PING G400 IRONS reviewed and tested by PGA professional AskGolfGuru Mark Crossfield. Mark tests the Ping G400 irons and with the help of on course and dry ball data talks about who might get the most from these golf clubs. The Ping G400 irons are aimed at high launching low spin ball models for golfers looking for help.

I just got mine. These are the best clubs I have ever hit. Moved up from G15 and what a difference. Outstanding accuracy is what first jumped out at me. Greens were hard as rocks due to stiff winds and no rain for 2 weeks. Hit a 6 iron 195 yards stiff into a green and the ball bounced once and STOPPED dead. (Kind of wish it would have released.....I was 30 feet short of the pin !! Ha). So very happy with the decision to get these sticks. Wow.

I just bought them. Havent yet the opportunity to test, but i moved up a few categories. I was using old golfsmith xpc clubs which are 'players classic', so very unforgiving. I got used to them so much I rarely miss.

These probably are the nicest looking "g" series ping irons in a long time. Should fit into a lot of peoples games, but like Dan , with that kind of offset at address I'd never want them in my bag unless the performance numbers were too good to ignore. I'd just feel like I'm fighting the design looks too much in a 3-5 iron were the game improvement aspects of the club should be giving me the most confidence. Still Ping looks to have a really nice set of irons here

Mark, I imagine these irons are made with the common golfer in mind. I think you may agree that a very common ball flight for this golfer is a fade, or sometimes the slice? These shots typically produce rather high spin numbers, and would typically require some instruction/swing changes to properly correct. Having said that, the low spin characteristics would then become appropriate in many of these cases, allowing for better carry with sufficient stopping power. Would you say this is the true reason for stronger lofts+low cg?

As always Mark, a very insightful and considered opinion. Suggestion for future reviews: Is it possible to indicate what handicap range WOULD benefit from a given club or technology? e.g., Low, medium, high handicapper. Or perhaps offer competitions to your followers to join you on a test day for different clubs, and we get to see how low, medium, and high handicappers perform and find a given club etc? Keep up the great work. Andy (UK originally, now lives in TN, USA - we met at TopGolf in Vegas last November)

The difference in spin between yours and Dans using the same club must be due to dynamic loft versus static loft. That is, loft as delivered to the ball. You obviously deliver less loft at strike therefore less spin and more run on at landing. Makes a great point for getting fitted before purchase. As far as a lie in rough or wet grass it seems we all have to make our best guess as to what club to pull and adjust based on experience. Every weekend the tour pros are short or long over the back quite often. And they have been perfectly fitted. It’s a tough game.

These clubs are actually the highest in the "low spin" "game improvement" clubs. The spin really is not that bad. Not far off from a forged iron for a game improvement club which really shows the technology in what Ping is doing compared to Taylormade who keep dropping the lofts which in turn drastically drops the spin rates.

Really liking the 2 person testing for comparison. I was fitted a few months back and ended up with the cf16. Almost all reviews of this club also came back as low spin but with my delivery numbers they were spot on, just like dan with these. Seeing as you are doing lots more situational testing would you be better off switching to TM as it excels in reading this kind of real ball real course data? It would give you numbers to backup the wedge flier you got and be a great comparison to dan?

I think another major consideration is gapping. Starting point would be my 50 degree which carries 120. The PW on this set would be at least 30 yds on plus roll. For me this would leave far too many situations without a playable option.

Read the GolfWrx article on decent angle making up for lower spin numbers. But I would have thought that would only come into play on softer "accepting" greens. For example where I'm a member, the greens at the moment or rock hard even full shot 60* wedges are bouncing and running off.

Hi Mark, curious about your comments regarding spin being too low for your liking with a lot of the new irons. I remember when you were testing the G25 irons you said that you could easily game those. Now with G400/M2 and similar irons you say you probably wouldn't want to game them. Is it because these new models produce quite a bit less spin than the G25 or are you more focused on spin now you are probably getter more accurate spins readings and have also taken your testing out on the course?

Ok. Just getting back into the game after 10 year hiatus I am trying to understand club characteristics vs swing characteristics. I actually did a fitting now that the dust has been knocked off the swing and these clubs performed best by a long shot over all the other majors in this GI category (albeit red dot and 2 degree strong). I think this is what you were getting at in the vid. For my swing these were stopping on the green at the range. For your swing (flight/ trajectory) they fly over. Just don't want to get something that I'll get frustrated with in a couple years. FYI - followed your recommendation of finding a coach/fitter with full technical capabilities and outdoor range (full ball flight) for the fitting. Fantastic experience.

The way you guys come off in this video it could be perceived that you don't like these clubs and they don't perform well. Through the lens of a scratch golfer they obviously don't look or produce numbers like you would want. For a 19 HC trying to get better these would be great. That said I can use my "game improvement" G30s which aren't that different from these and hit elevated greens all day with no problem stopping. I don't know what the spin on them is but it doesn't matter to me. What matters is they aren't hard to use and I score well with them. The focus of these clubs is the be forgiving and allow golfers who don't hit as well to still find some distance so they get better instead of tired. 7k spin on a 7I isn't as important to the target audience for these clubs but getting the ball up and moving sure is. I have no doubt you (Crossfield) already know all of this and you sort of touched on it a little deep into the video. Unfortunately that isn't the impression a lot of viewers may get the way this review was delivered.

who exactly are game improvement irons aimed at ? no good if i can't get the ball to stop on the green, especially on my home course, and if its toe or heel strikes then i can't say i have seen any data to prove improvement in this area at all distance control is hard enough but if you think you can guess the bounce, lie etc in the rough, fairway or bunker in front of the pin/green you must be a tour player or GOD you can't purchase good golf, have a lesson

Mike Gannon I went from Callaway S2H2's to Ping G irons and honestly the ball stops as good on the green. Just today I crushed a 5 iron off the tee on a 208yd par 3, my shot landed on the back third of the green and stopped within 10'. 8 iron stops within a few feet, wedge and u wedge can actually get backspin play. I can say without a doubt that the concern for being able to stop on greens is a bit over played. Just go out and hit the damn things and enjoy.

You keep complaining how these game improvement irons fly too far and don't spin enough etc etc etc so why don't you go back to that same 174 yard spot and hit an 8 iron instead of the 7 and see how it goes. You are always so quick to point out how it's the user who is responsible for the results not the club but here you are blaming the club and not really doing a full and proper test. You're better than this Crossfield.

Mark Crossfield yes I saw the dry ball data, however it's the on course real performance that we like to see. Is it a bad thing if you can hit an 8 iron 174? That's what I'm trying to get to. It would be nice to see 2 shots from that spot. There will always be a learning curve with new clubs and your time with them is short but in that case I'd like to see you try a couple of different clubs. Golf is a game of constantly making adjustments (lie, wind, pin location etc) and I'd like to see you adjust as well. Keep it up 🏌️

Dry ball was 160 yds w a 7 iron 6k revs. The second shot was 168 into wind and you went w 5 iron which was fine but why not hit a stock 7 from there after knowing what it's done after that first shot from 174 or maybe also try and flight an 8 iron down to 168? I'm just saying I'd like to see a few more shots hit, I know the vids can't be too long either so basically I'm saying I want all possible content in as little time...oh boy, I just said that out loud 😂

G400 vs 718 AP1 which do you like better?

G400s for distance. Ap1’s for spin. I game g400’s and i have 0 regrets. Best g.i. irons out right now imo. Ap1’s felt just like every other iron out, nothing special. AP3’s are the real deal.

One minute saying numbers don't matter, then a total contradiction on this test when all you've gone on about is spin numbers!!!your starting to confuse yourself.

+Sharon wooster not sure that is true. Numbers on the Matt on a launch monitor can tell you very little if you think distance is the box you look at. Did you see the situation tests? These clubs give great dry numbers, but that is not how we play golf. Hope that helps
