Akira Takarada was clearly as much of a die-hard fan as we all are, because he’s starred and made cameos in other Godzilla films all the way from the Showa series to Final Wars, and he even apparently had a deleted scene in Godzilla 2014! What a legend. I actually managed to see him in person at G-Fest 2019, but genuinely couldn’t work up the courage to go talk to him. One of the biggest regrets of my LIFE.

The fact that this movie was made 9 years after the dropping of the A-bomb on Japan and that there were still people with those memories fresh in their mind. The technology available to generate the special effects was limited by the era, but even so the emotion of the creators come through hard. Seeing Godzilla rising from behind the hill, absolute chills!

From what I've gathered of Ishiro Honda (the Director), he came from a fisherman island, pretty much like the one in the film. He went to the Mainland for studies in photography and saw a movie for the first time while being there, but then he got drafter to the army during their occupation of China, and WW2. Honda was gutted by what he saw, weither it was from their opponents or hiw own troops, Ishiro left the army with a sour taste, but while on his way back home, he saw a sight that gutted him even more, the ruins of Hiroshima. Ishiro Honda was, given the account of many people who have worked with him, anti war and was one of the nicest man to work with in the studio. He also was like a brother to Kurosawa (Seven Samurai's director) for they had the same Master when entering the movie buisness, he will always take a break to see the Godzilla shootings and share a moment with Honda, even telling him he'd love to do a Godzilla film but, as far as the studios are concerned, he's the Samurai guy. I think that what made Gojira great was that is that, yes it's anti war and anti Nuclear weaponry, but it's not trying to blame anyone, it's many tale entertwined. One about basically a run for the biggest weapon (Godzilla survives the bomb, so Serizawa is forced to create an even stronger one), and how those events lead people to see their hopes, ideals and dreams to be sacrifices. And, as Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho's writer) used to say "How an ugly word makes people having no other choice than to become ugly themselves".

Think about Shin Godzilla too, it came out 5 years after the Tohoku Earthquake/Tsunami along with the Fukushima Meltdown. Just like how Godzillas Destruction in 54 mirrored the nuclear destruction, the destruction Shin Goji leaves behind especially in his first forms look practically like a giant flood ran through the city. I cant imagine how it must've been seeing that Movie after witnessing Tohoku, its no wonder why it was met with National Acclaim.

This really helps drive home that Gojira wasn't just a giant monster movie, it was a disaster movie. It never shies away from depicting the death and destruction Godzilla caused, nor the incredible human suffering he leaves in his wake. It's a somber movie that this song fits so well. Excellent work. More people should watch this video.

The thing is, Godzilla sometimes may be funny, but his origins, or should I say the original Goji was not something to be laughed at. 1954 Gojira was supposed to be a tragedy film. It was supposed to represent post-WW2 Japan, this is shown when in the movie. There is no emotions, not on Gojira, but on the humans who suffered due to his presence. With the chaos Gojira brought to Tokyo being the atomic bombs, and Gojira’s death being the surrender of Japan.

The original Godzilla movie is honestly pretty disturbing. As a metaphor for everything humanity has done and paying the price for their crimes against humanity. That we ourselves created the monster, and the toll is being taken. No matter if you're a Godzilla fan or not, it's still a pretty goddamn good movie. Not a movie, a masterpiece of art. Something about the original is so distressing and it's compelling and complicated to point a finger on. The death and macabre is so depressing. Must've been groundbreaking for the 50's. Jesus, this is deep as hell. RIP to all those who brought this amazing tale of tragedy, recovery, and pain to life.

Perfect. This is just perfect, because most Americans don't understand that Godzilla is more than just lots of monster battles and Godzilla having a ton of screen time. This is why I say Legendary Pictures is listening to the wrong fans; they're only listening to the ones who want 90 minute monster battles masquerading as movies. Human drama is essential to Godzilla movies because it provides balance and something for non-fans to lock onto and appreciate. I think most Americans would be surprised to understand just how much goes on under the hood, as it were, with Godzilla movies most of the time.
@tokuwriter2872
@tokuwriter2872 Жыл бұрын
This is why I’m EXTREMELY excited for Minus 1’s global theatrical release. It’s going to force Americans to see what the TRUE vision of what Gojira is. He isn’t some glorified pro-wrestling dinosaur, he’s not a parody, or even some type of guardian for “Balance”. Godzil- no, Gojira; is the storm above humanities head; an abomination of nature caused by foolishness of mankind’s hubris. Anyone who says the Nuclear allegory is outdated is simply ignorant; Nuclear bombs can still happen and at any moment. Gojira is what we should fear the most as humans. Pure, utter, and unbridled DESTRUCTION.
@MaskedRiderChris
@MaskedRiderChris Жыл бұрын
@@tokuwriter2872 In a way, I think that's kind of what Legendary Pictures is aiming for, but they toned it down for American audiences, for sure. IMO, in those movies, humans have not proven themselves a great enough danger for Gojira to crack down on us as only he can. But yes, this movie will definitely go a long ways towards dispelling the popular American vision of Godzilla as guardian protector. Though the Showa movies went that direction because Eiji Tsuburaya in particular wanted Godzilla to be someone kids could look up to.

I am Japanese, but I think a lot of people should pay attention to the year 1954, when this film was made. In fact, the year 1954, when this film was made, was only nine years after the end of the war. As a Google search of Japanese cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima in 1945 shows, many Japanese cities were destroyed by bombing and literally burnt to ashes. And yet, only nine years later, you have to admire the Japanese of that time for creating the world-famous monster GODZILLA. My grandparents' generation, who never gave in to hardship, never held a grudge against anyone, and simply kept moving forward into the future, are unquestionably wonderful.

With much of the Godzilla series being an obvious allegory for the use of nuclear weaponry, likening the destruction the atomic bombs left behind being as if an immense beast had appeared and laid waste to civilization. "Persecution of the Masses" stands out to me as it is probably among the most encompassing descriptions I've heard to describe the use of nuclear weapons. To drop that degree of destruction upon civilization, upon civilians, not soldiers, Is destruction indiscriminate. Aimless, it doesn't care who of the masses dies, it demands only that they do. "Persecution of the masses" is an apt description of it. The focus the original Godzilla places on the impact Godzilla has on civilians is what makes the film hit so hard. The destruction is the film's spectacle, but its horror comes squarely from the suffering of everyday people you witness. We don't often think too hard about the scars atomic weaponry leaves. Radiation poisoning is a torturous death where your body dies piece by piece while you live. Your skin peels away and your organs die. And beyond that, the chronic effects of large dose radiation exposure will haunt you far into the future. All this is to say that Gojira 1954 is a sobering warning about nuclear weaponry, and how chasing ever greater tools of destruction is a fruitless endeavour that merely sews greater suffering.

@@Leech-3 @CoolerDraws He didn't say any of the things you put in his mouth and yes, America has been r*** the concept of Godzilla since 1956. They are garbage movies trying to divert the original message about the nuking of Japan. I wonder why they're trying to do that. Godzilla is about the eldritch gods unleashed on an unsuspecting people called little boy and fat man. The fury of people for losing, against the need for looking forward and recover and change. America took a dump on all of that and instead made a piece of garbage blockbuster using a Japanese national icon with inherently Japanese messaging to make some buck. Godzilla means something to Japan and her history, you have been conditioned to think he doesn't because you only see the kids monster America presented. As far as I'm concerned Japan can do whatever they wish to Godzilla and you have no say in it. It's no coincidence the actually good movies of Godzilla come from Japan and that Godzilla minus one and Shin Godzilla present him as the original. This is how EVERY Godzilla movie should be: not a bunch of monsters fighting for no reason but a critic about war and nuclear energy.
@Leech-3
@Leech-3 Жыл бұрын
That would be boring and plain if that was EVERY Godzilla movie, you can only remake/ adapt the themes of the original movie so many times before it becomes plain, and overdone. It’s exactly what’s happening with Hollywood with the whole “Revenge is bad” theme that they keep using over and over and over again. Now imagine that same feeling we get from overdone themes, with EVERY Godzilla movie. It’ll become unoriginal and stale after a while.

Well the first Godzilla movie was really a horror and catastrophic movie, the one of few in which human side is likeable and you cheer for people to kill Godzilla. The whole oxygen destroyer idea was also good, can you use superweapon on monster created by other superweapon. Serizawa was a tragic character, he created one of most destructive things not wanting that at first place. I know it's special effects are cheesy after nearly 80 years but damn, still propably the strongest Godzilla movie, a film classic and one of best monster movie, in same league as King Kong.

Funfact: In the original script of the original movie, Godzilla would had a cult of people that believed that Godzilla was an emissary of death and apocalypse for the damage that the japanesse people caused, so this song had more merits to be one of, if not, TOP tier Godzilla themes
