Fun fact: pink elephants used to mean someone high or drunk, and you were seeing things, so you could tell you were seeing pink elephants and people would know what you meant. This is also the scene where they get drunk I think. So that’s why it may seem like a rather random scene and out of place for the movie. I always thought it was a weird scene, not really scary, I was just trying to figure out how everything worked together. Hope that helped explain it to anyone.

Fun fact: "Seeing pink elephants" was once used as a euphemism for that point in drunkenness where your vision gets all blurry and shapes become increasingly warped, that happens roughly just before the blackout phase. Though it never really entered the popular vernacular and was only really used by a handful of articles historically. It also fell out of use relatively quickly for whatever reason. The animators of Dumbo simply took the phrase more literally and exaggerated the extent of the hallucinations, especially considering the bottle that fell into the barrel was probably champagne judging by the bubbles, which has nowhere near enough alcohol content to cause such effects after being watered down to the extent it was.
