the "metaphysical coating" is my favorite part of Eora, and how well it "trickles down" into interesting and diverse social and cultural ramifications. it's truly a higher category of worldbuilding that shows off Sawyer's unique combination of TTRPG experience, academic knowledge of History, and personal political beliefs. That being the case I'm honestly excited for any kind of gameplay to occur in that world as long as it carries the "Obsidian guarantee" of "you can meaningfully engage with the lore" while playing.
@limitbreaknet3 ай бұрын
Well said. And yeah. It’s something Sawyer is clearly passionate about!
@rknowling3 ай бұрын
For me the metaphysics is the core, and I do everything I can to ignore the combat distractions. I play exclusively for lore, story, metaphysical questions that make me think!

Josh, Obsidian's take on a Japanese style Tactics game set the POE universe is a day 1 buy. Or even a Heroes of Might and Magic style with an amazing story and tons of customization would definitely get my money.

There's a quite a few ways this could be done. Blackguards for instance did away with exploration and mostly only had the combat encounters and static town screens. It still had a decent story, nice visuals and music. Mechanicus is similar in structure, but even more boiled down to the essentials. Icewind Dale did still have the maps to explore while also being quite linear overall. Only the latter - similarly as Storm of Zehir - lets the player build the party themselves, though Mechanicus' party characters didn't actually have any character and can be built freely, so the result there was similar.

I’m here for it. Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, another Fallout, etc. Keep bringing it. I’m here for it all, though I sincerely hope Obsidian has a few isometric CRPGs left in them. Love the genre and they killed it with POE/POE2.

I love Josh Sawyer's work, and hope he looks after himself! ❤ PoE1 had a great story and a fascinating central moral dilemma. I felt that the framing story of PoE2 slipped, and then the "we love combat" crew distracted the devs from good storytelling. (Starting out by destroying all we had built in PoE1 made me really sad!) Hopefully Avowed and then PoE3 have better storytelling with more compelling central philosophical/ moral themes. After all, it was BG1 that taught me to love philosophy in storytelling hehe

I've never played Expeditions: Rome (which is a kind of tRPG/cRPG mix, from what I hear), but I've seen some stuff on it, and am interested to give it a try. I wonder if a Pillars tactics game could end up looking a little something like that? Or if they would just go full tactics, to break further away from the deep rpg elements.

PoE 3 would be so awesome, not sure theyll have the liberty or motivation to do it under MS though. Which would be a shame. Image PoE3 with BG3 fidelity and voice acting!

My impression is that Microsoft allows their studios total liberty in the projects they choose to create. If anything, the underperformance of first party titles this generation is due to Phil Spencer being too hands off.

I'm almost certain Sawyer did say they would def make PoE3 if MS gave "BG3 money" for it. EDIT: ...and it was mentioned in this. That's what you get when you comment before you've watched the video completely.

This guy Josh uptalks, has an annoying demeanor.. and I can't say I think he has done anything Genius.. but man: It is so obvious he has great work ethics.. I can taste his methodology playing PoE , if that makes sense, and he talks like someone who gets things done, right Even impossible things like PoE. I learned some stuff by listening to his interviews, specially the behind the scenes work which I highly recommend

Pillars Tactics ? Feels like a downgrade from Pillars 1 and 2. RTWP is not tactics ? All tactical games feels the same.
@aliens414313 күн бұрын
I think that's true. There is a populist, d*ck-waving legend that the more hardcore, pure and hard a tactical (or really whatever) game is, simply the better it is. But the truth is, they simply become all the same, but not only that, they almost cease to become games, and become pure routines, methods and practices and pure hard-bitten attitude. Gone is the game, and all there is, is nothing but buttons, timings, learning it all by heart, often arbitrary fake-rules that are pure extra. (E.g. some games in the past require lots of saves and doing rounds differently again, as part of the - still bad - design [unless one wants 1000 factors of arbitrariness repeated all again], but since 15 years or so, due to a single Japanese game, that's partly forbidden too.) I've just been on 1-2 weeks of Heroes of Might and Magic 3, and what an overrated, "reddity"* mess of near worthlessness this is. I'm just trying to finish the first mission (although the campaigns seem in wrong order!), to forever disrespect this irrationally overhyped relic of less than mediocrity. *Reddity refers to the mindless "yes-men" attitude of its fake legend of "addictiveness" and "adventure" that is in fact a misconstruction based on ignorant 11 year olds when they played the demo in 1999... Without reddity conformity, there is nothing to confirm this in a purely factual way. The game requires ludicrous exactitude - not perfection! But arbitrarily doing missions "exactly only one way!", even if naturally there 500 ways (and 489 may be super-logical)... The legend of addictiness presupposes that at least 50 or so ways would be viable. This is not so. Even though the gameplay itself provides zero logic otherwise for why this should be so. That is typical shi**y old mission design (I also noticed in Battlezone 1, coincidentally), there is nothing magic about it. I even know this from ancient old attempts with editors myself, it is basically lack of playtesting and actual respect for the player... (If you ever make a mission... you will possibly do this mistake by default, that's all.) It is objectively bad, by their own and general standards. It is just in more recent years that such stuff has become glorified, partly due to reddit-conformity and other superstition. But that is just an aside to how there is nothing fun, atmospheric of "gamey" about it. This kind of stuff is some of the most primitive of human activities (save for online discussions, lmao). Or even something like Ace Combat 7... I think such design is more naturally part of Japanese games due to the culture, but no matter. In this game one may weasel through most missions, but they will make one feel miserable nonetheless, and to avoid that one needs a certain perfection of all moves and timings. And while the pure feeling of being in such a fighter jet combat sim (with mixtures of futurism and traditionalism) may seem "awesome", it just gets ruined and disappears entirely once one needs to focus on the perfect execution and doing each step right... Again and again. Basically a simple principle to understand, but hardly anybody ever mentions it or talks about it honestly. (Even though an unexpected alternative might blow everyone's minds.)
