During a collision if the fuel line is ruptured, that integral relay is turned off by the PCM when the PCM sees the crankshaft stop turning. This was mandated by the Feds so that occupants still alive don't find themselves in a growing pool of gasoline under the vehicle, that possibly might catch fire. So, an external replaceable relay ought to be grafted into the circuit. For CYA reasons.

@@davidnull5590 And what if the inertia switch was replaced ... with a jumper? Or if said switch did not pop the ball bearing out because the impact was not enough? What if you have a failing injector that could pump the fuel tank dry into the intake manifold? What if the fuel pressure regulator failed? On older vehicles, the return line could be pouring fuel all over the place, which might not occur if the pressure did not build and the injectors did not start the engine..,., pump would be off until it started. Save a few bucks and a few minutes, but the 'new designer' could be on the hook if any of that occurred due to deleting ECM control of the pump. There is a safety risk here. If the truck is in an accident where the fuel line was severed the fuel pump will continue to run as long as the key is on, dumping fuel on the ground and creating a fire hazard. The ECU would normally stop the fuel pump as soon as the engine stalled, making a fire significantly less likely and less devastating. Your bypass would literally be adding fuel to the fire if there was one. The inertia switch should in theory trip, but those take a good shock to trigger. Depending on the accident it may not cut off the fuel. That said, still better than junking the truck over a stupid module. I would have integrated some kind of stall cut-off though.

Worked good but the secondary circuit high code is still there. Doesn't set light and runs like a charm. Had a tough time confirming fix cause of fuel gauge issues one I had didn't have adapter. So I rented one from autozone. Car was running, revving up battery voltage good but no fuel pressure on gauge reading. Didn't want to take out on road cause I used up free tows and didn't want to pay the high tow bill. So I got one from O'Reily's and same thing. It needs a certain pressure just to start I thought. So I ordered one from Amazon but adapter I needed was damaged! Lol so I go to harbor freight and but one there and it worked. Had fuel pressure on readings and it was perfect. So I say all that to say be weary of rental fuel gauges. Might end up with a new fuel pump when not even needed.

Isn’t the fuel pump relay there as a protection. With this jump the pump will run when ever the key is on. If the car stalls it should shut off. That’s what the fuel pump relay is really for. Like for instance if the fuel line were to become compromised to the point where it leaks causing a stall it will continue to pump fuel out until the key is turned off.
@ArtVan-s4lКүн бұрын
So after the fix, when the ignition switch is on and when the engine is not running the pump is running ? If yes, then maybe adding the "bypass" relay would be a better idea. Of course I'm assuming in normal operation ( before the fix ) the pump only primes when the ignition switch is first turned on and then turns off if the engine is not started.

That's so crazy, I literally just did a bypass like this for a customer Camry yesterday. However, I told him that this is only temporary and he has to promise me to buy a replacement relay (on Toyota it's an unserviceable cartridge with multiple relays inside, atleast the cartridge can be replaced) because in the event of an accident, the job of the Toyota circuit opening relay is to open the circuit to cut off fuel. He agreed but I don't think he's buying the relay lmao. Still gotta cover your ass though.
Yeah. The concerns of safety really hit me hard. Allowing the pump to run continuously would be a bit nasty in a KO-EO situation. I think an external relay added in would be the best thing. Inertia switch aside. A key switched relay controlled by the engine electronics. Definitely. Reminds me of a copycat guy who installed an electric booster pump in his muscle car. Like I did in the few I had. He went to a car show and left the accy. switch on. Big mistake because that's the circuit that the pump was wired into. After a few hours with the radio on he got in to go for a ride. People tell me vividly what happened then. A Chrysler 426 Hemi with 2 4 barrel carbs. When he hit the starter. There was a loud "THUD" under the hood. He popped the hood before the fire under it could bake the paint and someone came with a fire extinguisher. The valve covers were warped. A few cover bolts were blown off flush with the cylinder head. The dipstick launched out. And being a Hemi with plug wires in tunnels. Were blown right off of the plugs. A big mess. The engine after repairs had a rattle that he never was able to get fixed after a teardown. New engine with Keith Black parts. All for a ten-buck relay and proper wiring. Me? Electric pump wired into the oil pressure switch with a relay and tickled by the ignition switch in start only to give the relay coil some pixies. No oil pressure, no pump. Until the starter is engaged. Yeah. I think an outboard relay at the very least would have been almost as quick. And much, MUCH safer. But you do amazing work. This one made me think. Ivan, Really??!!

Not to be a negative nancy.. but, I don't really like this fix because the PCM is no longer in control of the fuel pump, and the pump is going to run no matter what when he turns on the key. So if he's sitting somewhere with the key on and running his radio a bit or something-- the pump is just running and running and will likely shorten it's life. As you showed on (2:20).. The control wire was also exposed (12 on the junction box.. or 27 on the PCM)... So a better solution would have been to add an external relay and tie it in to the same control -- and also the same power feed (which you did). At least that way, the PCM still has it's original control and not leave any codes at all; all we did was make the relay external... (and I know you did mention it at the end).... .. I guess it's not a big deal as long as he knows not to sit with the key on when it's not running.

Ivan, please tell me this was a quick bush repair to get the truck home. To do this safely, the fuel pump relay must be replaced, not bypassed. An external relay and socket would do the trick nicely. You don't want the pump running continuously key on engine off because if the fuel line breaks while driving the ECM can't shut off the pump to prevent a huge volume of gas spraying out all over the hot engine creating a fire risk. It's unlikely but not something you want to be liable for.

Sorry, Ivan. I normally agree with you on 99% on your NPR repairs. But this is a safety issue. Normally, if a vehicle flips over and the PCM doesn't receive a crank signal with the key on, it will disable the fuel pump to mitigate a gasoline fire hazard. (1/of 3) I'd of preferred you replicate the "pitted" relay externally to the junction box rather than just jumper around it. However I'm uncertain if the control lines for this pitted relay are available. If so, an additional external relay best meets engineering criteria. -----(2/of 3) If it's possible to remove all connections to the pitted relay load contacts you might revitalize points by applying a punch-through voltage to them. Clearly, if done wrong you'll roast your terminal block.---- (3/of 3) I learned early in my career that relay points for D.C. currents thru inductive loads require a diode across across inductor load IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION to current flow to allow collapsing inductor flux to continue flowing thus preventing arcing across relay points. Recall, inductor voltage, V_L = L(dI/dT) so that quick dT => enormous V_L unless this load diode shorts out collapsing flux. Also with instantaneous decaying current (dI), V_L goes negative to then forward bias its diode to collapse its field rather than jump the relay points. DO FUEL PUMPS HAVE INTEGRAL COIL DIODES??
@windward281821 сағат бұрын
Yes in tank fuel pumps have built in free-wheeling (suppression) diode. However, if you are in doubt you could monitor the circuit when the pump is turned off to see if there is an inductive kick. But, in the video the owner had already replaced the fuel pump in the tank so the diode should be brand new. The diode is integral with the pump internal motor connection. Most quick repairs for this problem with older vehicles are to parallel an external relay to perform the same function of the internal relay while making sure to disconnect the internal relay coil connection so the PCM low side driver only has to drive one relay coil. Based on the wiring diagram shown in the video you can easily parallel the fuel pump relay function for this vehicle. Many times if you pull apart the Central Smart Junction Box you will find the reason for no power feed is one of the relay power PCB solder joints has cracked and failed and the failure is not due to pitted relay contacts. Cracked solder joints can even burn the PCB depending on the design so if the PCB is severely damaged you may have to add an external relay anyway. Many times you can clearly see that the solder joint or a PCB trace at the joint is completely severed.

Nice solution, but if it were my truck I'd just replace the internal relay with an external one, making sure it would behave as stock.

wow reading the comments there is no love for ivan on this fix. if that thing makes another year in new york state it'll be lucky.

Hi Ivan, I have a doubt about how the fuse been powered while testing with light both sides however in the diagram was after the relay and the feed was before the relay not before the fuse...... Did you check wire integrity from the relay to the pump and the feed in the load side under the relay.

If the relay just dangles off of the wiring harness, I would just cut off the wires and put little slip-on crimp terminals and then slide them onto a new relay. We're talking a $10 repair to do it right.

Nice fix. I have a question. Some cars have a safety function that will shut off the fuel pump if you are in a accident. I am not sure if the truck has that function but your fix would probable disable that function right?

@@ludvigjakobsson9347 the Inertia Switch will trip and cut power to the pump anyways in an accident 😉

😱 Check your ‘jumper’ wire guage size & what wire size you’re tapping into. Should match or be larger than the existing long run of fuel pump power wire…

If I was a shop owner, I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be with the bypass. It disables PCM control of the fuel pump, which in turn disables a number of safeties. That's a huge liability for the shop. An external relay, while adding a bit of cost and time to the repair, would retain all the needed safety provisions.

Wire around the bad relay, it is fused and turned on by the ECM relay

I have stripped those boxes before you just have to take a picture of the fuses pop the clips and separate the box to get to the relay

Late 90's ford pickup trucks also had relay soldered to fuse panel board, I desoldered relay and replaced, it is a tiny relay, your fix would have been easier and a bigger relay

Well done, Ivan! Clever way to bypass an absurd problem "invented" by Ford! Initially I thought you would install an external relay, but when you said "no parts required" and shown the diagram, it's a perfect solution.

It's not a perfect solution. Any time the vehicle has any service requiring key on engine off the fuel pump will run constantly. Run out of gas and leave the key on and the pump runs dry. If you run out of gas and want to push the vehicle or flat tow it the key must be on. If you run out of gas and call for a tow the tow operator will turn the ignition on to turn the wheels, load the vehicle etc, and the pump will run constantly with the key on, running a liquid transfer pump dry is never good for the pump.

@@truracer20 You are right. I hadn't thought of that situation. Thanks for pointing that out 👍

This sounds similar to the F-150 fuse 27 problem. It's so common, there's a Fuse 27 relocation kit.

ive done quite a few of these, for some reason it seems to be a little more prevalent on the 2013 models over the others
