This was my very first pen with a gold nib. And mine is extra fine, and it is one of the smoothest writing pens I own. It works better than some of my more expensive gold nibbed pens. Mine is from Japan.

I have four of these, 2 vintage and 2 new. The new ones are in EF and in medium. They are known for being wet writers and the nibs are broader than regular japanese nibs. My medium is the smootest writer of all my fountain pens and i love it! The EF i have is very scratchy, even more scratchy than a Pilot metropolitan fine. But i love the pens for in my planners and the medium is my favorite of all my gold nibbed pens. And its a pen that goes the distance because my vintage Pilot Elites from the 70s are still great and exactly the same as the ones you can buy new (except the form of the nib inlay). Congrats on your Pilot! I am always recommending people to try this fun little pen but also warning about the risk it will become their favorite :-)

Hello from a fellow lefty and lover of Pilot pens. Japanese pens sold at US domestic sellers have to be imported, which adds cost from import fees and bulk shipping. Buying from Japan is commonly called buying "grey market". The Pilot 912 I bought from a Japanese store on Ebay for $135 is...$280 at domestic stores like Goulet and Jetpens. Some people have qualms with bypassing US sellers...which I understand but a 100% markup for the same product is...too much for me.

I was confused why it cost $54 more at US retailers than on Amazon. I prefer the pen to say “Elite” on it.

Thanks for the review! This is the top pen on my wish list. I appreciate the information on the different version. I haven't decided as yet whether to buy an EF or an F nib.

I think if you write smaller you will love the EF. It’s very pleasant :)

Thank you for expalining that this is the Japanese version. I was going crazy thinking i brought a knockoff on Amazon. I just on the blk in F. The box in came in and lack of converter leads me to think knockoff. But then its a 14K nib. I like thr wording Elite spelled out. Looks more classy then E. BTW converter for it is con-40

It’s a Tomoe River notebook inside a Galen leather cover. The cover is wonderful! The notebook is okay. Not my favourite.
