just broke one of the flippers, it just doesnt go up on my gottlieb "class of 1812". With this video I hope to be able to fix it. I dont know if it is the coil or the metal thing that doesnt go to the end. thanks for your videos!!

Wow, are you a teacher in another life? This video ranks up with some of the best out there for instruction, audio and video! My 13yo son and I have built a small mechanical pinball machine 14"x26" and was wondering what it would take to add some electronics. Score keeper and lights would be easy, but the flippers a bit more tricky. This looks like the doorbell chime that I worked on/replaced, because the kids would repeatedly ring it, so now I see why it burnt out, since it was repeatedly getting put into the high state. Would this flipper setup be the best route to go? Are the parts easily attainable and would we need to get them from a pinball machine company? Thank you for the great video!

On the Driver boards of all pinball machines on the driver board there is a very big large RELAY for the Flipper buttons. Why is the relay so big and why does the flipper buttons need a RELAY to turn on the flipper coils?

That relay is called the "lock out relay." It cuts power to the high power coils and flippers. It's there for safety and security. On some games, there's a switch in the coin door so that if it's opened, power is cut to the coils to avoid any damage to the machine if it's being worked on. This may also cut power to the coils when the game is not in play.
