A relatively serious film that's _pretty_ family-family sounds like the sweet spot for a great Superman film. He's already said in the past that, unlike Guardians, he did not write Superman as a comedy, so this isn't a surprise. Most Superman stories usually have some levity, though, even stories with very serious themes. A Superman adaptation should never be joyless.

This is something I wanted from the previous dc series, have different tones for different characters. That's something WB/zack snyder didn't understand. Not every character needs to be dark and serious that tone needs to fit with a certain character and I'm glad James Gunn is actually understanding that. Remember he did the guardian of the galaxy trilogy

Slither was pretty good though .. Total shlock but good shlock. Very self aware. I don't like his superhero spoofs though. It certainly won't work with Superman. I think it's going to flop hard.

I maintain that, as far as live-action interpretations go, Superman and Lois has achieved that fine balance of hopeful, yet serious tone. While I love both Superman the Movie and Man of Steel, the episodic format of Superman and Lois allows it to have multiple tones that you can't really get in a film.

People can have their own take on which portrayal of Superman they like. They can like the darker version. Personally I’d prefer the more classical Superman where he’s less of a killer and more happy. Now I’m well aware Superman has a past when he’s done some dark things before, that’s just not the version I like. I mean I do like DC being dark and rated R I’m just saying not every character needs to be like that imo.

Superman comics lost popularity because he was to goody two shoes & wholesome (CORNY) & that's WHY they killed Superman in the comics to shake stuff up. Of course there the few who like the campy stuff, the money will talk & i don't trust ANYTHING Gunn says, he lies A LOT. I prefer the edgy stuff, even when i was a teenager which is why i gravitated towards the DC darker movies over the kids popular Marvel. Gunn said its not a comedy. But Superman stories often have levity. The Daiy Planet staff, for one, is often quite funny, not only in the comics, but in animation, live action TV shows, and in the Donner films. Gunn specifically said he wrote Superman to fit the tone of the character and that it's not a comedy, so I think Gunn can deliver an earnest and heartfelt portrayal. We'll see what the tone is when the trailer drops.

In all honesty, he could say that he's making the movie serious if he wants. @@demetrisross17 I just love how some so-called "DC fans" seem to hate the actual character of Superman and disrespect his classic look that he still wears in other media today. Thinking him wearing his trunks is too "goofy" for him or his story to be treated seriously sounds like the attitude of someone who likely has a very limited frame of reference when it comes to Superman, and who wants the character to only be some dark, edgy version... frankly, a mind-set typical of the dceu/Snyderverse crowd.

Everything about this is just a callback to the Past. And ppl who have that mindset? Usually aren't forward thinkers or progressive. So IMO? I don't see this doing good. Only thing keeping WB in conversations? Is Matt Reeves and his work. Nothing Else!!! So hope the small minority of fans who waving Pom-poms around for Gunn. Are rdy for the disappointment.
