So a lot of people are confused when Godfrey does this. When Godfrey kills his lion, he in turn kills the humanity he once had. Turning him into Hoarah Loux. It’s an alter Ego by the looks of it, most likely resembling his savage and primal nature at heart. His lion was the thing keeping him at bay from hulking out, when he realized this he knew what he had to do. And he actually shows some genuine pain by the looks of it when he does it too

Actually this is kinda reversed; Godfrey is the Alter-ego. Marika needed to choose a husband who could manage territorial conflict while she did ~god things~ so she chose hoarah loux, the undefeated warrior, on the condition that he bind himself to Serosh, who would in turn rein in his insatiable lust for blood and allow himself to conduct himself as a king would. "I've given thee courtesy enough" isnt just a kickass line, its him stating that he's no longer gonna have the common courtesy to fight in a regal and clean manner; he's gonna fight tooth and nail like the warrior he always has been

The lion is the physical manifestation of he’s bloodlust and battle rage. When he become Elden lord, he changed his name to Godfrey and locked away he’s warrior spirit into Serosh.
