Thanks for the coverage of the Corn Bowl in LaPorte that aerial view really puts it in perspective as to how large they are. In fact it looks like they have the framework up for a second one just across the road. They have that look as if they are a large football field but especially a hockey rink. I wouldn't be surprised if that if that ramp under the trailer also has a scale built into it to keep track of the tonnage. There's a firm that advertises them almost every week on the agricultural summary TV show. Also just watching how fast that corn flows out of the trailer is a sad reminder of how many farmers and elevator workers suffocate every year when they get trapped . They still have the lengthy task of laying out and tucking in the tarps and then you'll start hearing the hum of all the blowers trying to keep the moisture level in check. Alas every time you handle this grain it costs money but there was good news that Mexico just bought a substantial amount of corn from the US. Hopefully the rail system can keep up with the volume going there unlike 2 months ago where they had embargoes in place. Thanks for keeping us appraised of the Harvest progress
@redsiowatrainvideos664529 күн бұрын
@paulbergen9114 You're welcome Paul! I believe a lot of farmers wear safety harnesses now when going into elevators. I would guess the corn on the ground would be the first to go. Sounds like the CPKC will be busy with a lot of corn going to Mexico. I'd say the harvest is 90 percent done. Dry conditions sure did help for that plus less drying needed for corn👍

@paulsmith539829 күн бұрын
@redsiowatrainvideos6645 a few years ago, i had a crew transport job. It overlapped coal and grain. The coal was straightforward, but the grain was interesting, and more involved, as there were very different methods of storage. Like the coal, grain elevators were easy, but one area had outdoor storage with a large circle of track, and a stationary loading conveyor. They would pull the empty train in on the circular track, put the engines in granny low, and load 'em up. It was a really slick operation to say the least!

Storing corn for over a year is another example of a supply chain that incurs additional costs , while the farmer doesn't get paid ( and pays for extended storage ). Brazil, Russia are relatively newer exporters of corn to China , so the US dollar and the US farmer are suppliers of last resort.
@danlowe868421 күн бұрын
I believe the excess corn is simply due to ethanol production. As I read years ago from a person smarter than myself (I don't recall identity), "Never grow food for fuel."
@rocket835111 күн бұрын
@@danlowe8684 Until Ethanol there was massive surpluses of corn in the US. The excess corn this year is the result of a record harvest. The piles on the ground are the result of bins being more expensive, its cheaper in cold climates to pile what will be gone by spring on the ground under a tarp than to build a bin that will only be full for 2 months a year.
@ryanmcgowan46765 күн бұрын
That's a load of crap, it was a good year for corn, How do I know? I work at a grain elevator in Iowa.. We had guys bringing in over 375 bushels an acre.. and thats just in one facility... Multiply that by the entire state of Iowa, better yet, the entire 8 state corn belt region
@ryanmcgowan46765 күн бұрын
The major processing facilities shut down all incoming grian, rail and truck, because they filled, and that's both ethanol and food grade processing. So to play that diverting corn for fuel instead of food will cause food shortages argument doesn't hold any water in this neck of flyover country.
