the game looked visually appealing, but I feel like the game was held back by a lack of polish due to the game-breaking glitches, most notably the crushing glitch, which ends up killing Pikmin that shouldn't have been killed. But besides that, Pikmin 1 is still a great game. Pikmin 2 is better, but in my opinion, not by much. It fixed much of the glitches of the first game, they added more things such as dual captain play, new Pikmin, potions, a better challenge mode, 2-player co-op and battle, and dungeons, and they improved on existing ones, such as throw speed and a little bit on Pikmin AI. However, the game was held back by poor level design and balancing on difficulty. A level based on Bomb Rocks out of nowhere isn't good design, it's just throwing random explosions everywhere like a Michael Bay movie. Purple Pikmin on paper were a great idea; heavy hitters that can carry ten times more things than other Pikmin, but being slow. Here, they make it essential that they be used all the time from the moment you get them. Their homing ability dominates most enemies, and their power is ridiculous. Their slow running speed doesn't matter much, because you spend most of the game in dungeons, which have no time limit. Most of the enemies aren't fit to take Purple Pikmin on, making hazards your most dangerous adversaries, mostly explosions and electricity. I firmly believe that Pikmin 3 is the best main series Pikmin game. The trio captain play, how you can toss captains to places you can't reach normally, and getting captains to move to certain spots automatically gives way to so many cool puzzles and ideas. Extending your days by getting fruit back to the ship makes it imperative to collect fruit, although collecting fruit gives you too many days. The introduction of Rock and Winged Pikmin opened up so many cool things. The level design is among the series's best, the Pikmin are balanced so that all of them are relatively the same in utility, and the enemies legitimately test the player's ability to be a leader amongst your troops instead of losing Pikmin you shouldn't have or just relying on Purple Pikmin. Mission mode is so good, with more good design and the return of Purple and White Pikmin, with Purple Pikmin being reasonably nerfed to be on par with everyone else. The co-op is as great as ever, and the battle mode is alright. Overall, Pikmin 3 is the most balanced and overall most well designed Pikmin game out there. But this is just my opinion. That's what I have to say about the series.

I haven't played any Pikmin game myself (I'm just really uncomfortable playing games with time limits, even really generous ones), but I can definitely say I enjoyed your Pikmin 1 LP a lot more than this one. And I think the size of the game has been a huge influence on that. It seems like Pikmin 2 was trying really hard to be bigger than Pikmin 1, what with more types of Pikmin, bigger areas, more enemies, more treasures, dungeons, new mechanics like potions and traps... but rather than feeling like a more enriching experience, it just kinda felt like a slog to me. I mean, I started watching this LP again pretty much on a whim after, like, two or three years, and my enthusiasm was all gone by around episode 20. It's hard to put my finger on why, exactly, but I think I don't really find the combat in this series very entertaining. Pikmin 1's "boss" monsters were relatively few and far between, and most other enemies could be taken down pretty quickly. In Pikmin 2, there's at least one boss in like every dungeon, and most of the "battle" is spent waiting around for the boss to get into a vulnerable position. I don't like watching that, and I doubt I'd like playing it either, because there's no sense of progress when you're in that position.

+Megan Martin The day when chuggaa finally gets to Pikmin 3 (which may or may not be next), I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I feel as if Pikmin 3, while quite short and easy, felt a lot more like Pikmin 1, and it's very enjoyable to both watch and play.
@twiexcursori9 жыл бұрын
+Megan Martin I think I kinda agree. Pikmin 2 is just too big, too repetitive. Also, too much cheap difficulty (I mean, enemies that come back to life are ACCEPTABLE, but dropping enemies on you from the ceiling? Come on.)

I think Wii Pikmin 2 is still the superior game out of the 5 releases or so in the series. And plus I don't think Nintendo needed to give Olimar more character development since they gave him all the personality they can give him in the first game. Character development has its limits on how far you can go.
@shyguyshyster166610 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Its weird. Olimar's first game, he got a lot of character development, and we don't exactly need more, but we still don't know a lot of things about him.
@kingartemiz2xxx78610 жыл бұрын
Jynexo Gingell Maybe in Pikmin 4, they will expand his character more.
@Teinve10 жыл бұрын
At the rate of Olimar's removal of character development, I think he dies in Pikmin 4 ... And on that note, I think Pikmin 2 is good because instead of the development of Olimar, you get the character development of everything else--Louie, the emails, THE SHIP EVEN! I mean, I think it works out. Now, Pikmin 3? No. A lot less character development imo. Probably the worst out of the 3 in terms of that.
@shyguyshyster166610 жыл бұрын
That's not so farfetched. While its unlikely he dies in Pikmin 4, it's a good theory. It seems that every visit Olimar makes to the planet, it becomes more and more hostile. Its evolving. The short amount of time span of in between games still shows its evolving.Olimar seems to get more and more closer to his demise. Giant meteor, crash land on planet Possibly get trapped under the earth, with no one to find him. And be trapped by the Plasm Wraith constantly, it would never let him go. The creatures are becoming more aware of him. We don't know what exactly the Plasm Wraith is (however I have a theory on that the water and plasm wraiths are an alien species that have no function or goal but to see the extinction of the pikmin) Explains why Plasm Wraith and Water Wraith target the captains.

Jynexo Gingell For some reason, I feel like Nintendo has been secretly developing a Pikmin 4 ... I mean, Pikmin 3 had to be half as long as Pikmin 2 (just barely longer than the original Pikmin).

Naw, I like Pikmin 2 the best. The Wii controls for 1 aren't as good as the c-stick control, and ... The GC version for Pikmin 1 has that dumb time limit. I once went through the same experience Emile, but with a truly terrible game. I used to be a huge fan of the Bionicle series, and so I also got the 2003 Bionicle game for the PS2. As a kid I loved it, I liked being able to play as my favorite Toa fighting against the evil forces of Makuta. But I replayed it about a year ago and I felt something was wrong. I realized that the game wasn't nearly as good as I thought it was. The gameplay was gimmicky and glitchy, the voice acting and music were terrible, and the story made no sense whatsoever if you didn't see the movie that came out alongside of it (which, being a Bionicle fan, I of course had.) After reading online reviews of it (and the Tvtropes article on it) I realized other people felt the same way about it and some had even heralded it as an example of why liscensed games can suck.

I've had a similar thing happen to me with Final Fantasy IV that happened with Chugga here. I still like FF4 a lot, but for a while I thought it was my absolute favorite Final Fantasy game. Well, I've revisited that game in the past couple of months and I found the game to be a lot less "favorite choice" than I remembered it being when I played it in my younger years. Conversely, I've also replayed FF7 more recently and it turned out to be better than I thought it was way back when and is now probably my favorite in the series. Then again, I'm playing Final Fantasy XV right now, and I'm having a great time with that game. I may have to rethink my rankings for the series again in the near future.

I played both Pikmin 1 and 2 for the Wii one Christmas after having seen your LP of Pikmin 3. I watched some episodes of the previous games to see what I had in store, and I liked what I saw. So, I played the games, and oh my god, the difficulty threw a curveball at me. I had no idea the games were that hard. The second one in particular. The first one is fine, though the Bulborbs were too powerful, but the second one pulled tons and tons of bulls***. With the randomly generated caves, you could get stuff like a Firey and Watery Blowhog in the same place. The game's bosses were okay, it's just that most of the time, you were waiting for the boss to stop attacking so you could attack. They turned out to be pretty challenging as well. For me, it felt like I couldn't play any part of the game without losing at least 20 Pikmin. It was so frustrating, seeing the results screen, with nothing accomplished, and watching the results say I was just losing more and more Pikmin. So much that I would do entire days dedicated to sprouting more Pikmin again so I could have a chance. And the aiming, holy goodness, it sucks in these games. I don't know if my Pikmin aren't going the way I want them to. The AI is also stupid. They get stuck on stuff all the time, and they take a long time to realize that I am spamming the whistle button to get them out of the way of an enemy. And the next thing I know, they are dead, and that gets saved onto permanent records that shows how bad I was. And when you'd clear the debt, the game would show how many Pikmin died and how they did. The game was just saying in a mocking tone "Here's the Pikmin that you caused to die for literally trying to make progress in this game!" A year and a half later, I got Pikmin 3. Because at the time I got the other games, I didn't have a Wii U. Anyway, I played it up until the Vehemoth Phosbat, and some of the frustration was still there, but it felt like aiming and battling was much easier. I stopped playing until a few days ago, where just yesterday, I made it past the boss. With little effort, I must say. I also must say, it felt so good to play a Pikmin game that felt fair and was actually enjoyable. Pikmin 3 fixes so many problems I had with the previous two games. The game warns you about sunset earlier. The aiming isn't a pile of garbage. Mission Mode is somewhat fun unlike P2's Challenge Mode. P1's is still good, though. The boss fights are intense and awesome, and so far, I actually struggled on the Armored Mawdad more than the bosses I've seen so far, which is only 2. Including the Mawdad. Anyway, Pikmin 3 is, in my opinion, the absolute definitive Pikmin experience. They even have comedy in the game! More than Pikmin 2, in fact. Stuff like the caves are a cool idea, and I kind of wish they were in P3, but I do love time limits for some reason. Anyway, yeah.

In the file select screen of the Wii version, you can press the - and + buttons to revert to a previous day/save. It really adds to the replay value, since you don't have to start over on a new file every time you want to replay a certain part of the game, whether it's just for fun or to improve your score.

Dude, I had the exact same feeling about Hey You Pikachu. About a year ago I was feeling nostalgic for the 64 and games I had donated to charity, so I bought a new system online and bought most of the games I donated. Hey You Pikachu was basically my life for a couple of months when I was... 7? I LOVED that game. Playing it now is really disappointing. The controls are terrible, the "missions" you get are almost impossible to complete, and pikachu never freaking listens. Childhood nostalgia is real man. It's really real.

Pikmin 2 is like a biology lesson, and an excellent one at that. It is quite likely that kingdoms of nature will come together in the future. The use of biology just makes this game seem much more real than others, and the enemies, though silly sometimes, are fundamentally brilliant in their design.

Re-watching this LP about...twelve years after it was being uploaded, and got to the point about Chugga's feelings on the game. I have to say I agree; not just about Olimar but about the tone of the game as a whole. Pikmin 1 had a surprisingly somber tone, given the whole premise was Olimar crashing down on an unknown planet, alone, with a destroyed ship, no way to call for help, and with a limited supply of breathable air ran out. And with the planet being unknown to him at the time, there was this alien feel to the whole thing. This game's story? It's lighter, but not necessarily in a good way. It's all just one big joke. Hahah you're going back to the planet because SPACE BUNNIES. Hahah the company's indebted to the ALL DEVOURING BLACK HOLE LOAN SHARKS. Hahah your ship talks and has snarky commentary about literally everything. There's little in the way of quiet introspective moments or moments where s-argh- hits the f-argh-ing fan and is taken seriously. And as a result of this complete tonal 180, it doesn't feel like there's anything actually at stake here, and with it a reason to really care about what's going on beyond its effect on the gameplay. It also hasn't really felt like the series has really matched the original's tone for me since, with both Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4 having released since then and both of them both being on the lighter end of things (4 especially annihilates the whole 'being trapped on an alien planet' feel by having a safe home base that gets more and more people in it as the game goes on). That being said, I feel like 3 and 4 take themselves at least a little more seriously than 2 does, or at least don't treat literally everything as a joke.

One thing you overlooked on the character development, Chugga, is that Olimar's journal in this game is in the Piklopedia. Many of his thoughts and opinions are expressed in his notes for every item. The reason he isn't talking about his experience with the pikmin is because he has already accustomed to his role as a leader, and the learning experience throughout this trip is the items and enemies. There's plenty of character development in both games.
@MnMsicecream12 жыл бұрын
Out of the two LP's Chuggaa has done of Pikmin I would say that this one is superior. The game is much longer and more in depth and actually has more character development with the cut scenes and letters at the end of the days. The areas are prettier and much more thought out and I love the dungeons. Pikmin 1 doesn't interest me as much as Pikmin 2 does and I like the randomness of the game as it means you can't get lazy and always have to be aware whilst playing. This is the best one!
