Here's a story. In Pikmin 2, when I went into the caves, I would punch every punchable thing to death just so my Pikmin wouldn't risk dying. And if a single one died, I'd restart to my last save. I managed to complete Pikmin 2 with no deaths as a child.

I can't listen to this without being in tears. The meaning of the lyrics alone, the meaning it takes within the game world, what it meant for its developers, it's just too much ;_; It's about living your life as much as you can, gathering together to play as one, falling in love - both romantically and as a whole - all the while knowing we will all die and disappear in the end, but we will still stay loyal to the whole forever, all having fun while we're alive. It's no wonder the CD itself sold more than 0.6M copies in Japan, just by being in the few TV commercials for the game: it wasn't even in the game, yet it touched people's hearts and resonated so much with the spirit of the nation that it became a real hit. Coming from a virtual band of secret performers (no identities have been found afaik), it's really something unique in this world.

Pikmin is a really heartbreaking game when you think about it. It looks all cutesy but it's really dark. I mean, compared to other Nintendo games... heck, even other video games in general, it probably has the highest death count ever. Not just of enemies, but of the actual player. When you think about it, the Pikmin are essentially an extension of the captains. What I find the worst thing though, is that, in other video games your character dies and you just respawn right? I mean, the same can sort of be said for the Pikmin games as the captains, but those Pikmin... oh... when they die, they are dead. There is no respawn for a Pikmin. You can sprout as many as you'd like and it wouldn't make a difference in terms of numbers, but the individual Pikmin is literally just gone. But you know what the most disturbing piece of Pikmin media is? Not the games. For me, it's the Pikmin movies, especially the construction site one. In the games, you don't see it that close up, but in that movie, when the Bulborb eats the Pikmin - holy crap - that is disturbing. You see the final expression on their faces, and the remains that fall out of the Bulborb's mouth, and you see them running for dear life because Olimar is too far to help them fight. Now THAT is tough to watch. Couple that with this song, and Pikmin is a horribly disturbing game.

I played the first two games and the song made me very sad. I haven't even watched the movies but I've heard they are brutal. The Pikmins' enemies are bad enough but then you learn that Olimar doesn't exactly try to minimize Pikmin deaths. The game makes it difficult and materially unrewarding to spare Pikmin lives but will show you their weak, hollow eyed ghosts leaving this world. You can't really call the enemies evil, they are simply trying to survive, and so is Olimar. The crux of the series is just the horror of nature as well as the idea that not everything is evil but it may very well be horrifying

I was very determined to keep them from dying and worked out that if I scatter bomb carriers around the perimeter before the battle starts, I could call them back one at a time as it was about to slurp and it would just slurp on the bomb the yellow leaves behind.

@@AnimalPuff Oh sure, but I'd always found the timing on that to be way harder (plus it was too annoying to pick out the bomb-carriers in my group during battle, since the original game didn't let you swap colors). I'm kind of sad the newer versions made my preferred strategy impossible, even if those finicky bomb commands were also the cause of like a million unintentional accidents when I was starting out.
