I've spent the last 25 years on the water, and I'd never seen a boat that can handle that kind of sea that easily. Great job of steering, of course, but that's one seriously impressive boat.

Thanks for posting this video. I've often wondered what it would be like to be on such a small boat in such big waves, and this provides about the most movement one can get in a boat big enough to carry a useful load. That's a tough little boat, which would make it a total blast to play with in such heavy surf, as long as you did not have to actually do anything, like rescue someone, requiring going out into that weather. Now, THAT would be hair-raising.

What a vessel, in 47 years at sea I've seen pilot vessels in very heavy seas many times, she is a credit to her builders and the person that was handling her in those conditions.Difficult to estimate the wave height from the video but 8 metres could be an over estimate

Great job by the operator of the Pilot boat did a remarkable job of not plowing the bow under when dropping off the top of waves. Excellent control of speed enough to get over waves then pull back to keep from sticking the bow in the through. He rarely missed any about as good as anyone could do

A really nice educational video on how boats react to waves. Now I understand why heaving to has always historically been an effective sailing vessel tactic, you can see that if he charges head on to the waves the keel slams hard against the water and rattles the whole thing, while taking a heaving-to angle to the wave makes the boat roll off them smoothly. Seeing how stable that boat was, I think the commander was just having fun, it's educational because you can see how the boat takes different angles.

@claysurfer78 All this of course depends on which of the Great Lakes your talking about. for instance on Lake Erie it is not the size of the waves rather its the frequency of them. Very violent storms. Lake Erie is shallow when compared to other lakes, only about 210ft deep. The " Big Lake they call Gitche Gumee", now thats a different story. Until you actually experience horrible storms on these lakes Its difficult to understand. After seven years of service on Lake Erie, I have great respect

this was a demo for boat builder. a good one too. as a boat operator myself I see it was a relatively benign event. boat under control at all times. not taking green water over the bow really. many pilot boats transit rough seas close to shore before reaching calmer seas beyond. where the ships are running. good advertisement.

These are some GREAT built boats- will NEVER let you sink if all openings are sealed and they have a distress system JUST in case it does not recover from right side up (highly unlikely) but things do happen. These boats have FULL scuba equipment onboard to keep the crew alive in extreme cases until help arrives if needed?

@dlbuffmovie. Unfortunally due to the conditions- 60kts of wind and driving rain 50% of the footage was unusable due to camera shake, loss of focus, rain on lens etc so all I could do was piece together the best sections where the footage was clear. Taking video in these conditions is not easy.

@TheMorenita2010 This boat isn't for fishing or lobsters. It takes harbor pilots to inbound ships so they can be navigated into the inland waters safely. Conversely, it goes and takes the pilot off the outbound ships when the ship has reached the open ocean. Those trips are made, night and day, good weather and bad...

and93hil Agreed. Force 8. Bad enough! People fool themselves. A big swell does not mean a storm, which is wind force. Often there is a big swell from a storm 3 days ago 500 miles away. Couple this to a local Force 8 wind and a good soundtrack and wow, we have Force 10. It's also two videos - one out at sea and the other in shelving water entering a port or river. But it's a well-filmed promotional video. Hope they sell plenty!
