It's a very good game and Obsidian definitely tried to cover everything....but it feels like it just needed an extra "push" in either direction to make it great...better enemy AI, more colorful companions with better interaction, stronger antagonist's presence, more depth to stronghold etc. Still, their best game probably and this time Obsidian will finally get a chance to make a sequel of their own.

Is all the dialog so formal? For instance in baldurs gate, you had people talking as if they were actual farmers and shit. The dialog in watching your video seems like everyone talks so formal. Is there any kind of dialog like this: "Let's see what yer guts be lookin' like!" "Aye, now this be more like it! The first t' disobey me orders gets an axe in their skull."

I started playing Divinity Original Sin a a few days ago , and it is basically my introduction to this category of games. CRPGs. I really like your reviews. To me , a fan of a certain type of games is the most qualified reviewer, and you do a great job. I'm eagerly waiting to experience some more similar games once I'm done with DOS, and PoE has grabbed my attention thanks to its amazing visual style.(imo at least)

Loved the 'D&D' games of yore like Baldurs Gate. Not sure how I'd feel about trying one now though having been 'spoiled' by modern Dragon Age & Elder Scrolls games. May have to check a few LP's. :)

+Jimboola To those feeling the same way, I never played a top-down RPG until recently. I still haven't played another infinity engine game. Even though I love games like Skyrim, Fallout 3/NV/4, and Mass Effect, I am LOVING Pillars of Eternity. Should i get this, tyranny or divinity original sin?
@jakobfel25 жыл бұрын
Very late comment but my vote would be for Pillars of Eternity all the way. I haven't played the first one (yet) but the second one is literally the greatest narrative-based RPG I've ever played. Only Bethesda's games top it. Tyranny is a very solid game but lacks a lot of the greatness of PoE and from what I've heard, it's quite short. As for Divinity: Original Sin, it's a fun game but I feel like people overrate the series quite a bit. It's much more light-hearted, it has turn-based combat (I hate turn-based combat) and just doesn't feel nearly as polished and epic as PoE. I mean, for what it tries to do, it does it well, but I much prefer the serious tone, world building and general gameplay experience of the PoE games by a LONG shot. If you can, get all three but if you can only get one, I'd say get PoE first!

@haasgaming10 жыл бұрын
Drezzek01 Great to hear they've been useful! D:OS was very surprising at the time and contained some great combat. Combat here is of course not turn based, as you can see in the review it is real time + pause and some people might not like that style of combat and prefer the turn-based mechanics of D:OS, but otherwise it contains fantastic writing and story (something D:OS did lack). For me, I enjoyed them both but definitely think PoE is a lot better.

I heard, read, etc.. this game clocks in around 80 hours? So is that for the standard edition or complete? Thanks.
@haasgaming7 жыл бұрын
The standard edition has about 40 hours of main story content. Perhaps if you complete everything it gets close to 80, it's been a while so I'm not quite certain, but it's certainly possible. The complete edition adds the White March expansions which each feature around 10 hours of story content (+ a couple of more hours with every side thing done) each.

pillars of eternity imaginary qualities. While I can say for sure that pillars of eternity 2 deadfire is expanding the first game in every level. Graphics gameplay character design world build etc etc it doesn't have the same nostalgia feeling as the first one. Of course one can argue that the first is build to be the next Boulder's gate re creation in 2015 with the same game elements and world design and difficulty. but what makes the first game special is as I already said the feeling of 1999 games in modern time more than that the game has design of pause and think tactic which is rare in games with this nature. It's an isematric rpg who you really need to think deep about combat desition. the amazing art beauty that combine the old and the new works so well not to mention the architecture Of semi middle ages style and it all goes so well with the game would build. in a strategic point of view Poe 1 makes sense very much with support roles characters that can give boost of resistance endurance on so on it's very much fun to keep the wizard behind and make a warrior stronger and beat the enemies while using the wizard 's own Magic's. in the heart of Poe 1 there's a great thought about philosophy and spiritually what are dreams ? is one egsaple while the main character is a watcher who can read others souls give the game his inpact on questions human ask in the real world. what if we could do that for real? what are the outcomes of that unique ability mean for the understanding life it self? Poe 1 isn't just another rpg it has depth .that is rare to see the world always create new ways to carrest you as a player like the felling of having a castle who you need to get buisness working and the influence on the world and your companions with the choices the do in the castle makes you feel like it's actual fun work. this is of course just one of many imaginative qualities the game has. also the combat is very complicated and fun in the same time learning from your own mistaks reposition your specific character like warrior in flanking position with a strength potion and a magic support from the wizard carrest you to go on and on with more possibilities the game offers in every new quest.

Just started playing (on Game Pass). I love this game. I'm enjoying it but there are some things that feel like this was made in 1999. The static map, the janky here-and-there voice overs. You can barely tell which character you have selected during a fight. Which leads to the pausing. It throws the experience off. Even when you want the entire fight to play out, it still pauses. (Imagine trying to watch a movie just to have someone keep pausing it on you, yeah, welcome to PoE). Finally, every fight plays out the same. Trigger an enemy and everyone rushes to the center in one big dog pile. Which makes certain AoE spells useless.

That's exactly it. The original Infinity Engine games were based on the second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ruleset, which are by now of course horribly outdated. With Pillars they very much kept that concept in mind and have created a much more modern version of many of those mechanics.

I HATED the attributes, and I hated the magic casting from the spells to the fact you cant buff pre combat. In the end I wasnt pulled in enough to even finish this game. @haasgaming7 жыл бұрын
Except I mentioned quite a few negatives? Considering this was a launch review, certainly after playing it for many weeks after that as well I can think of a few more points - although I don't think they're all that crucial personally - like how the stronghold was really disappointing and how the first expansion, White March Part 1 was somewhat of a letdown but that doesn't take away from the fact that, even though this is one of my favourite games in years, I think I certainly mentioned quite a number of flaws when it came out.

Is is only me or something is wrong with the combat in this game? Everything seems to be fine in theory, but in practice I feel that every combat encounter is repetitive and the same. Additionally there are plenty of those combat encounters and you cannot talk it through out of combat in most cases, therefore making combat boring and irritating in the long run.
@cracmar037 жыл бұрын
You surely speak about PoE ? Not about Dragon Age Origins ? And I am not trying to be mean. I am quite surprised. Those are exacly things which I say about DA O combat. Boring, repetative, highly annoying ... well you didn't mention op magic (PoE has it just like Origins) or annoying one animation of attack (Origins problem). However I had no problem with combat. Except for boss fights which demanded better tactics from me.
