I am so glad you noticed and that Pina is safe. I wonder if the Obihiro Zoo inspects their facilities properly every day. I have nothing but doubts about the breeding environment for chimpanzees in Hokkaido. It is sad. The zoo must improve the current environment. For their safety and happiness. Thank you for telling us.

GAZ I enjoy ALL videos on Chimps, but when I see Chimps that look like these ones it makes me Very Sad! It's NOT the Chimps fault! It's the conditions in which they're kept that causes it! You're Pina's Angle! Poor lil Gal was only playing in her enclosure and could have easily Hung herself or have been Severely Injured!
Thank you for informing the zoo staff about the danger and preventing a potential accident! Lil Pina seems to be very inventive and sharp-minded when using the equipments, so they could check again which tool can pose a risk for her (and maybe they could add some more hoses for them to brachiate).

Omg! Thank goodness you not only saw the loose metal wire, but saw the wire used in the most deadly of scenarios probably saved a life. Random loose wires can be ignored by a facility that is not well maintained, but showing basically a garrote around a chimps neck demanded action. Well done.

Should a 5-year-old still be nursing? He's got to be at least 5 or 6.

It does seem like she is quite old to be nursing. The mother will usually wean them by this point in their development. I know they often behave differently in captivity than they do in the wild. Most wild chimps wean their babies at around 4-5 years old although some will wean around 3 years old. At least one wild chimp female was observed to wean several of her children at 2 years old. They were barely old enough to survive but they still stayed with their mother and learned from her. She had a new baby though and couldn’t do much to help them. Anyway, the chimps didn’t die and developed normally despite the really early weaning age.

Why are they all hairless this seems like a decent zoo? I know why chimpanzees lose their hair for multiple different reasons but I'm just wondering is there a reason for these chimps? And she seems a little old to be breastfeeding.

I agree she is old to be breast feeding. I’m surprised that the mom hasn’t weaned her yet. Chimps in captivity with hair patches pulled out don’t have enough enrichment to keep them occupied. So as a result they will groom each other to excess and literally pull each other’s hair out. In the wild, chimpanzees spend about 80% or more of their time searching for and eating food. They also have a lot more parasites to deal with in the wild, so when they do groom they have plenty of critters to focus on removing. Some zoos, like Tama for instance, put food in different types of food puzzles and they have to search for them and figure out how to get to the food. Some also toss small pieces of food on the ground mixed in with the grass outside. They have to search for each morsel of food. If you look at the chimps at Tama zoo, all of them have nice coats of jet black hair. Tama also has a very nice outdoor area that is quite large and has lots of plant material and climbing ropes and platforms. It’s clear that they aren’t bored and seem to be healthy and have a great group. I wish that all zoos had similar facilities and enrichment activities as Tama.

These Chimps are not healthy... so much lost hair. Would seem to indicate over-grooming which could be from boredom or distress.

Why are they all losing their hair???

This could either be genetic or because this region is very cold.
