The pilots of Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303 made a series of unforgivable and insane mistakes that resulted in the aircraft landing gear up and bouncing down the runway before they decided to takeoff again! This is the story of the insane mistakes and the truth about this airline!
Note: I had to remove ALL of the crash video footage and images from this video in order to comply with KZbin's overly restrictive monetization policy. For some reason the footage of this crash is deemed to be more sensitive and not suitable for educational purposes.

Although I focus more on the Captain in this video, the First Officer is also responsible and had a duty to speak up and take control of the aircraft. Unfortunately perhaps the culture contributed to his unwillingness to do so. Also, note: I had to remove every image (and video footage) of the crash and wreckage in order to comply with KZbin's monetization policy. Thankfully the lessons we can learn from this are still just as valid.

Culture could certainly be a factor but it’s not possible to really generalize. Interesting observation though that one’s culture may not be well adapted for dealing with every circumstance, and that is a lesson we should all probably keep in mind lest we become complacent about how our own cultural attitudes and tendencies can cause problems in certain situations.

The investigation found that 150 of the 434 pilots employed by PIA had bogus or suspicious licenses and were suspended indefinitely. Also interesting is that USA and UK both banned PIA from landing in their country. That's pretty crazy to think.

yeah i flew LHR - LGTS (london - Thessalonica) on Olympic airlines in '99 half the seats missing, people with crates of chickens trying to board, one guy arguing at check in that he was most surely taking a car door on as hand luggage, and everyone smoking as we took off.. this was during the kosovo war, and all but one runway at Thessalonica were reserved for UN warplanes. normal approach in peacetime was from the south, however we were diverted due to the high prevalence of UN planes in the airspace, and were on approach from the north, almost had a hard over when the captain realising we were on the wrong approach disengaged the autopilot and took manual control, we dropped 10,000ft so fast and broke through low cloud cover just levelling off below it....literally at 400 feet i could see a gas station out of the window, and clearly see the people walking around on the ground (night time but well lit) while we dropped nose to the ground, everyone was in complete and pensive silence, when we broke through the cloud, everyone clapped and cheered. i took a Lufthansa back via Frankfurt lol. Olympic ceased flying in 2009, now before i flew i checked them out and they had actually won several safety awards... go figure, our landing approach was lucky not to turn into a trajectory, but it shows that safety awards are only valid for the day they are awarded.

Amazing video!! Another factor to this crash which was not mentioned in the video may have been the fact that the pilot and co-pilot were observing Ramadan by fasting while flying the plane. While fasting/hypoglycemia may not have caused the crash, it may definitely have contributed to fatigue and pilot error leading to some very bad decisions being made. After the crash PIA apparently put out a circular stating that flying pilots were no longer allowed to fast while flying.

Hoover, love the direct, concise information you provide. Brings back bad memories of PIA flight 268 that crashed with no survivors on approach to Kathmandu in September 1992. I was flying with two work mates Jim and John on that flight from Heathrow. 20 minutes before boarding I heard my name over the PA. It was the office cancelling my flight due to some work issue. The two lads and 165 others left on that flight... The very next day I flew with PIA to Kathmandu to help sort out the aftermath. To say I was apprehensive is probably an understatement...! I remember seeing the wreckage from above. Often wonder why the pilots of 268 made such a mistake. Perhaps your insights explain why. Keep up the great work. All the best.

Upon hearing that, the FO immediately realised, they belly landed because he forgot to voice he had retracted the landing gear to prepare for go-around. 8. not wanting to commit the same mistake he lowers the landing gear too early, while both engines are down and they're barely being kept in the air by the tail engine.... meanwhile CPT pushing down, while FO pulling up cancels each other's input

Want really counts is putting your brain well ahead of where the aircraft will be pointed. One Thanksgiving he told us some amazing stories, but also an admonition: DO NOT FLY on commercial Carriers based South of the US Border, or from 3rd World Countries. Primary Reasons: Inadequate funding for parts, maintenance and pilot training. He gave specific examples. For instance, entering a Mexicana DC-10 to meet up with a colleague pilot. He sat in right seat and reviewed the Log Book while waiting for his friend to exit the Lav. He said he saw that the DC-10 was flying with several critical systems, including hydraulics, that were non-op and running on stand-by source. Several instruments were also down on one side. He said that pilots from some countries look at every successful flight as a case of ‘cheating death’. If you knew your flight crews thought like that, would you step foot in their aircraft?

My dad used to drive the catering trucks to unload food, drinks, and carts from the inbound flight and load fresh food, drinks etc for the outbound flight, in the mid 90s to early 2000s. My dad would routinely find insects on food and in food carts, which would require fumigation. And strong smells of urine and faeces that awaited him as the cabin door opened! Then came the partial ban of PIA flying in EU airspace due to safety and maintenance standards, followed by issues with the authenticity of pilots licenses (as mentioned in the video). And now, causing the death of passengers due to bad flight management, poor communication, stubbornness, or of the above? Personally, I'd rather walk than risk my health and life on a PIA flight.

Mentor us mote detailed for pilots in training and enthusiasts or maybe journalist writing a detailed story or families in legal proceedings. I find " pilot debrief " better for lay people like me as its shorter and focusing very determined on the important points explained the reasons why . Good for Amy technical professiosn to learn preventing incidents in other professional environments.

I bet the captain was one of the PIA pilots with bogus credentials. Disregarding ATC commands (in an effort to save him from disaster) and then bragging how amazed ATC will be with his piloting skills is insane arrogance. It’s so sad for the surviving family members of the 90+ passengers that their loved ones died in such a preventable tragedy. R.I.P.

@@sarahalbers5555Indeed. The first psychological assessment deemed him unfit to be an airline pilot. His reaction was to try and get a second opinion-of five “second opinions.” He managed to get a “yes” from some of them but the rules changed to disallow second opinions. So then he appealed to the Pakistani Ombudsman equivalent and they then eventually cleared him to start airline pilot training. Naturally he had his problems during training and his career but somehow managed to make it to captain and keep his job despite the glaring flaws. I honestly don’t know how he managed it. I’d guess maybe he had wealth or family connections in combination with the fact that generally Airbus airliners are heavily automated with a lot of computer assistance that’s the friend of any low skill or inexperienced pilot. I honestly wonder how he would have fared if he’d tried to fly Boeing planes given they have less automation. But these are only guesses. I have no idea how he managed to last so long and get promoted given his deficiencies.

@@E4RLIES It's most likely just a common phrase, like "God willing" in English. People often use "Si Dios quiere..." ("God willing") or "Dios mediante" (more or less the same) in Spanish for even trivial everyday things ("I'll be there around 5:00"), and it doesn't even mean they believe in God. According to Wikipedia, the Quran requires using this expression when discussing future events... so for someone religious or living in a religious environment is probably automatic when talking in the future tense.
