Exactly!! And not even just ‘for their time periods’, honestly. I study & teach a couple courses on ancient history (mostly Mesopotamia, but I dabble in human origins) and it’s not only monumental architecture that were feats of human effort. Massive ‘tells’ (mounds) aren’t just piles of dirt: they are the results of years upon years upon years of occupation and building in the same area, creating layers of history!* Sometimes, particularly in N. America, these mounds WERE created intentionally, but over an extremely short period of time, meaning it would have taken a massive amount of labor and social organization. We’ve built palaces, ziggurats, temples, towers, fortresses, etc. for many, many, millennia now. If Shane & co. had done one iota of research, they would’ve been able to see that none of this popped up overnight; there was a progression. Humans can do some really amazing things and it’s insulting and ignorant (and often racist!) to go around desperately trying to prove ‘theories’ that say otherwise, you know? *you know, it’s kinda fun to think about that YOU are currently helping to create one (or at least something similar), just by living right now!

True story: A few years ago, I was with a girl that I was on the verge of dating. We were talking about how crazy the world is these days and how many crazy conspiracy theories are on the rise. I started naming off certain groups of theorists, jokingly naming off the dumbest that I could think of. She didn’t have a problem with anything that I had said until I said flat-earthers. I was blown away, but I had to know why. She kept saying, “I don’t care about the shape of the earth” and it only confused me more. If you aren’t a flat earth believer, then WHY would you have a problem with me calling them out? As it turns out, Shane Dawson was her source. She was directly quoting the flat-earther in the video that Shane published. It became sort of a meme in my friend group for a short while. For those who might ask, I DID delicately try to explain that the earth is round without making her feel like I was mansplaining or talking down to her. THEN I showed her videos of people explaining that the earth is round. She ultimately continued on with “I just don’t care about the shape of the earth.”

It is hilarious though, for NASA and government, to create OFFICIAL sites disproving what's clearly not real. I did like watching whatever "proof" flat earthers could ever come up with, to prove their point, which in the comments others would troll and what not. But now all u see is, how only dumb people think of this, how it is clearly fake, the words "Flat" "Earth" alone trigger only major results posted by cliche youtubers covering the said topic and "disproving" it, as if they're the first humans to ever do so, rather than any other content, at all. So I think, this fuels more fun to people who already don't have a solid view on Earth's shape, but also know of NASA's moon landing clownery. If not flag then something else would just as easily be top of the list. I hear the shadows point more tbh, but the stars one is just as believable and noticeable imo as the flag. There are people who believe the earth is flat because the horizon is. If people want to believe a conspiracy that made sense for a moment intuitively enough, they’ll find the “evidence” to support it. The flag made a better photo imo and those who don’t want to deny the reality get to appreciate that

I watched an interview with H3 and Bo Burnham from around the same time and they joked about the Hologram moon theory as Bo was unclear at 1st that he was talking about the moon landing theory. (In this context he was talking about a friend who didn't believe in the moon landing and didn't think that he had to clarify as it was the most popular moon related theory at the time). Maybe that is where Shane got the hologram tangent from. I am gonna go retrieve my dog's food bowl now. Thanks for reading my tangent.

It's pretty telling that if you break it down faking the moon landing would be as big of, if not bigger, feat than actually landing on the moon. 1: You'd have to somehow convince the Russians(and anyone with a sufficiently powerful telescope) that we landed on the moon. 2: The moon landing was broadcasted (on delay in case of an accident) live for 9 hours You'd need to pristinely cut 9 hours of film(in a massive canister of film) with no mistakes hairs, cuts or even dust. 3: Getting Kubrick to accept errors like shadows, the flag waving in the wind, the stage light, and the c rock.

People spend all this time analyzing the photos and videos but like... the astronauts left behind retroreflectors on the moon which you can bounce lasers off of. Even if the moon landing was faked good enough to fool the Soviets but not good enough to fool Shane Dawson, there is stuff on the moon that must have got there somehow.
@saucevc835310 ай бұрын
TO BE FAIR (I can't believe I'm trying to be fair to Shane Dawson) the retroreflectors really aren't visible unless you have a big telescope and a huge laser so only scientific observatories can verify it. I guess in Shane's conspiratorial world, all those observatories are just paid off, even the ones owned by the Soviets?

I love how the ‘proof’ in some of theories are just so obvious that there’s no way they would have overlooked it, if it was actually a conspiracy. You’d think that’d make them go “I probably just don’t know all the facts”, but no, they’re the only people who noticed a huge oversight, sure

I really hate the excuse of "oh his fans are in on the joke." Sorry but there are plenty of people that take this seriously. Whether it's cause they're neurodivergent or cause they're young or they're just plain naive, people will take this stuff seriously. I know conspiracy theories personally mess with my OCD and paranoia a lot even if I know they aren't real. Just because some people might be in on the joke, doesn't mean everyone will be. Hence why tone indicators are VERY helpful, because some people can't tell jokes. So even if he was in on the joke and his fans were too, it doesn't erase the fact that there are people out there taking it seriously and that it can cause a lot of misinformation to spread. Even with some of my favorite KZbinrs, I sometimes miss jokes or don't understand that they were joking even though to most people it would be obvious. So something like this, played where it's so serious, yeah that excuse is not okay. /srs
