The control pin on that relay was hot because it was back feeding thru another relay. The click you heard was because the test light was grounding the other relay. I'm assuming it controls 2 relays.. ESC light was definitely most likely because of the steering being off. We have that issue all the time with the xB's. I believe somewhere between 10-15 degrees is the limit it can be off..

I can only imagine how many vehicles wind up costing hundreds if not thousands of $ needlessly because of failed connections! If you don't have the instruments/knowhow to track gremlins like that down, most people will be pulling their hair and their wallets out! Great vid, Ivan! Enjoy your trip! 🐴👍

Yep, maybe it was setting a code in the past for fuel pressure and someone spread those pins by stuffing multimeter probes in there (or something equally large) and created a new problem.

I own an engineering company, where bug tracking on industrial equipment is pretty common. It is somewhat semilar to the problems you encounter in a car. I have made it "mandatory" to measure signals with the oscilloscope instead of going "parts cannon" right away. I'm really happy for the inspiration. I'm considering making yours, and Eric's videos mandatory teaching for those who work in the shop

Finally an HHR!!! That's what I drive, but mine doesn't have GDI, a vacuum pump, or a turbo. Seems weird, because mine's a 2010. I rode in an SS model with the turbo, and I didn't really sense that much acceleration when the driver punched it. Really thankful I was lucky and didn't get the GDI - didn't realize it was around at the time. And glad I got a clutch!

Thank you for the deep dive into this pump circuit. Possibly a thinner pin on the AM pump? Would have thought 10 volts would still operate the solenoid. Inductive reactance probably adding more resistance when pulsed at higher frequencies. Low budget fixes may get you running or require a competent tech to uncover non Original Equipment Manufacture issues.

Great diagnostic, Ivan! It definitely looked like a broken wire in the solenoid, making random contact - it was not a wire, it was the connector. That dealer modification probably wasn't made with OEM parts, to save a few bucks. Good catch on that undocumented trap. Would be interesting to know a follow up, after pressure sensor is replaced.

Mr. Ivan, my prediction is that the dealer installed aux. vacuum pump is somehow tied to the boost pressure sensor. I bet the pump is only commanded on when the boost pressure is above a certain psi for a certain period of time. The only thing here in my thinking out loud to you (that I can't explain) is why it is throwing the control circuit code and not some other code. Also, I'm chasing a p06a7 circuit b reference code on a lincoln mkz after cleaning intake valves that's kicking my tail. I'd send money for advice.. lol seriously though thank you for sharing your experience and electrical knowledge through these videos.

So I guess with this model, power to the pump activates it rather than reduces it as you thought? And the computer was generating those strange 3v intermediate voltages by itself as a result of reacting to an open circuit? Quite strange behavior. Seems that when designing that they didn't pay much attention to how it would throw off diagnosis (I'm sure there is a good reason of course, maybe they are trying to save the driver in case it shorts? Not sure...).

Another great video , I love the way you think out aloud as I try to follow your thought process . Sometimes I come up with the same ideas which gives me some confidence all the time I spend watching these videos is actually teaching me diagnosis skills outside my normal work knowledge . I take it you replaced the HP fuel pump with a OEM unit , you didn't show that on the video but you did say the non oem pump smelt of fuel on the camshaft follower end you would source a OEM replacement. I often thought how a gasoline turbo vehicle can obtain brake booster vacuum when the intake manifold runs a positive pressure most of the time now I know. The additional vacuum pump makes sense almost like a diesel vehicle using a pump to obtain vacuum.

(I'm 5 mins in, you just pulled the pump)- I feel like we should devise some way to physically check the pressure on the high pressure side. I know the scantool is already reading it. Hey Ivan, nice job on this video. I own the exact same car right down to the same color except my car is a 2009, so I really wanted to comment on this video. You mentioned the map sensor is bad. I totally agree and this is why: The map sensors in that car are aftermarket Bosch 3-bar map sensors. Looks like ZZ Performance sold those to the previous owner. This company is an Ecotech tuner shop out of Flint, Michigan. Anyway , the HHR SS uses 2-bar map sensors both on the top and bottom. You can easily spot the top sensor on the intake. Looks like the pervious owner went a little crazy on modding that car up. But if you go with oem map sensors, I am betting that car will run fine. Hope this helps. This is officially my favorite Pine Hollow video now:) Keep the videos coming Ivan, I enjoy watching. Cheers! P.S. There is a slight possibility that HHR may not have a stock tune. That means there is a chance the ecm in that car is not the original. If you are able to verify that, check and see if that car is tuned for 24psi of boost. If you see 30psi of boost, that means the car has been tuned. This is how us Ecotech fans go faster by making 300hp compared to the stock 260hp these cars make factory. The way ZZ performece tunes these cars is by selling pre-tuned ecm's to customers so it's a simple plug n play and have 300hp. The customer sends their stock ecm back to the company. But you need 3-bar map sensors to accomplish this because the stock 2-bar sensors will fail under boost. I really hope you will not need a stock ecm , but it just looks like to me on this end, that car might be tuned. Good luck:)

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Hey Ivan:) that made my night that you responded. I am so glad I was able to provide insight. Sorry I have not gotten back to you about my other HHR with the EVAP code, the reason why is because the CEL has not come back on since Jaunary, and I put that car up for the summer and have the SS out. But this fall when I get that car back out and if the CEL comes back on, I will be making a trip down to state college to see you, but I sincerely appreciate your time corresponding with me:) If you need anymore help on the SS you are working on, I might be able to assist. I have owned my SS for 7 years and it has been an adventure. It needed a whole new engine just one year after owning it, so currently my car is behaving. Here is some more advise: If you continue to have technical problems with the car you are working on, I would live chat with an associate at ZZ Performance. They know what are talking about and their customer support is amazing! I look forward to the follow up video to this car. Best of luck my friend. Cheers!

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Sorry Ivan, don't mean to bother you, but I thought of something just now. The lower map sensor on the charge pipe is a total nightmare to remove. If you have to remove that sensor, loosen the lower radiator supports and push the whole radiator forward. This will let you gain access to the sensor. Your other option, is a phillips head screwdriver bit with about 4 feet of extensions. It is possible to snake that whole extension from the top of the engine to get to the sensor. Shine a flashlight down there and you will see it. If none of that works, remove the bumper lol. I have had mine off many times and it is super easy. Good luck and have a good night🙂

When you ground the control side of the relay with the test light, some other relay clicks. This means it's wired in parallel with some other relay. But how can it be setting a circuit code then? There is already a relay in the circuit. Maybe having two in circuit has the computer sensing too much current (double the usual for one relay) and it's setting it because of that? Is the control side of the relays miswired?

When you plugged the boost sensor back in at 33:48, it did spike down to 0.9v and 4psi. Why would it do that? I guess it's still wrong though. It should either read 0 psi, or 14 psi (atmospheric pressure)- depending on how it is calibrated. But I'm wondering, why would it spike down towards the correct pressure when you were plugging it in? Could it just be another bad connection at that plug? (or I suppose it could be a bad connection internally inside the sensor too). You didn't break down the 4 wires to the sensor on a schematic, so I don't really know how it works; I think they are usually only 3 wire for a pressure sensor, so this probably has a temp sensor built in also or something- since it's a 4 wire.. But it just makes me wonder what could make it spike down like that, and basically work correctly for that split second? Kinda strange
