Great content Greg & team! One note with respect to Remote ID for the Air 2s with the Smart Controller. After performing all the necessary software and firmware updates I could not get rid of the constant Remote ID Error (Code: 161000B4) and the accompanying Unable to takeoff (Code: 30064) error in the DJI Fly app. However, what I was finally able to figure out is if you leave the Fly app and perform the following steps you will finally clear those error messages and be able to fly: - Pull down the device menu from the top of the screen. - Go to the Setup screen (via the gear icon at the top) - Scroll down to the "Personal" section and click on "Location" (which, in my case, was set to OFF) - Flip the switch from Off to On - Choose whatever location "Mode" you prefer (I kept the default of "Device only") - Back out of the settings menu and reboot the controller. - Problem solved! PS - Disappointingly, a call to DJI Technical Support on this issue was not helpful in surfacing the eventual solution documented above!

This is from DJI We are sorry to inform you that Mavic Air 2 cannot comply with the Remote ID rule by upgrading firmware currently. I'd love to give you a clear yes or no but it is not determined yet whether we will release RID-compliant firmware for Mavic Air 2. Thanks for your understanding. You do not need to take any action until September 16, 2023. On and after that date, if you continue to use the drone, you will have to comply with the rule in either of the two ways described below: Operate a drone with a Remote ID broadcast module giving the drone's identification, location, and take-off information. A broadcast module is a device that can be attached to a drone, or a feature (such as a software upgrade) integrated with the drone. Persons operating a drone with a Remote ID broadcast module must be able to see their drone at all times during flight. 2. Operate (without Remote ID equipment) at FAA-recognized identification areas (FRIAs) sponsored by community-based organizations or schools. FRIAs are the only locations unmanned aircraft (drones and radio-controlled airplanes) may operate without broadcasting Remote ID message elements. If you decided to comply with rule by adding a Remote ID module to the drone, kindly be noted that the Remote ID module you purchase must be FAA-approved. Follow the Remote ID module instruction manual to properly install it on the drone. You also need to add Remote ID module information such as make, model, and serial number to the FAA drone registry.

What an absolute clusterfck on the parts of both the FAA and the manufacturers.The overwhelming majority of drones in the US are sold as toys. That word may cause some enthusiasts to bristle but it is accurate. These things are sold at every Walmart in America. The FAA is treating these half pound toys as full blown aircraft and have made compliance absurdly difficult and complex. They have also done an amazingly poor job of communicating (that's government for you). Manufacturers on the other hand have had 4 years to put a simple, inexpensive transmitter in their "toys" so purchasers don't have to jump through a million hoops at significant expense to be able to fly the drone they just purchased. The manufacturers have been no more clear than the FAA. Honestly, if one didn't know better one might think that the FAA's true intention is to eventually eliminate the recreational user from the equation altogether. As usual, Greg did a great job trying to explain things...things that he probably shouldn't need to explain.

Remote ID requires pilots divert their attention away from flying the aircraft and toward their personal safety. Whether flying recreationally or professionally, remote ID requires pilots be keenly alert to who is approaching, assaulting, or stalking them or their families. The FAA identifies drone pilots as pilots of actual aircraft. The FAA's position of "lets just wait and see how many pilots are attacked and how many aircraft crash as a result of this regulation" seems absurd to me. Would they really run the same safety experiment with commercial aircraft? The reason the FAA exists is air safety and a major safety risk is pilot distraction. The FAA has violated it's primary mandate by agreeing to the "add on" regulations demanded by the other 3 letter government agencies. As a result, drone pilots will spend more time looking over their shoulder than flying an aircraft. The FAA has officially declared itself the 5 letter word of the other 3 letter government agencies.

Dont check for compliance. Just buy a drone and fly it. Because the FAA didn't enforce making drone manufacturers build complaint drones. I just bought a Holy Stone HS720G. Their flagship drone. Registered it, and its not remote ID compliant. It was manufactured on 5/23/2023. Well after the cutoff of December 2022. I did my part as a consumer. If the government wants compliant drones they would have forced compliance at the factory.

@@PilotInstitute Great! Thanks. Seems like Dronetag's Beacon ($199) and Mini ($299 w/ LTE) are the front-runners...but they are out of stock/on back order everywhere.

Do you need remote id for recreational flying ??? also what about mavic 2? (no love?)

Yes you do. Anything over 250 grams.

I’m having a hard time finding an answer to this: I have a DJI Mini 2, which is just under the 250g. If I want to use it for part 107, I would need to buy a remote ID module, but then I would also have to register the Mini 2 because attaching the module would push the weight over 250g. Is that the correct logic?
@PilotInstitute Жыл бұрын
If you use the mini 2 under part 107, it must be registered anyway, regardless of weight, so adding a module won't make any difference.

@@PilotInstitute thank you for the response! That makes sense.

My Mavic 3 Classic's Serial Number is inside the FAA list but when I tap on `Flight Checklist', the line `Remote ID functionality normal' does not show up. So, is my Mavic 3 Classic compliant or not? I'm perplexed.

Greg, thanks for this video. I see DJI Air 2S compliant. I have DJI Air 2, but its not on this list. What do you think

Air 2 is not compliant at the moment. Not sure if it will be but if I had to guess I would say it won’t.

If you use it for Part 107 outdoors it must have Remote ID no matter what the weight.

can the remote ID be modified, If we're flying in a different country- We're flying in Japan and after registering with their UA Registration website, they gave us a remote ID we need to program into our drone. but from all the research i've done it doesn't seem likely for us to add or modify the remote ID?

Greg, if you have a BVLOS waiver, have you made a range test of how far RID WiFi from DJI drones will reach? I can see the RID of my Air2S on my iPhone WiFi, but I can't see far enough to make a range test. Do we know how much WiFi output and on which frequencies the FAA required before issuing a DOC?
@Kevin-ib4gv Жыл бұрын
Find the highest area you can. Roof maybe? Secure the drone, remove the props, fire everything up, get in your car and drive. You'll know the range when you lose the RFI signal.

So the one thing that is missing is what model of remote ID to you recommend. I've searched the web and there is surprisingly little information regarding this - and your video has zero links to any. Please advise and greatly appreciated.

I have 3 older drones (2 DJI and 1 Parrot) that do not have Standard Remote ID broadcasting capabilities. If I get one (1) Remote ID module, can I use this for all three drones (considering that I can only operate one at a time) and register the same module for all 3 drones that I have registered with the FAA?
@PilotInstitute Жыл бұрын
If you fly under Part 107, you will technically need to attach the serial number to each aircraft in the dronezone before each flight, which is a pain. If you fly recreationally, then you can do what you mentioned without additional changes each time in the DroneZone.

Just upgraded to an DJI Air 2s, with remote ID, and was very disappointed to see your video about the original Smart Controller 😢. Started flying today using my phone and was so disappointed in the screen I decided to use my SC until September. HOWEVER, to my surprise, and pleasure, the correct ID number showed up on the “ABOUT” screen‼️‼️. Can I assume an update has made the original Smart Controller compatible with Remote ID❓
