That’s a beautiful building! We didn’t have room for the 30’x60’ building we wanted because of drain and septic lines so we settled for two 30x30’s and I am glad. One became a garage and the other my canning & freeze drying kitchen, extended pantry and mini gym. We did closed cell foam insulation in both and it’s the best thing we did. What a big difference it made for us here in Southeast NC.

Hi Brad, great video like always! It's always great to watch videos like this from a fellow Bay County resident. Regarding the structural integrity benefits, I should mention that closed cell SPF improves the wind uplift between 2-3 times and wall racking strength up to 3-4 times. This was one of the main reasons I chose to use closed cell on my steel building (after Hurricane Michael ). It makes a huge difference. Blessings and continued success for you and Deb at Piney Grove. P.S.: You can google one of the papers: The Use of Closed Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam to Enhance the Structural Properties of Wall and Roof Assemblies.

Brad, thanks for the information. I have the same type shed with 12' high walls. There are garage doors at both ends, but with south Texas heat it is difficult to work inside during summer. This video has motivated me to do something similar. Again, thanks and stay safe.

Everything you said is true. Spray foamed our house near Houston. Closed cell on roof and open cell on walls of stick built framing with hardi plank. We did 3.5" on the roof and 3" on the wells. We did open cell on walls due to cost about 2/3 cost. I thought about fiberglass but everything you said is true....Fiberglass is much cheaper adds no strength, it is not a vapor barrier, adds no strength, and in the country it is open to insects and rodents. We also had to use baffles on the roof line break at the porch. Good Job Mason

i have the exact same type of building with closed cell. Hang some large movers quilts on the wall. When it rains it gets so loud inside. Also mr cool mini splits seem to work really well too. If you want to insulate the big doors, there is a yt video that is sheet foam and magnets that works really good.

Exposed close cell looks better than open cell. Looking at the 2-1/2 tubes and depth of foam, doesn’t look like 2” on ceiling. I caught that on first day of spraying and they went back and corrected. 30x50 metal shop, 12’ walls, 2” closed on roof, 1” closed on all walls in Wakulla County, fall of 2023, $7700. Happy with it. Too bad the room isn’t on other side with toilet and shower. Sure would be a nice work area come July/August.

Open cell foam is like installing a loud speaker system so you can hear everything outside. Closed cell stops the transfer of sound from outside.

Do you know roughly how many board feet of foam you had installed? That'd make an apples to apples cost comparison easier. Thanks!

@@PineyGroveHomestead Your foam installers would know. But the calculation is "square feet covered * thickness of foam. So, a section 12" x 12" x 1" is one board foot.

I don’t understand how you going to insulate on the outside of the 2 1/2 inch tubing. Can you explain that please
@PineyGroveHomestead29 күн бұрын
This is for a thermal barrier only, not air tight insulation for a conditioned space. The reason we scraped the tubing was for an OSB wall. If we wanted to retain the R-value of the foam, we wouldn't have scraped it.

Spray foam has gone out the roof. They wanted more to insulate my barn then they did my house 10 years ago when I built it. Crazy, but it is legit. BTW the advantage of the closed cell foam is that it is non-combustible as opposed to open cell which must be covered because it will burn.

When the cost of energy goes up, the cost of spray foam goes up as it is petroleum based.
@publicEnima2 ай бұрын
can't compare close cell with "R-value" its not reallly an apples to apples comparison. different chemistry involved I would compare close cell to how much BTU of heat or cooling you can retain. 2inch of close cell would retain about 85% of the heating and cooling you put into the building. It would also help, if there was a vapor barrier before the tin, incase you dent the tin and have to replace a panel.
@OkieRedneck68Ай бұрын
As a spray foam owner/operator, I would not be allowing my hired hands inside shop without protective equipment. Yea shop is big and open and for you to come in and shoot is one thing but how often is these employees exposed to those particles. Not good.
